RE: Converter problem or something else?

Sorry, fixed already, good.

RE: Chocking question?

I use a Rotochok on the side up on Lynx Leveler blocks. Just normal wedge chocks for tires on ground. Worked great for years, I highly recommend them. NOTE DO NOT ONLY CHOCK ONE SIDE. If a good wind comes up, the TT can EASILY pivot. From that point on you are in BIG trouble. Just depends what it hits first.

RE: Towing Speed - Am I Going Too Slow?!

One other point. We have driven for miles where it looked like we were holding up traffic .... until .... we noticed that there were passing zones everywhere. It seems some folks LIKE to follow a big white wall. So IMHO if there are passing zones, and nobody is passing you, they are either too dumb to actually be driving, or they LIKE the speed you are going. In either of those cases, pulling over is not necessay. I rarely tow over 55 mph unless I'm caught in a rush hour and am holding everyone up. Then I pop up to 65 mpg for awhile.

RE: Equal-izer change.

I went and read the old thread. I wish we had an answer from a RECEIVER manufacturer. I do know I contacted the receiver manufacturer on our 1999 Mercedes ML320. They clearly said THEIR receiver was rated for a 10" distance from ball to hitch pin. They said I needed to derate the receiver capacity if I used a longer drawbar. They said they thought that was pretty standard in the industry. Sorry I do not still have the email, it was 14 years ago after all. I know some think if I use a really long length drawbar I could tow a 10,000# trailer with a Pinto, but I'm not going to try it. To each his own. One final point. It was said no receiver failures were reported here. Didn't I read a lot about GM receivers bending a year ago or so?

RE: Black Forest Fire in CO

I just wish they would PUNISH the folks who start them. The guy who burned down a lot of Los Alomos just got promoted from what I was told. If there are no consequences, why should people care?

RE: How do you replace all the tires on a 5th wheel?

I use Lynx leveler blocks to build ramps under both tires on one axle. Loosen lug nuts on other axles tires, pull up on ramps, remove two tires (one on each side). Take tires to shop for replacement. Upon return, grease wheel bearings, check brake parts, and then put new tires on TT. I then repeat for second set the following day. Note this requires TWO vehicles, as I leave TV and TT attached to do this. I do the axle with the best old tire last, as that becomes my new spare.

RE: Unsafe at any speed....

I promise I will NOT note your tire failures were all made in China.

RE: Annual Leaking Toilet Seal

Haven't replaced a toilet seal yet in over 100,000 miles (3 TT's to be honest about it). I discovered if I store the toilet with half a cup of olive oil on top of seal, it stays great. I actually carry a small bottle with us and if pedal gets even a touch stiff I add a little overnite, which fixes it. Use it maybe twice a year. Try it, what do you have to lose?

RE: Equal-izer change.

Changes? It depends on your tongue weight. Most drawbars are spec'd for 10" between hitch pin and center of ball. Suppose VEHICLE (not receiver, VEHICLE) is spec'd for 1000# tongue weight. Using a 12" drawbar actually decreases the max tongue weight spec slightly, to 833#, although folks usually ignore that. HOWEVER, using an 18" drawbar decreases the max allowable tongue weight to 555#. As long as that is within your TT specs, fine, but that means a max of around 4273#. How heavy is your TT? Problem has to do with torque on the hitch to vehicle attachment. Personally I'd remove the tailgate and throw the extension away, but that is just me.

RE: Confused at Camping World

Sounds to me like an honest salesman, as long as the TT's he showed you had that GVWR, not UVW.

RE: Black Forest Fire in CO

Any news on who started it? Last I read they said somebody lit it, but unsure if it was deliberate or an accident. House we lived in many many years ago is now gone. I put lots of work into that house. Hope the folks who bought it are ok.

RE: Underbelly question

One thing. Get a beer and sit and look at the garage. In ours I was able to creatively use Ancra straps, and a few carabeaners, to tie down both our toys front and rear using factory floor rings. Once I figured it out, it was simple. Maybe you will get lucky also.

RE: 2003 Yukon XL Towing Capacity

Ask Chevy. I THINK your tongue weight spec is 840# ON THE VEHICLE. You want 13% or more of the LOADED TT weight on the tongue. Thus the max LOADED weight is 6461#. Most folks add about 1000# of stuff over the UVW. If you do, you need a UVW (dry weight) of 5461#. As I said, ask Chevy. They have a book that lists VEHICLE, not receiver, tongue weight specs. Receiver, hopefully, is always rated higher than the vehicle itself.

RE: Are tire chains recommended?

Used to carry chains years ago. Never used them. In over 200,000 miles I've never cared. If it is bad enough to need chains we just stay put a day or two until they aren't needed. That is the nice thing about RV's, you do not NEED to go out and play on the roads full of drivers who drive like they have never seen snow or ice. Accident rate while camped in RV is VERY low. Accident rate on icy roads is very high. Since I can hear some folks thinking, yes we often are out until mid November.

RE: 10000 harbor freight hitch up to par???

If you used a Reese Dual Cam, Equalizer, or other non-Chinese WDH you SHOULD be able to make it squat as little as you want pretty near. I adjust my 10k Equalizer so my Ford squats equally front and rear when hooked up. Did that with our last TV also. Note recommenmded tongue weight is 13% to 15% of the FULLY LOADED TT weight. Have you weighed everything fully loaded? Is your tongue weight within that range? If it is too heavy in front, where is your fresh water tank? On our two toyhaulers we adjusted the tongue weight to compensate for toys by the amount of fresh water we carried. Just an idea.

RE: Surge Protectors

Never had one yet. No troubles in well over 100,000 miles and many years.

RE: E2 or E4 fastway hitch for my new camper?

I'd get the 4 way if it was mine. Check RV Wholesalers to be sure dealer is giving you a good price.

RE: Clearing slide-out roof before leaving camp

I use a mirror on a pole (awning lock pole actually) to see if it NEEDS cleaning. If it does I use a folding stepladder to get high enough, then a brush with extendable handle made to wash sides of TT while standing on ground. Works great. Oh, it works to wash the TT when home also.

RE: Top tier gasoline.

You all can argue all you wish. When towing we get about 2 mpg better mileage with Shell. Got over 200,000 miles on our SUV, half that towing at its tow limit, and we always kept track of gas mileage. Shell works for me, and no I do not work for them. No major engine work done. It does burn about half a quart of oil every 10,000 miles now. I'm happy.
