RE: Battery guy said series... I think parallel

I knew this was the place to come. Thanks very much for the help and suggestions. I will re-wire it and try it out this evening to see if it works.

RE: Battery guy said series... I think parallel

Thanks, Wolfe. That is good information for me. SMKettner, to the point and easy to understand as usual. I appreciate it.

RE: Battery guy said series... I think parallel

Hi 20oldman. Nope not the same guy, but still. This one runs a battery shop :R . I have only 60 watts of solar. This is just an experiment to see if it will work for giving the greenhouse some heat in winter. I guess I can hook up the batteries tonight (they are on the regular battery charger now) and see if the inverter will work. You say that the inverter is not ruined? That is a relief. When experimenting yesteday, it did not alarm or anything so maybe it is ok. This is the inverter: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200343111_200343111

RE: Battery guy said series... I think parallel

Sorry if I was unclear. I am using 2 12v batteries for my greenhouse. Oh Dear, did I ruin my inverter by doing this? I just knew that guy wasn't right, but he sells batteries for a living and I brought the inverter to the shop with me for the cables. I used it in the middle of the night on a timer for 2 hours... the alarm was on it this morning and I turned it off. The manual says it has a thermal overload protection and low battery protection.

Battery guy said series... I think parallel

Hi, I am coming here because I am unsure of the competence of the battery guy in town. Maybe it is good advice, maybe not, but I know I will get the right advice here. :) This set up is NOT in my trailer. I have solar panels charging two 12v batteries that I took off of my trailer. I have a 1500 watt modified sinewave inverter. I want to use a 400/800 watt heater and two flourescent lights in a greenhouse with this set up. I went to the battery guy to get the cables made from battery to inverter. That was fine. He said to put them in series. I thought parallel to give me more hours. He said no, series. I can run the lights (80 watts each) OR the heater on 400 watts. It will not do both. What are your thoughts? The inverter should run both, I would think but maybe not. I'm asking this here because I am more comfortable than at the solar forum. Moderator, if this isn't ok to ask here... feel free to delete. *edited for clarity. Thanks,

RE: California to Minnesota

Interesting way to go.. where is this trailer life navigator of which you speak? Thanks, Ellie

RE: California to Minnesota

Yes, that's the rig. I can allow up to 3 weeks. Unless, of course y'all tell me that is not enough time. Then I'll have to wait until I retire, then I can take all the time I want, lol. Ellie

California to Minnesota

I am planning a trip from Redding, Ca. to Floodwood, Minnesota near Duluth. The trip would be in the summer and I would like the route with the least grades if possible. In other words, easiest towing roads. I would also like to ask how long you think it will take, say if I drive for 5-6 hours a day. If I know that, I can factor in stops for sightseeing. This trip won't be until possibly next summer, so I have plenty of time to prepare. Thought I would come here first. Google maps suggests I-80 then I-94 but I'll bet they don't pull a trailer!! :) Thanks, Ellie

RE: Route from Redding to Yellowstone

Thanks, after all the planning, I decided to go next year due to family stuff. I hope the route chosen will work well. I am a big baby and prefer easy roads. Ellie

RE: Teach me about tires

Thanks very much. It is good to know that I will be safe. My door sticker looks just the same except the date is 4/06. I will weigh it next week. I am anxious to do so now. Ellie

RE: Teach me about tires

Well, with all the good info here, and I had called Les Schwab (two and two different answers, lol) I decided to compromise. Now, I am leaving tomorrow morning so if someone could oblige and let me know if this is ok. My reasoning was that it seemed people said between 60-65 in the front and 70-75 for the rear. 62.5 in front 72.5 in back Gee, this is like when I add a "little of this and a pinch of that" to a recipe and my kids are wanting exact measurements... lol Ellie

RE: Flat TV mounting

Oh, so true. It was ever so convenient to stick it in the little hole made for it! I now have been thinking of getting a mount now that the absurd price for one has come down!

RE: Flat TV mounting

I'd love to see a picture. I have a 2006 Jayco and have been thinking about moving the TV. My neck hurts after using it ... glad to see it is just not me and getting old with aches and pains, lol. Ellie

RE: Teach me about tires

Wow! Did I ever come to the right place. This is what I wanted, to actually learn about tires and pressure so that I can understand and do the right thing. I edited the posts up front to say the door says 50 on front and 80 in back. Should have had a cup of coffee before running out there to check so I could post before work. ;) However, that does not change the wonderful and informed answers I am getting. I have always wanted to weigh my truck and trailer and now this shows me more than ever that I should. I can weigh the truck, trailer, and then both. I will have them loaded as I would for camping. I need to read a little more, but now, since the door says one thing and the tires another, I should then go with the tires, right? This brings me to another question: Do you typically air the front tires different from the back? How do you know what the differnce is.. that is, how much less air in the front than back? Ellie

RE: Teach me about tires

Oh, now I am getting it. I don't HAVE to have them at 80 unless it is loaded for camping and even then, it may not be to the max weight. By putting the trailer on the hitch, does this make it like a max load where I should put it up to 80? I feel I am learning now and won't have to rely on others. I want to do it myself. Justlabs, I just read your post... how much is the minimum air? Ellie
EllieThomas 05/27/09 09:09am Tow Vehicles
RE: Teach me about tires

Now here is a dumb one. If they expand with heat, would you put 75... or is the 80 already allowing for that?
EllieThomas 05/27/09 08:52am Tow Vehicles
RE: Teach me about tires

The door says max 80 for the back and 50 for the front. The tires say 80 max. The dealer put these tires on it just before they put it for sale. I am the second owner.

Teach me about tires

I am getting ready to go and the tires look low to me. Of course, now the truck is loaded! The tires and door say that the max is 80 yet there is 45.5 in them. I know to check when they are cool. I know they need more, but this is what the dealer put in them, so Why did they put under 50 and how far to the max should I go? Do I put more in when towing and less when not? Would it matter that I typically drive on mountain roads in triple digit weather? I want to learn what I should do and why so I can understand it better. *Edited to add: I can't read very well... door says 50 in front and 80 in back. Tires say 80. Thank you, Ellie

RE: Replace couch with chairs?

This has been so helpful. I will do some measuring and maybe some shopping! Love the ideas and pics. Ellie

RE: Safe T Alarm going off

Gosh, I do learn something every day. I just figured if the trailer was plugged in, then electricity would take over. Well, now I know, and I am glad the alarm works. The Prosine charger got her up to 13.4 from last night til this morning. Pretty good. Ellie
