RE: GOT MY (LT) MAN CARD.....I did IT!!!!!

This is what it takes to get a "man card" in the U.S.A.? We're doomed...

RE: Claiming a first come campsite

A couple of chairs placed around the fire ring, is a good way, Or putting up a dining fly, or eazyup. Maybe a grill sitting there. You got to mark it somehow, and chairs, grills, and canopies are the easiest way. This is the way it's done- usually and legitimately while folks go off to pay or get groceries or something. All bets are off, though, if it's a no-fee CG and somebody notices that there's nobody actually OCCUPYING the site the first night or so. Those that drive up to the CG a few days ahead and attempt to "reserve" a site by leaving things there and heading home are likely to come back to not only a full site, but having lost whatever stuff they left there!

RE: Fiberglass dented

Not seeing a picture... Taking a shot in the dark, however: I don't think such a panel can be "pulled out", like one might do with aluminum or even (possibly) straight fiberglass like that on boats/molded trailers. It's typically a sort of sandwich of plywood with a skin of fiberglass over the top, and as such it doesn't have what you might call "memory". You'll probably have to push it from the inside- and even then, if the wood is torn or wet it might not go back to the original shape.

RE: LT tire options _ Another Poly Carcass Tire to Consider

Never heard of baseball-shaped tires on any trailer-of any size- but if that's what you think you need...go for it! To get back to the point of my post: I'm talking tread depth design there, as it relates to rolling resistance. Shallower is better for a towed unit. With a small 4 cylinder tow vehicle I can see why you might see a difference in rolling resistance. But winds in Eastern Washington surely effect your towing more than anything else. However I am not sure how anyone with a diesel pickup and large 5th wheel could tell the difference between a new Marathon ST with 10/32 or G614 with 12/32 verses a new R500 HD commercial grade tire with 14/32 regarding rolling resistance. The fact that this tire is built as a commercial grade tire would lead me to believe that it is a bit stiff and therefore most likely has a low rolling resistance like the XPS Rib Michelin and R250 Bridgestone which both have steel ply carcass and very low rolling resistance. It is just hard to understand your level on knowledge on the subject. Are you or the big fellow of yours a tire engineers? I have towed on both XPS Ribs and Duravis R250's. This last winter I got the best mileage ever going to Arizona and back at 12.4 mpg average for the 1650 miles each way. Maybe the Cummins is now broken in with 100K+ on the clock. Combine weight is around 20,500 pounds and trailer is tall. Wind, speed and height of a 5th wheel effects mileage more than anything else. There a link to a picture of my 5th wheel and pickup in the original post in this thread. Chris Nice fiver and pickup "truck"...maybe some day you can get a real one! I see you don't understand the concept of rolling resistance and how tire design, width, and tread depth/pattern affects it. I s'pose it's not really necessary for casual towers to have a deep grasp of the subject, but in case you'd like to educate yourself, here's a sort of introductory on the subject: NHTSA STUDY: Rolling resistance and fuel economy If you have any questions, feel free to ask...

RE: LT tire options _ Another Poly Carcass Tire to Consider

Those look real good for drive/steer axles- I'd buy them for our truck. BUT The tread's too deep for use on a trailer, in my opinion. Bad for rolling resistance! Wider width is another problem in that department... And you think a baseball shaped ST has a low rolling resistance???? What do you have on your 5th wheel and how big is it? Or is this your trailer? Chris That's my little trailer- what's your point???? My husband's is bigger than yours, I assure you...;) Never heard of baseball-shaped tires on any trailer-of any size- but if that's what you think you need...go for it! To get back to the point of my post: I'm talking tread depth design there, as it relates to rolling resistance. Shallower is better for a towed unit.

RE: Problems for Alaskan resident buying an RV in California?

I checked with the Alaska DMV and they do not have a place in the Lower 48 to buy license plates. Bill :h Why would ANY State have a place outside its own boundaries where one could buy its licence plates?

RE: Lance 1995 Child Restraint System for Upper Bunk

I'd bet that it doesn't differ much from the net-type restraint Lance is still using in other models- you can see it at about minute 3:40 in this Youtube video. It's available as an option on new units, and from the description it sounds like the fabric/mesh wall is sewn to the pad covers at the bottom- probably a cross bar at the top? (Options page/descriptor) You probably could order it from Lance, but at $258.00 I'd think you could come up with something that would work just as well!

RE: Pros and Cons of 1099 versus withholding

Not sure what you mean by the most obvious- is the fact that if the company does withholding it has to pay half the SStax due, but if one does the self-employment 1099, the earner has to pay it all one of them?

RE: Did I buy a lemon? roadtrek ranger 2013

It's possible that Roadtrek will just tell you to take it to a local RV place to be looked at under warranty, although four hours is not considered too far to travel for most folks who've bought a new unit and want to be sure it's being properly serviced. I recommend that if it's too hot for the dogs to travel, get someone to dogsit and take the unit back to the dealer, where they'll very likely solve ALL the problems you describe.

RE: Problems for Alaskan resident buying an RV in California?

While there is not a state sales tax in Alaska, some towns and boroughs do have one. This is true, but in most cases, the local "sales" tax doesn't apply to vehicles. link

RE: Travel Trailer

Many of the wheeled add-on units are limited by their manufacturers to motorhome or fifth wheel trailers only- can't think of any that are sold for adding to bumper-pull trailers.

RE: Installing vinyl insert in C channel trim

Warming the trim with a hairdryer will allow it to "stretch" around curves. You want to gently elongate the outside edge, thus avoiding humping on the inside edge. For true, square right angles, I recommend just "picture-frame" cutting.

RE: Problems for Alaskan resident buying an RV in California?

Probably. More than likely it will get worse when he has to pay sales tax on the sale too. There's no sales tax in Alaska, so if the fellow buys it in California and immediately removes it for licencing in Alaska he won't have to pay California Sales tax. Per his traveling home with the Moho in your name: I wouldn't let anyone leave my driveway, much less the State/Country, without a binding transfer of ownership. Here in Washington that's accomplished by the seller signing off/sending in the form on the back of the Title... Alaska has a sixty-day permit available that I think might solve the transport-home problem...The fellow that's interested in the Rv might inquire about this at his local office, assuming he's still in Alaska. RE: HELP! What does this NEWB need?!

Don't buy the RV toilet paper, just buy a septic tank safe brand you'll save money. Also when taking about toilet paper, you need to discuss with wife and kids about how much toilet paper they use. less is better for the black tank, and use just enough water to empty the bowel. use just enough water to empty the bowel. should also use enough water to empty the bowl. bumpy :B Had to look twice...You're a card, Bumpy!

RE: %#$&# salesman

Don't get me wrong, the buyer was a fool for not knowing what their TV is rated for, but the problem I'm having is the salesman LOOKED at the TV and told these people they are fine :h And we know that....how???? Not that it matters...unless we're of the belief that salesmen exist to protect us from our own stupidity.

RE: HELP! What does this NEWB need?!

1.Go to Walmart or the local hardware store and get a water hose, a sewer hose, and a pressure regulator for the water. 2.Put some grub in the trailer, some plates/silverware, and a pot/pan or two. 3. Put cash in your wallet. 4. Pack your scanties and your panties and go camping, but not too far from civilization.. Everything else you need will become apparent over the course of the next few days, and you'll spend much of the trip acquiring it. Just don't forget tip number 3....;)

RE: %#$&# salesman

Apparently, what this country needs to do is ban "salespeople" since their job is to sell and replace them with gatekeepers. That way when you go into an RV dealership they can tell you what you can and cannot buy based on your driving experience, your tow vehicle, the color of your hair (can't have the paint job of a rig clashing with your personal style) etc. And don't forget the driving test, the eye test, maybe a physical and of course, a detailed test of your mechanical aptitude because the dealership should never sell a rig to someone who might have a problem driving it, setting it up or repairing it should it have a problem. And it should be expanded to every retail setting. Go into a sporting goods store and walk up to the cash register with a top of the line set of golf clubs, the gatekeeper will be required to review your swing and decide if you are good enough for the clubs. Go grocery shopping, you will have to explain how you propose to prepare that steak. If they think you are going to overcook it, or put on too much salt, no sale. Personally, I am smart enough to earn the money, and I think I am smart enough to spend it as I choose. You are really going to extremes don't you think? Setting up a rig can be taught, repairing it can be taken to professionals, preparing a steak can also be taught. The salesman could have still made a sale, but of a different TT that the TV could pull. He could also say that he isn't in a position to answer the question. By answering their question he took on the responsibility of their decision. If I buy a huge steak and ask the butcher if I can cook it on my mini George Foreman grill that I have right here for him to look at and he assures me that I can then when that steak doesn't fit he needs to take some responsibility, People look at salesmen, right or wrong, as experts in their field. It is at the very least unethical for the salesman to tell somebody their current equipment, that the salesman is looking at, is adequate when he doesn't know if it is or isn't. Yes, the buyers should educate themselves and take responsibility but what do we need salesmen for if we can't ask questions and have a little faith that they will answer honestly. If I have to know everything about anything I buy then get rid of salesmen and just have cashiers to ring up the sale. WesternRVparkowner is right.- else where does it stop? When you go into a liquor store, must the clerk counsel you as to the hazards of drunk driving? When you eat at McDonald's, must the teenager behind the counter refuse to upsize your Big Mac Meal because you're obviously overweight? No one to blame here but the guy that bought the tug/trailer, and that's an end to it.

RE: basement doors slightly shifted, can not close or lock .

Sounds like you're stationary at the moment- is this something that just happened? I ask because you might just be slightly "tweaked", position-wise, throwing the frames a bit off-square. This seems especially likely if more than one door is affected. Just moving the rig may square things up.

RE: I'm under truck and need help with trailer wires

I see now- looks like standard RV wiring, lacking only the blue electric brake line. (Obviously-it's a camper, right?) Yellow is usually "extra" in that configuration- sometimes used for backup lights. Does this Bargman diagram/color key look like it could match what you've got? http://www.tompatterson.com/VAC/Archives/2001_05/gif00001.gif
