RE: Right size Hallmark truck camper

Hallmark will have a new 8.5 foot called the Everest out late this fall or by next spring. I think it will be a little lighter than the Ute but have many of the same features. I have the 2006 version of your truck and that's the model I would be researching if I was looking to buy a new camper.

RE: Right size Hallmark truck camper

Agreed on the K2; dry and heavily optioned, I saw one on electronic scales at 1800 pounds. Very, very impressive, and with a cassette toilet.

RE: 11 gmc hd diesel

Or you could look at it that the taxpayers' investment in GM has been repaid - and the part that was turned into stock is now going to be sold by the Fed at a profit, so the taxpayers make out better. So any GM sales benefit the taxpayer to an extent that isn't the case with Ford.
- Clay
I hear you on the no dogs; I'd own any truck that I thought was going to be good. But I do have to take exception to the thought that GM has repaid anything. GM received $52 billion from the U.S. government, but only $6.7 billion of this amount was considered a loan. The "loan" has been paid back, but through a sleight of hand - GM withdrew money from a TARP funded escrow account at the Treasury. That would be more taxpayer money. And governments still have $45.3 billion "invested" in GM. The risk is that investment will come with political interference.

I also like that Ford did not need us to bail them out at the FED level like GM and Dodge did.
That ultimately may be one of the best business decisions ever made in the automobile industry.

RE: Pop-up TC?

Wind is absolutely not a concern in a pop-up. Our camper has been used the most in the Columbia River Gorge where the wind blows all the time. The soft walls are heavy material and are stretched tightly when the roof is raised. There is very little if any movement even in heavy winds. You may have to leave a window cracked to equalize the pressure in stormy changing weather.
One distinct advantage of a pop-up in hot climates is that by raising and lowering the roof in the evening after a hot day will displace hot air and bring in cool. It's an outstanding feature I did not consider before owning one.

RE: good article on cassette toilets

If only I could find an empty beer box that would fit the cassette. It would make it a little more casual entering the gas station restrooms ;)
I've found a solution!!!

RE: 11 gmc hd diesel

HEARD FROM THE DEALER. THEY WILL BUILD THE TRUCK THE 28TH OF AUGUST SO GM SAYS.WHEN IT GETS HERE MAYBE IN SEPT. MAY CANCEL. HAVE TO THINK ON IT. SIX MONTH WAIT
You are experiencing the effects of the near Armageddon manufacturing in North America went through during the economic crisis. Many goods, and especially those considered discretionary, like new vehicles, are hard to come by this year as some sense of normalcy slowly returns. The shelves are bare, and the whole supply chain has been disrupted.
If you cancel, and the economy slows down again, you may kick yourself when the cycle repeats itself and you can't find a truck this time next year.

For those who are interested and haven't seen it, Truck Camper Magazine has a good article on cassette toilets in truck campers. What an excellent idea.

RE: Do the pop up tc's have leak issues ?

I have had a leak problem with my Outfitter that is associated with leaving the top down and parking with the front of the camper lower than the back. Outfitter was able to stop it for one season but it returned this year. I can't believe I can't figure it out - the water gets on the outside of the softwall when the top is down and then leaks in through the window stitching. It's more annoying than anything else and I am sure one day it will dawn on me how to stop it.
I don't have experience with Hallmarks, but I have seen the new one piece roof they come with, and there is very little maintenance to do on them. I can't see them leaking unless there was an obvious structural flaw or failure involved.

RE: 11 gmc hd diesel

In the ford company web dealer info, which announced with the additional HP and toque, the pay load was increased by 500 pounds. On the sticker which lists the weights my 2011 (350 DW)has a GVW of 13,000 pounds. That is before Ford announcement of the additional weight for trucks made after August during the production year. My rear axel is listed at 9,000 plus. Truck and full fuel and me is 8,240, so new specs will be 5,000 plus load weight.
Our Silverado is the first non Ford product I've ever owned. Something about that big blue Ford logo I can't quite get out of my head. Problem though - in 2006 I knew a couple of Powerstroke owners who had trucks that were horrible. It could be a hundred degrees and they had to idle them for 20 minutes to "warm them up".
Not saying that hasn't been fixed, but it's not a pretty memory.

RE: 11 gmc hd diesel

I just recieved word from Ford that they are going to offer to reprogram the 2011 350 Super duty trucks with and additional 15 hp and 65 foot pounds of torque as of August 31. Presently my 2011 has 415-425 hp (Ford dyno test)and has the most power of any diesel truck I have ever owned.
Maybe it is time to check out Ford's new engine and transmission. I sure love mine.
Do you have any payload specs for 2011?

RE: Keep the 2500 or get a 3500 dually?

I am fine on axle ratings, but if you are concerned with GVWR....
As is my understanding on the SRW 2500 vrs the SRW 3500, there is only the addition of 1 leaf in the rear pack. The axles, brakes and everything else are the same. That seems like a cheap and simple upgrade if my factory leafs with the RAS are not enough.
And I think, but I am not sure, that the brake calipers were a little bit bigger on the 2006 SRW 3500. The bigger truck only gave an additional 700 pounds of GVWR. The 2011 is a whopping 1900 pounds more.

RE: Keep the 2500 or get a 3500 dually?

My bet is your camper weight should be 2000 or less, and that's pretty hard to find.
Agreed, and wholeheartedly. I have the same truck as you stump breaker, and I have an Outfitter Apex 8. The camper, dry and only including options, and an empty truck with a full tank of diesel comes in far north of the 9200 lb GVWR. I am fine on axle ratings, but if you are concerned with GVWR, as I am, only one of the smaller campers sold by Outfitter, Hallmark, Four Wheel, Northstar, or Palomino will "fit the bill".
I recently had the chance to see a Hallmark K2 with solar, electric jacks, and many other options. It's a very nice unit, and dry, it weighed almost exactly 1800 pounds on a set of digital scales. Still that doesn't leave a lot of room for water, food, clothing, husband and wife, etc.
If I could do it again, I would get a bigger truck, maybe one of the 2011 GM diesel 3500 SRW with a GVWR of 11000 lbs. That's an additional 1900 lbs of payload over our trucks.

Norcold® Inc. Refrigerators N410/N412

I am looking for ideas for a bigger fridge than the standard "3.7 cubic foot" special that comes in many smaller campers. I came across this 4.5 cubic foot 3 way in my search. Does anyone have experience with this unit, or something similar?
I have a Tundra 42J in my camper, and it's been a good fridge, but the freezer door is a joke - just a plastic sheet that the hinges broke off of in the first week.
Thanks in advance.

RE: 11 gmc hd diesel

I do believe GM paid the government money back months ago.
In total, GM received $52 billion from the U.S. government, but only $6.7 billion of this amount was considered a loan. The "loan" has been paid back, but governments still have $45.3 billion "invested".
But surveyorjp has posted some excellent and encouraging information. I sincerely hope GM thrives. Their Silverado product is a big part of my truck camper experience.

RE: 11 gmc hd diesel

One has to wonder if political interference will ruin the GM brand. It's not inconceivable that some real stinkers could be built under the supervision of, for example, the EPA. Hopefully not, but fortunately Ford stayed away from gubmint money and should be able to answer the call of the free market.

RE: Another Lance Dealer allegedly gone.

What is interesting to me is that I see far more truck campers this year on the road than ever before and far less diesel pushers.
Agreed. Just drove a 3100 mile triangle between Calgary, Alberta, Portland, OR, Denver, CO, and back to Calgary, and truck campers were prominent. AND, new high end motorhomes. Many, many, many Winnebago Views.

RE: Alaskan nearing completion

There's also a picture here of an Alaskan flatbed built up on a Sprinter chassis.
Pretty cool idea dzzz. Like others, I'd be really interested to know specs etc. That fridge looks massive!!!
I had posted last fall about two Alaskan campers I saw in Yoho National Park. One was new and one was older. The older one was in mint condition - so impressive to see something aging so well. The owners were hauling small kayaks on top and paddling high mountain lakes in September. It was one of those truck camper appreciation moments when you realize how much you love the truck camper concept.
