RE: A/C Issues?

Totally agree with billmac. To support this thought, I just had issues similar. I took the inside air conditioner face off, where the filter resides, and then opened up the box inside that area where the 110 wires meet the wires for the air conditioner. The wire nuts used were loose, emphasize loose. Also all the thermostat wires were there and loose. I went thru every wire and retighten or reconnected with but splices. The wire nuts on the 110v, I actually spliced those together, then heat shrinked as they were just below where condensation could drip if the pan overflowed. I just spent 1 week in 95 degree weather with 60-70 percent humidity in Northeast Texas and the rig never got above 76 degrees. Now my project is going thru every connection and making sure they are all tight and secure.

RE: Allure Flooring

I installed the Allure Ultra (snap together) from Home Depot, the main living area, kitchen and the bathroom. We love it. We are boondockers as we NASCAR a lot. It has withstood the Texas heat, the wear and tear of sand on the beach and rough roads. Just did a Oklahoma trip, where roads are rough, and it worked well. No issues. I installed it myself and took my time. You need to make sure every staple has been extracted, not just hammered in. I highly recommend it for our usage.

RE: Allure Flooring

I installed Allure that you snap together. So far I am very happy. I have not had the moving that others have indicated. I installed in March of this year. I have traveled around 1000 miles on interstates and some pretty rough roads. Also weather in extremes from 20 to 100 so far. Everything seems to be just fine and we LOVE the floor. So easy to maintain compared to carpet and everyone has oooowwwed and aaaaawwwed when they see it.

RE: What are most common greenhorn mistakes?

May not be Greenhorn, but do not throw your battery disconnect after you hook up and take off. Just last weekend, my neighbor, as I watched, threw his battery disconnect before he took off. I wondered over and asked him why he did that as I am always curiuos on new ideas. He said, well, he was concerned about a wire being cut by vibration and shorting out causing a fire. I then asked him what his "break away brake" was going to do with no juice. He looked at me and then went back and reconnected his battery. He thanked me and said he had not thought of that!

RE: Tries to stay away from

Maxxis has a pretty good rating with most. They have 15" tires in a load range E. It is an ST tire and it is a radial. I have had very good service from these tires. Just keep the pressures up to spec. I wanted to go with 16" so I could use the LT tires, but due to space constraints I had to stay with 15's....Not all ST tires are bad, again Maxxis and I am able to buy these at Discount Tire.

RE: boxed curtain valances

I just removed every one out of our 5er. Every one had Pan/Phillips head screws. Look up under the valance, use a flashlight if needed and you will see that there are 2 to 4 screws either screwed directly into the wall/cabinet or using "L" brackets with 2 to 4 screws. I tried to make it harder that what it actually was at first. Think simple and you will find the answer on these things.

RE: Slide out

In, but as most slide manuals say, every few weeks it needs be extended and retracted to exercise the seals. No different than leaving it extended for a period of time. You need to retract and extend every so often.

RE: Toliet paper

We use all natural.............corn cobs.......that's what I had when I was growing up on the farm......some of the roughest but most environmentally friendly TP you can buy! But seriously, in all of the RV's we have every had, we just made sure the TP was cellulose free and went from there, no pun intended.....

RE: 5th wheel keys for main door

If you are not in a position to make it to a locksmith or they do not have the blank as was my experience, I went to this link and used the number off of my FIC key and they sent me one. Its not as cheap but it was a quality key and it worked first time.

RE: Zep question?

I applied ZEP about 2 years ago. The decals in the direct Texas sun still curls. I have trimmed and reZEPPED. Still Mr. Sun takes its toll.

RE: Slide problems

Just a thought, is it a hydraulic slide? If so check the fluid. I had that on a 2003 Cardinal. Put in about a pint and worked fine.....

RE: Can height of 5th wheel be much of a problem?

I was told by the Texas Department of Transportation, that if there is repaving going on in the area, please be advised that there is usally 3-4 inches of new asphalt and that the signs for bridges normally do not compensate even after the repave. Bottom line the clearance signs may be incorrect.

RE: Fire Extinguishers

Just a sidebar to this, I witnessed an RV fire at Texas Motor Speedway in the unreserved camping area a couple of years ago. The RV (class A) was about 2 years old. A fire looked to have started in the fridge area. Not more than 100 feet away was where all the fireman that come to NASCAR was camping. Well over 100 of them were there and they converged on the fire. They even had issues getting it put out, they had everytype of firefighting equipment that you could think of. They finally dowsed the complete RV in foam. Rv's next to the fire were starting to smoke from the heat. They were at a point where a natural state of panic had started. We were about 20 spots down and witnessed the whole thing. Bottom line, hats off to fire fighters. They used their training and expertise to save life, limb and property. I really do not know what we all would have done if the firefighters had not been camping as close as they were.

RE: how much snow on fiver roof is okay?

Also remember, the snow is a great insulator. So you will be like an Eskimo, warm and snugg. I never remove the snow. I have had wet heavy snow on the roof for most of a winter. Never had a problem, I tend to believe a heavy rain is more detrimental than snow.

RE: Post your GOOD service stories.....

Crestview RV on the North Side of Georgetown, TX, right on I35. I had 2 blowouts and took my 5er there to have it repaired. They went above and beyond, yes, it took a while but I firmly believe it was done right. Friendly, easy to work and explained everystep and RV parks very close if needed. They actually have this location and then another on the south side of Austin in Buda, close to Cabellas. I am all thumbs up for these folks! Oh and they are a Preferred Good Sam Insurance center.

RE: weight on roof

We do NASCAR races and on top of our 5er we limit it to 3. One in the front, one in the middle and one in the rear. We have plyboard that is 4 ft square and put under our chairs and it helps spread the weight. Never, Never all of you stand anywhere close in one spot. It will be all over, especially the beer. And thats another story. Just go have fun but keep your senses, an RV roof is not the most well built floor out there!

I did my 5er a year ago. It has been in the Texas sun since and it has not yellowed one bit. It still shines. I am a believer!

RE: Alignment or new axle? Update 10/20/12 pics

Well, I have my 5er in the shop right now. I had 2 blow outs in 250 miles and tore out the wheelwells and sheet metal on back to the bumper. Called the Insurance company and they told me to take it to whoever I preferred since there was not a preferred shop within 50 miles. So I took it to CrestviewRV in Georgetown TX who is preferred by my insurance company. After a couple of days the insurance company have approved of new axles, and everything else but tires. I called the adjuster and she said that it was their experience that since the axles are out of alignment via camber it is best to replace with new axles and save on more claims in the near future. Her experience claimed that having them aligned just did not cut it and the axles would loose it camber again in just a few short trips. So by going with what my insurance company is doing, I would suggest new axles.
