RE: Missoula - Portland US12 vs I90

If you want to see a great part of Idaho, take US 12. Yes it has many curves and the going is slower, but you only have one pass to drive (Lolo Pass). The Lochsa and Clearwater Rivers are great to see and enjoy. Lots of historic places to stop at along that route in Idaho. After Lewiston, you will be driving along the Snake River and eventually meet up with the Columbia, not much to look at but the highway is fine. When you get to Oregon the interstate along the Columbia is a piece of cake, lots of places to stop and make sure you see the waterfalls in the gorge area. Don't be in a hurry, you're in one of the most scenic areas of the northwest when you go from Missoula to Portland along this route.

RE: Memorial Day weekend, where will you be?

Will be at home, going to the local Memorial Day Parade on Saturday and maybe do some clamming too. Got to mow the yard also. Have found over the years that staying home on our nice 5 acres is more relaxing than fighting the crowds on holiday weekends, besides gas just went up another 10 cents in the last two days.

RE: stealth in a excel/wide body?

Have not had any problems with parking our 2001 PW Excel TD, the few inches extra width haven't posed any difficulty and the length is good. A backup camera is probably a good idea, especially if you're driving solo where nobody can check behind you as you maneuver in the parking lots. Our Excel is 8ft 8in tall but that's usually too high for some fast food places.

RE: What tires do you suggest?

I have Toyo tires on our PW, but Michelin tires are fine too, just get the tires with the stiff sidewalls for better handling.

RE: RV'ing old west trails

Two of our favorites, although not really "old west" are 1) the Lewis & Clark Trail from Missouri north and west to the Pacific and return in 1804-06, and 2) the Missions Trail in California from San Diego north to San Rafael dating bck to the early 1800's. Lots of infor is available on both of these trails and we have enjoyed the trips very much.

RE: Battery for a 2002 Pleasure Way

Don't replace your two btteries just yet, get them charged up by plugging the PW in to shore power and then closely monitor their condition after they get charged. Use a voltmeter to check the voltage. We have a 2001 PW Excel and never use the 12 volt setting unless we're driving or stopped enroute for a short time ( and then only if it's pretty hot outside and we're worried about the fridge contents.

RE: CA 199 from Crescent City, CA to Grants Pass, OR

Ron - I see you're from Anacortes, you will have no problem with CA 199. Just take it easy and enjoy the redwoods along the way the first few miles east of Crescent City. Easier to drive than many stretches of WA 20 in the North Cascades or on Whidbey Island.

RE: Rt 12 West of Lolo Mt

You will enjoy the drive, as others have noted just take it easy and watch the curves and narrowness of the roadway. Stop at the visitor center on Lolo Pass and get info about places to see and enjoy on the way. Wilderness Gateway CG is a good place to stop, even if just for lunch. The Lochsa and Clearwater Rivers are really something to admire, water is clear, but generally to cold for swimming until about August. Make sure you stop and enjoy the DeVoto Cedar Grove and Historic Lochsa Ranger Station on your travels.

RE: Flaming Gorge to Grand Teton - Hwy 191

Fairly long steep grade going south into Vernal, don't know about the road conditions from Duschene going toward Price and other towns. Other posters will no doubt have good info for you to plan by. Make sure you stop at the Flaming Gorge Overlook for some fantastic views!

RE: Fortuna CA in Nov-Dec time frame .. roads & RV park?

X2, CA 20 is the better choice that itme of year because there may be snow up on Berry Summit or Elkhorn Pass on CA 299

RE: towing trailer on hwy 1 in Ca to hwy 101 in Oregon

I agree with the responses that suggest you not take the trailer on CA 1, it's just too narrow and lots of tight turns. Park your trailer and use the tow vehicle or whatever to enjoy that highway. You will have no trouble on US 101 in CA or OR, suggest you drive it on weekdays though as the traffic gets heavy on weekends, except in the populated areas like the Bay Area where weekday traffic can be bad during commuting hours.

RE: Place to stay this night in Billings MT.

There's a park next to the Yellowstone River in Columbus that is minimal cost. It's a community RV park if I remember correctly, no hookups but much nicer than boondocking in a parking lot.

RE: been doing a little research -

Some Pleasure-Way models have twin beds in the rear which can be made up as a king size also, our 2001 PW Excel TD is equipped that way. You could probably take the spare off the rear door and mount your gas can, since the gas full can is probably lighter than the spare tire, or just get one of those racks that hook on to the receiver hitch and carry your stuff on it. But be careful in not adding too much weight back there as it will lighten the front end and affect the steering, at least on the shorter wheelbase Dodge chassis models of that vintage.

RE: Backcountry Boondocking Pics-Class B?

Renegade - Don't have any pictures, but two roads that I'd higly recommend are the North Fork Clearwater River Road near Pierce, and the St. Joe River Road upstream from Saint Maries. Both offer some good boondocking sites and don't have much traffic. You can drive the St. Joe River Road all the way to Superior MT if you so desire. Check with the Idaho Panhandle and Clearwater-Nezperce NF's for more info.

RE: Idaho Suggestions

If you're going to be in the Sandpoint/Coeur d'Alene area, another park to consider is Farragut SP about halfway between the two cities just east of US 95.

RE: Things to see and do in North, and South Dakota

Definitely add ND to your trip list, Teddy Roosevelt NP is quite impressive, we liked it much better than Badlands NP in SD. Another neat place that hasn't been mentioned in the ND area is Fort Union on the MT/ND border where the Yellowstone Rive meets the Missouri, it's an old historic trading post. Also you need to visit Fort Mandan to view the place where the Lewis & Clark expedition spent the winter of 1804/05. Have a good trip.

RE: Have to move our TT...our road is getting improved

Is the lack of ingress/egress for your RV a temporary matter while the county road is under construction, or will it be a permanent situation? Was your concern brought to the attention of the county officials who negotiatied for the 1/3 acre right-of-way purchase? If so, you need to contact them. If this matter was overlooked, you still may be able to reach some kind of temporary settlement with the county to solve your problem. I don't think that you would be wise to park the RV temporarily at the contractor's staging area, lots of dirt, dust, and activity going on there.

RE: visiting California

We returned recently from a three week trip to CA, loved it all. LA was bad for traffic as was downtown San Francisco, but the reswt of the state was fine. Roads were generally fine except for a short stretch of US 101 northbound near San Rafael, and a stretch of CA 99 northbound in the Sacramento area. Have always liked the area around Paso Robles, Santa Rosa, Eureka, Redding, Clear Lake, and we enjoyed the Santa Barbara, Oceanside, and Palm Desert country on this past trip. Joshua Tree and Redwood NP's are among our all-time favorites. Used to live in CA, we don't intend to move back but sure enjoy the state for all it has to offer. As others have noted, the people are great and the roads are generally pretty good as far as we are concerned. The missions are definitely worth visiting, especially the ones in San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Miguel, and Solvang.

RE: Historic Columbia River Highway

All58Parks - You made a wise decision, the historic highway is nice to drive but not towing a trailer. You will like Memaloose, we were there last spring; train traffic might be a little noisy at times, but you will get used to it.
