RE: Skype question
If you click on "call phones" line it brings up a touch pad you can click with your mouse. I have managed to use the touch pad to navigate thru voice mail jail lots of times.

RE: running furnace while traveling
We had a furnace soot up when we used it while in the road and it cost us $400 to get it fixed and an extra 2 days to do it. Be careful.

No problem having a US $ account, but I have been unable to find a place that will allow debit card access to the account. I hate having to pay a 2 1/2% premium to get my money changed from Cdn. to US $ so we usually haul cash (or travelers checks) with us and use the credit cards sparingly. There are lots of places that now will refuse travelers checks as they are being stolen and forged a lot by the bad guys.

RE: Claustrophobia in inside cabins on a cruise to Alaska
We are doing a 14 day Chilean Fjords cruise this winter and I wouldn't dream of anything but a balcony. Spend most of the time on the decks watching the scenery, but when you are on the inland seaway with 11,000 foot mountains dropping into the sea a mile from you I want to not miss a minute even when in the cabin.

RE: California Highway 1
If you are not nervous about tight roads, Hwy. 1 is rated in the top 10 most scenic roads in the world. We have done the trip both north and south with an auto (many times) a 23' class C 2 times and a 34' 5'r several times and had no trouble at all. Just be careful on the tight corners and get out of the way for folks who want to go fast.

RE: Dangerous stretch of N. Highway 1 in northern California
We have travelled Hwy. 1 from L.A. to Fort Bragg many times and have noted that there are several parts of Hwy. 1 north of SF posted with recommendations limiting the "king pin to rear axle" length to lengths from 20' to 28'. We have seen full size semis on these routes with no trouble and we have taken our rig through many times from L.A. to Fort Bragg and over the hump to Legget with no trouble. Only part I will NOT do is from Sausalito to Stinson Beach. WAAAAY to tight for anything over about 20'

Wow... San Diego, Santa Barbara, Carpenteria right on the beach, all are wonderful for wintering and mostly warm enough for us Canucks. Really cold in San Diego is overnight lows of 40 something and daytime is in the 60s plus at the coldest. We were in L.A. over Christmas a few years back and it made the news that the temps were only on the 60s for highs. Folks were wearing parkas and gloves while we were wearing shorts and t-shirts having just left 40 below.

Putting the baby to bed for the winter.... Sigh
Finally had to winterize today, expect several degrees of frost in the next few days and might even see some snow. Now all I have to do is wait for February so we can head south and get a head start on spring.

We have an "05" 28e33ts with 3 slides, center kitchen and a nice tall shower for me (over 6'2") and we have put on about 33,000 miles in 4 1/2 years withour any trouble with the unit. Only troubles were fridge and heater both conked out a year apart and were fixed under our extended warranty. Not a problem with the trailer. They tow well, are well thought out, and have lots of interior storage. Only negative is the basement storage is limited due to the design so you need to be able to travel light, or put some of the stuff in the back of the truck (we pack our bikes, firewood, and spare fuel in the truck). Longest trip was British Coloumbia to Palm Springs, then across to Florida for 2 months and then back and home up the California coast. Over 11,000 miles on the clock that trip with no troubles at all. Ours tows like a 28' and is 33'11" nose to tail.

When we were on the way east thru Montana on I90 we stopped at a WM in western Montana that had about 6 RV's overnighting there, the part that got me was the 15-20 autos that were there with people sleeping in them mixed among the RVs. I guess that there was a larger than usual slump in the local economy and there were a lot of folks who had been reduced to living in their cars. Most did not look as though they were travellers.
I have a hard time paying $30 or so to stop at an RV park just to sleep for 8 hours and cook a meal. We rarely use any of the services in the parks while on the road until we reach our destination and get settled.
While there we had a couple on bicycles pull up next to us, go into the store and then come out and pitch a tent right beside our RV. Turns out they had been on a 2 month 2000 mile bike trip and had spent almost 1/3 of their nights in Wallyworld while on the road. Had a nice chat with them and they said they really liked WM because of the security and had never been refused.

We travel with a premium RBC Visa card that will provide medical care, a Bank of Montreal Mastercard that does the same, an extended health plan from my proir employer (as a retirement perc) and a Credit Union insurance branch out of province policy. I'm pretty sure I can just let the insurers fight over who pays what if I ever get sick or hurt.

Dinosaur Trail has large full hookup sites but it is a bit pricey. It is a membership park and visitors usually get shuffled off to the "Arizona" section which is basically a gravel pit with hookups. If you insist on one of the treed sites in the main CG when you make reservations, they are quite large, easy access (34' 5r) and fairly quiet. Only bad part is it is about 10km out of town but only 4km from the tyrell museum. We spent 3 days there this summer with the grandkids.

We have owned our rig for 4 1/2 years and so far we have put on about 33k miles and have stayed in it for about 300+ days in that time. Food costs are the same as at home (well maybe 10% higher, no costco bulk stuff). We use P.A., Good Sam, State parks, TT, and some nights in transit, walmart. Over a 10 year life and allowing NO residual value for the 5'r or the TV, we would use it about 700 days (much more if I really get to retire and start to be a nomad). That breaks down to about $140 a day, Fuel costs are only greater while in transit to and from the destination (1800 miles each way) to snowbird. Camping costs average about $15 a day, and maintenance is no worse than home for the same time period.
When we used to travel by auto, the costs were around $200 a day (motel-$110/night, meals, $75 a day, coffee, snacks, etc. $10, in the mid 90's) plus fuel costs and I'm sure that figure has increased.
We have done a 3 month 8200 mile holidays at a cost, including fuel, of under $100 a day in the past 3 years so I feel it really is cheaper to RV.
If you factor in the residual value of the RV you come out WAY ahead. (IMHO)

5 years + as a volunteer firefighter/first responder paramedic until a friend of my son bought it a block from our home and I was one of the first on the scene. Took years to get over that one.

RE: rt. 101 in oregon
We have done the whole road down the coast, (101 & 1 )from San Diego to Washington, both directions several times with a 34' 5r no problem at all except for the road from Stinson Beach to Sausalito which is just too tight for comfort for our rig ( was fine for a 23' class c ). Rated as one of the top ten drives in the world.

Be sure you check the fuel mileage before you commit to either. Ford has a much higher fuel consumption than GM, at least in the choice between mine and my sons trucks. His has about 30k miles on it ( a 2008 1 ton 4x4 long box HD) and mine about 80k miles ( a 2005 3/4 ton 4x4 short box ) both of them are diesel. I get about 18-19 mpg empty in town, about 23-24 on the highway, and about 12.5 towing 11k lbs. My son gets about 14mpg in town, about 16 on the highway and about 12 when he has his 10' camper on. A loaner from the Ford dealer ( a 2009 gasser 1/2 ton) got the same mileage as his truck.
You may find Ford nicer, but there may be a large cost over time associated with it. IMHO

RE: My Dometic fridge caught on fire
We got included in the recall extension that we heard about from our dealer about 6 months after it was issued by Dometic. Unfortunately, we had already replaced the fridge out of our own pocket about 8 months prior. Dometic took 2 months to send us the form to claim for the replacement fridge and then took only 10 days to tell us that we were being refused when we didn't have the serial number of the unit which was replaced. Since they were contacted by the repair shop at the time, and refused to honor any warranty, even though the unit was equiped from the factory with a recalled unit, I am a bit PO'd at them. We are out of pocket almost $2000 and the response is too bad you didn't get the serial number of the old unit.
As you can tell I am REALLY impressed with the customer service displayed by Dometic and will be sure to let anyone who I talk to know about their total lack of regard for their customers.

RE: Long distance tips- share your experiences
We have done trips as long as 11k miles and both of us prefer the 2-2-2 method of travel. Leave fairly early, (before 8:30 or so) travel less than 200 miles, arrive before 2 pm, and enjoy 2 adult beverages when you get set up. That said, we have had days when we covered 600+ miles in a 14 hour day on the freeways, but we find it takes 2 days to recover from a stint like that. For us, it is not the destination, but the journey which is the high point.
