RE: Hooking Up Batteries

Here is my best guess based on what I see. First - get rid of the 3rd battery. It is just confusing the issue. Second - Large Black wire - connect to either negative post Third - 2 red wires - connect to either postive post Fourth - White wire - connect to either negative post Fifth - There appears to be a red wire and white wire laying to the right of your new batteries. I am guessing these were used to connect the two batteries together. Use the white wire to go from negative post to negative post of your new batteries. Use the red wire to go from positive post to positive post of your new batteries. Your new battery is going dead because you had the charger (small red wire and white wire) connected to one battery but not to the other battery that is powering the trailer (Large red wire and black wire). That is why you need to connect the two together using those red and white wires. One more note - when doing all of these connections be sure to turn the battery disconnect switch off

RE: Eazy Pass - with TT

When I signed up for my Mass. EZ Pass I had them send me 2 - one for the truck alone and one for the truck and trailer. I'll use the one appropriate for the vehicle being driven. Interesting note - after they arrived in the mail I went online to check my account. I had been charged for one of them on the Ohio Turnpike while in transit to me in the mail truck. It seems the foil bag isn't always good enough to keep it from being read when not being used. I called the Mass. EZ Pass people and they reversed the charge without a problem. She also advised me to wrap an unused transponder in aluminum foil for better protection.

RE: What size Bottle Jack is appropriate?

Well, if you have an 8k axle that means a maximum of 4000lbs or 2 tons per wheel. I would go with a bigger jack than that for 2 reasons. 1) it will be easier to use and 2) the larger the jack, the larger the pad on the jack for your axle to rest on.

Replaced Furniture Disposition

We have replaced the sofa bed in our trailer with 2 recliners for more comfort. I have seen a lot of other people here have done furniture swaps too. What did you do with the furniture you removed from your trailers? I currently have our sofa bed in the garage all wrapped up to protect it. I don't know if I should keep it to put back in when we eventually sell the trailer, try to sell it on Craigslist or whatever. What have the rest of you done with your new found surplus camper furniture?

RE: Ability to crank out a slide out

The slide in my Laredo can be cranked in or out using the same crank for the front landing gear. You insert the crank in a hole in the curb side of the trailer and it engages with the electric slide motor.

RE: converter cooling fan

Your battery will read full if the trailer is plugged into AC and the convertor/charger is working. You would need to disconnect from AC and check the battery with a volt meter to see if it is actually charged.

RE: Shed for camper

My 5th wheel is stored in a 40' x 60' pole barn with 16' walls. Centered in one end is a 14' tall by 17' wide roll up door with a Liftmaster opener. I have to back up to the barn at an angle and even though the door is twice as wide as the trailer it gets pretty narrow with some of the manuevering I have to do. It doesn't help that the barn is full of other vehicles, tractors, etc and I have to back the trailer into a slot between other stuff. My suggestion is to make your building as big as your space and wallet allow. You will never regret having too much space.

RE: Water heater tripping main breaker

Is it possible that your AC switch is switching the neutral leg rather than the hot wire from the breaker?

RE: Water heater tripping main breaker

Since the breaker pops even with the heater switch off I would say you have a problem between the switch and the breaker with your AC line. On edit I reread your post and you say it matters if the wires to the water heater are connected so I guess I am as confused as you. What happens if you remove the power wire coming into the switch from the breaker? Does the breaker trip then if you turn it on?

RE: Motor on slideout burnout?

I had the motor on my slideout go bad. I called Venture Manufacturing Co. that made the jack screw mechanism. The new electric motor was $50 plus shipping and arrived very quickly.

RE: The "L" in LCD

Think of it this way - How is that LCD tv delivered to the store you purchased it at in the winter time? It's in the back of a very cold semi trailer. It doesn't get hurt then and won't in your camper. Just let it warm up before use.

RE: Running Lights

When you plug into your house it energizes your 120V to 12V convertor inside the camper. The convertor is what normally charges your trailer battery. It is what is providing 12V and powering your running lights even though the battery has been removed. Since you said you just replaced the cord to your tow vehicle I am guessing that is where your problem lies. Take the plug apart and look for a short between the power terminal and running light terminal inside it.

RE: bike rack you hang on the ladder??

I had one and didn't like it. The weight of the bikes plus the shaking around seemed to be pulling the ladder mounting screws out. There is a whole lot of bouncing that goes on at the back of a 5th wheel and hanging all that extra weight off the ladder seems like asking for trouble. I wouldn't have a problem with securing a portable ladder to the roof ladder because it can be secured much better and won't cause a lot of twisting motion to the roof ladder. That's my 2 cents worth

RE: Black water tank

I have not tried this, but I know someone who has. Rather than dumping first he dumped a few bags in a tank that is 1/2 to 3/4 full and the drove home. The ice sloshing around supposedly cleans up the sides. If my sensors ever need cleaning I will try this. I'd like to put a camera in the black tank on a summer day filled with waste and watch the warp speed that that ice melts!! I'm guessing by the time you empty the bag what has been dropped in has already melted. :W For me it is hard to get a bag of ice home (5 miles) without it starting to melt on a nice summer day. I just think it is hilarious to think I could put a bag of ice in whatever gallons of poo poo water and it stays in there without instantly melting and does a rub a dub dub job on the tank. :h My money is on just plain water having the same effect. As I see it, you drop a couple bags of ice down the toilet and 2 things are going to happen: 1) The ice will float on top of the poo water in a single layer of cubes unless you pour in a ton of ice. 2) The ice will melt before you get on the road for it to supposedly slosh around and clean your tank sparkingly clean. The whole ice theory just doesn't make sense to me

RE: a/c problem

Just a thought. I had the same problem going on 2 years ago only happening at night. After several ticked off nights and scratching a bald spot on my head I just simply changed the breaker out and solved all problems. Simply put breaker had become soft. I had the same problem and solution. The A/C breaker was tripping at random times. Changed the breaker (it was also a dual breaker) and no more problems. As I recall, I had to get the breaker from the manufacturer of the converter because I couldn't find it locally.

RE: Towing bass boat behind my fifth wheel

I have a 29' Laredo and tow my double jet ski trailer behind it all over the state of Michigan. I've never had any problems thus far. The biggest thing to be aware of is your length. It can make some gas stations and parking lots tricky. You don't want to try to back the whole thing up very far. A friend of mine who is a very good fabricator and welder made the reciever hitch that is on the back of my trailer.

RE: Change which slide-out opens/closes first...

The order of the hoses on the manifold doesn't matter as far as what slide opens or closes first. Like donpop said, the slide with the least resistance will move first. Are all the screw valves on your manifold fully open? If so, I would guess that you could close them all and then open them 1 at a time to move the slide you want to move first.

RE: What do you do on a STEEP hill when your TV dies?

Do you have tranny temp gauge. It sounds to me like your tranny may have overheated and was shut down by the computer to prevent damage. You didn't say how you got off the offending mountain. IF your tranny cooled down and you then continued your drive, then I rest my case and recommend adding gauges. If not, how did you continue?? Sidney He stated the transmission was a 6spd manual so that probably wasn't the problem.
