RE: Why idle?

I sure would like to see the section in the law for that cite. I'm not saying it isn't there. I'm just saying I'd sure like to read it. Welcome to Maryland: http://www.mde.maryland.gov/PROGRAMS/AIR/MOBILESOURCES/DIESELVEHICLEINFORMATION/DIESELREGULATIONS/Pages/index.aspx Been cited for it with our old F-350 that was on an idle timer. Got cited even as the truck shut itself off with the officer present. Counts as moving violation :-/

RE: Fuse box problems

The box has the manafactories label WFCO T-30 Odd. The T-30 is their 30a automatic transfer switch. (I would have expected something like 8955ANC for your part number) Do you have a generator, generator prep, or an inverter?

RE: CARB causing air pollution?

Far as power generation goes; in general CA has exported their problem, not "fixed" it. Look at the net power flows from the western states into CA. Sure they have LPNG based power plants, but you have to burn considerably more fuel to get the steam required to spin the turbines to generate electricity. Sure LPNG burns cleaner, but as a customer who;s paying for the that fuel. This problem (ie the net flows of electricity) came to a head under Gray Davis during Enron. CA: your are on notice, your neighbors tire of sending you electricity ...

RE: What size of wire for Inverter?

Go big or go home. We used 0/4 marine superflex. (Got a very good deal on it) Don't forget to also use it between batteries (especially if using 6v jars) ...and a suitable type T fuse!

RE: Water filters

I am thinking about using an inline water filter for our next season of camping. We currently drink bottled water. The question I have is how do you know when the filter has completed the filtering process and you need to purchase a new filter. I am looking at using the blue inline filter. The inline filters in general are horrible and a waste of $$ IMHO. Most of (all?) filter at 100 microns. You can drive a truck through that! We use a two stage filter system: 1 micro particulate followed by a 5 micron KDF filter. The particulate filter is in a clear tub, so you can observe the soluble particulate. When it looks dirty, change it. the KDF, we change it every 2-3 years...

RE: Ok, whic tow vehicle...totally confused!

Nobody asked how many people would be in tow vehicle, and what type of supplies/toys (firewood/generator/bikes) would be going. This impacts the answer! True. Especially if crew cab. It's surprising at how little payload is left in a F250 4x4 CC LB. If looking at > 2 adults (children w/ $$ ? ;-), serious consider the F350 SRW. F150 not worth your time unless it's a recent model year. Remember, it's always best to have a bit more than you need than wishing you had more in the TV department ...

RE: Ownership cost between F150HD,F250 Diesel,F350 Diesel Dually

The only real difference is the dually to the others. Buying 7 tires seriously blows. However, I do love our truck. Every time we go out, I have no doubt in my mind the DRW vs the SRW was the right choice for us....

RE: SPECIAL LICENSE TO DRIVE ??

Does anyone needs a special license to drive a class A motorhome? In MD you you need a non-commerical A or B license if the GVW is over 26000 lbs and depending on if you are towing a trailer or toad with GVW over 10000 lbs or not. If 26000 lbs or under, the standad non-commerical class C is fine...

RE: Ways to feel more secure while sleeping out on the road

One of our major concerns about our foray into the RV world is feeling safe when we're asleep or parked. Then perhaps camping is not for you...

2nd the get a good front end tech to align it. Then get a good steering stabilizer on it. Fixed the wandering on our 2003 F350...

RE: Time to replace 5er tires......had a BLOWOUT !!

So why did you go past the recommended 3 years? 3 years? I was under the impression the standard replacement interval was 5 years. Both TL and GS have had articles to that effect...

RE: Installing a 2000 watt inverter

Not sure if this would go here or not. I have a 2001 Dutchmen 5th wheel and am wondering if anyone has a wiring diagram and directions on installing an inverter. I have a 2000 watt inverter and want to have 120 power for those times I am not near a 30 amp plugin. I am good with electricity and have no problems following diagrams. I know I can plug my 5th wheel into the inverter, which I have done at times, but that allows the 5th wheel converter/inverter to run also. I am wanting to avoid that. Don't want the extra drain on the batteries. We have done this with a 1800w Xantrex Prosine in our cougar. We have a PI EMS hard wired on the commercial side. We have the commercial and the inverter feed a transfer switch which in turn feeds the whole unit. We then deployed a 7230K892 relay from mcmaster Carr to control which loads we want to shed when on inverter power. We shed the AC, the converter, AC on the reefer and the hot rod in the water heater. We have the transfer switch set up to use the inverter by default. This allows for the saving in battery life as no energy is lost to relay pull up. Same with the control relay (ie it's contractors are off by default). We have the 2025 trimeteric to keep tabs on the string of Tojans we have in the front basement. It's a great winter project as it takes awhile to do the wiring. Not a lot of room behind most camper load centers...

RE: Don't text and drive

I'm thinking he was texting and never even touched his brakes when he hit the truck. No brake lights may have slowed the reaction time of the school bus drivers, causing the resulting pile up. I don't understand the appeal of texting, let alone doing it while driving. If the driver of the bus is only looking ahead to the vehicle he is following; he got what he deserved. Always look far ahead as you can and have a proper follow cushion. Gives you the ability to react and see things changing (ie slowing in this case) before the vehicle in front of you does. Can't see over it? Look through it. Can see through it, you are too close and need more follow cushion. In today's day and age one must imagine the most outrageous conditions and assume they will happen. Plan your exit or avoidance accordingly... :-(

RE: Winterizing in Pennsylvania

we stayed at otter lake this year, loved it too. i think site A-13 first pull thru in on the left with lakeview. Try LF-13 some time. After dark.... In the pouring rain.... After an exhausting 6 pull... On your first trip... With your first camper... Needless to say, that S shaped approach into that site was quite "exciting". DW was in tears after the first hour of attempt. Got in it in there after an additional 30 minutes of effort. Only to see tents on pull though sites the next morning. Ah well, the things we learn...

RE: Automatic VS Manual Transmissions...

I'm a handshaker at heart. However, with recent transmissions having what i consider the minimum number of gears and if you are lucky enough to have an Allison, I'll take that. Not that long ago 2 or 3 gears plus an overdrive that in some cases was just the lockup of the torque converter was wholly unsuitable IMHO. Thing have changed, and only seem to be improving (on the automatic side)....

RE: Cummins oil change - synthetic?

Yeah, but the PSD is notoriously hard on oil. The oil pressure activated injectors, the "filter screens," the HPOP. If I had a PSD, I'd run the best syn oil I could and change every 5k miles religiously. Was running 18k OCI on a 2002 7.3L PSD, no loss in economy, no loss in viscosity. If you are not testing your oil, you're guessing...

RE: Cummins oil change - synthetic?

No real need for a synthetic unless you want to push oil changes way out to the ragged edge (20- 25k miles) Contrary to popular belief, synthetic oils are NOT required for extended drain intervals. It's all about the TBN of the virgin oil to start in most cases, and there are non synthetic based oils out there with TBN that are the same or nearly the same as the synthetics and at fraction of their cost...

RE: Suspension damage again

I found that the spring eyes were oblong on several (both front) springs and that the springs had lost their arch. Why only the front, I don't know. Likely the front axle was overloaded. Folk over look how important level ride on the camper is WRT to this issue and braking. The best way to know what you have is to scale the camper and split the axles across platforms. weight on the axles should be within 200 lbs of each other assuming level ride and the equalizer has enough range of motion to do its job...
