RE: What's in your tool box?

What to carry can end up being a shoe box sized box with pliers and a crescent wrench to a half a roll-a-way tool box.
I have a canvas bag (BTW: canvas bags take up a lot less space than a box) with a drill motor and bits, a 4" disc grinder and the drill motor charger and batterys.
I have another canvas bag with wrenches, sockets, breaker bar and ratchet, various slip joint pliers. Electrical and duct tape, bailing wire and on the bottom various sized hose clamps all same brand so they can be used together and two handfuls of nuts and bolts loose on the bottom of the bag.
We New Mexicans think alike but I still use a metal toolbox. I add some fuses and a couple of foam pads for when I need to get down on my poor old knees. :B And of course the always needed flashlight.

RE: McGyver stories

ON our returning trip from Alaska, our slide room no longer operated via the motor. The problem with a deep slide is that when it's CLOSED, it takes up MOST of the room inside the RV. We found that it took 200 revolutions when hand cranking the slide open or closed so getting it to work as it was supposed to was high on my list. We had been hand cranking it since leaving Tok a couple of days earlier. Stayed in our overnight boondocking site north of Whitehorse on the Klondyke highway, for a couple of extra hours the next morning, to try and solve the problem but there was NOWHERE to get any help or even purchase parts. Pulled the inspection opening in the belly pan down and found that the top of the motor operating the slide room had simply vibrated loose and was lying inside the belly pan. With the help of a magnet on a stick, lots of stretching and muttering some bad words, I was able to retrieve MOST of the parts. The one thing I was missing was the little springs that hold the brushes in contact with the armature of the motor and without those springs it wasn't going to work. After searching through all of the misc. stuff that accumulates in the bottom of my tool box and parts drawer in the pass through, I found nothing that looked like it would work.
Finally I found an old ball point pen and took it apart to find that the spring was pretty close to the right size. It was also long enough that I could cut it in half and make a spring for the other set of brushes. Put it all back together and the motor worked perfectly (and still does today after three more years of use).
Best thing of all was that DW gave me some "points" as she was both impressed (and relieved) that she didn't have to take her turn at cranking the slide in or out. Not exactly a McGyver story but about as close as I can come.
All I can say is that's using your head. Good job. :)

RE: PVC Lamp/Name Board Post

Go to the Handy Hints, Gadgets, Projects and Gizmos thread and there are examples in it. They are not for a solar light but could be easily adapted. Basically they use a 3" Toilet Flange and then an adapter to go to 2" PVC pipe. At the level where you want the wood sign you put in a 2" Tee and reducer to 1" for the sign holder and add a 1" cap on the end. You would need to adapt to whatever fitting you have on the solar light on the top of the 2" PVC. Paint it to suit yourself. If you end up making one, please post what light you end up using. I have been thinking about making one but was planning to use a 12 volt bulb in a regular outdoor fixture mounted on a PVC pole as described above.

RE: US 550 Albuquerque to Durango

Good roads all the way. In Albuquerque the only campground that would be right on your way is a KOA just off of I-40 just as you enter the city. It's nice but nothing special. If you just want to park overnight the Sandia Casino on I-25 at Tramway exit allows overnight parking. There is also a KOA in Bernalillo close to where you go from I-25 to Hwy. 550. I live in Albuquerque so have not stayed at any of the campgrounds here but I buy my propane from the KOA off of I-40 and they are friendly people. Have a good trip.

RE: Paying for electricity w/ 50 amp

Amperage measures the strength of the current. Volume is generally measured in kilowatts per hour..Both of those statements would appear to be incorrect.
Nope. Both of those statements are basically correct.

RE: Nice little campground in New Mexico mountains

You're staying on the Turquoise Trail. You should take a ride up to Madrid while you're close. Fun little town with a couple of places to eat and some nice shops to visit. Probably 30 minutes from your campground. That's one of my favorite motorcycle rides (live in Albuquerque right in the foothills) up Hwy. 14 thru Madrid and on to Santa Fe. BTW, if you brought the rain showers with you THANK YOU very much.

RE: Vent covers

That would be the very first mod I would make if my new TT did not come with them installed already. I added them to my older HTT after we had it 2 or 3 years. I was very glad I did because one of the original crank up vent covers literally fell apart on the next trip. It left small pieces of plastic just laying on the screen. If I had not installed the new covers I would have had an open hole for rain to enter. It is hot and sunny in NM and the original covers just could not take it. As others have said, you can't crank open the original covers all the way but I can't tell that it affects the air flow much. By the way, I did replace the crank up cover so I could close the vent if desired.

Do you use the wax on the trailer decals too? I want to keep the decals from peeling on our new trailer.

RE: Help! We'rein Abq.NM headed to Grand Canyon

I'm in Albuquerque now too (I live here). It is currently 61 deg. and headed to 68 today. Overnight temp of 52 and a high of 75 tomorrow. This is pretty normal for this time of year. It is cloudy (praying for rain) so it does feel cooler. I'd spend the day walking around Old Town or visiting one of the museums and head on over to AZ tomorrow.

RE: New Member from Pensacola, FL

I'll be interested in this also. I didn't think it was possible to add enough solar on a TT to be able to run the A/C. That's why I got two Hondas.

RE: Do tires have to be changed at a certain age?

If Maryland requires a trailer inspection, then you could be forced to put on new tires but not necessarily buy from the inspector. Either way you are already running on borrowed time (and rubber).

RE: Double Towing OUTSIDE of Michigan...

Simple answer, no, you would not be legal. That's like asking can I drive 85mph in Virginia just because I can some places in Texas. Follow the laws of the state you are in.

RE: RV shopping.....loss of deposit?!

I'm not a lawyer (but I am related to one :B) but if you have proof of some type that the salesman either lied or unintentionally gave you wrong information you should be able to get your deposit back. If you have the proof and they still refuse the refund you may need to take them to small claims court.

RE: Using Weber 120 with RV Propoane

I had the sidekick grill with a QD adaptor connected to a hose which was QD'ed to the trailer fitting.
My TT had the two bottles, the regulator going to the QD fitting. When I replaced the grill I removed the fitting from the sidekick and installed it on the weber, and yes I had to remove the regulator, it works and is hot as I need it.
If you have a class "A" or "C" you may need other fittings that I am not familiar with.
Others mentioned getting a small propane bottle but that defeats the purpose of using your 60-150 pounds of propane you are carrying around. Too bad I didn't take pictures.
This sounds like the plan. I currently have the quick connect attached to the propone hose that I pull out of the TT wall to connect to my Sunbeam Sidekick grill. So all I have to do is remove the male fitting from the Sidekick, remove the regulator from the Weber and screw the male connector onto the Weber and call it a day??? Sounds too easy? Have to missing something or more importantly a part. If so, I'll pick up a stand for the Weber and I'll be good to go.
This will do the trick. Since you already have the fitting from the Sidekick you don't need to buy anything (except the stand if desired).

RE: Using Weber 120 with RV Propoane

I have tried this in the past, if you go with using a larger propane tank and running whatever adapters you need to hook up to your grill you should be fine.
Here lies the problem, if you get the appropriate adapters and hook into your RV-Q hookup on your coach then you will have an issue. The RV-Q's are designed to run on the low-pressure gas from that outlet.
This issue is that the regulator that your coach propane bottles run through are rated at a much LOWER pressure than what your coleman or other grill requires to operate. I tried hooking up to a couple different grills and outdoor stoves and neither would run properly on the low pressure output from the on-board gas.
Just my opinion, feel free to bash away, I got thick skin.
Gregg
You won't have a problem IF you remove the regulator on the grill itself first. You can't have a regulator on your grill and use the low pressure propane coming from the regulator on your RV's propane bottles. If you put a tee in the line between the RV's tank and regulator you could then run a full pressure line to your Weber and use the regulator on the Weber. Personally, I prefer to use a small stand alone tank for the Weber as suggested already so you can put the grill wherever you want it and not be constrained by a hose hooked to the RV.

RE: What does your RV forum name mean?

I started a business (custom gifts, trophies, awards, engraving, etc.) based on my hobby of turning pens on a lathe. I got into the real awards business because people wanted their name engraved on their new pen and I got tired of sending them out to be engraved. It's amazing what you can do with a laser. I still use the name PenMan.
Oh, Man....I though your were originally from Pennsylvania. Shoot! But I guess that would have been PennMan...
As for my Handle of DesertHawk.....it was my olden days 'CB' Handle from the '70s.
I live in a Desert & like the Desert, always liked Hawks...liked the 'M*A*S*H' TV Show....liked Hawkeye in it & the Hawkeye in James Fenimore Cooper's 'The Last of the Mohicans' even better.
I was always a good shot with iron sights growing up & liked the handle of Hawkeye.
Therefore,
DesertHawk.
Lots of good stories here. I was actually born here in NM and glad to be back after 30 years on the east coast.
