WiFi Ranger 6.6.2 is in the wild!

:B
WiFi Ranger has released 6.6.2 firmware into the wild. The update is being rolled out in waves so you might need to "Check for Updates" a few times over the next several days to install the new version.
I assisted with the alpha and beta testing and it is way more stable with several user interface improvements. Enjoy!

RE: LT hogging my bandwidth

A laptop is considered a PC as far as Webpage designers are concerned. They will send the page complete with all the bells & whistles. Your browser may be set to pre-fetch page links as well.
The laptop sees your hotspot as a WiFi connection so it will behave as if the sky is the limit bandwidth wise even though the WiFi connection is being supplied via a Mobile Data resource.
A mobile device is seen as a device that should get content that is compressed and with some of the fluff stripped to conserve Mobile Data bandwidth, so Tablets/Smartphones have much smaller bandwidth appetites.
You might consider fiddling with your browser's User Agent parameter to get the web to see it as a mobile device. (Back up the original first though.)

RE: Outside Shower

The door on a standard outside shower will not withstand that location if open. BTDT and have a new shower unit to prove it.

RE: diferent smart phones

The Motorola phones usually will have 2db better signal than all others. The Motorola phones typically have a less than stellar camera. Most online professional reviews also agree. The current best battery in any phone is the Razr Maxx (HD). I've found the Razr phones to be laggy compared to my Samsung S3.
...The goodies other brands sport become much less significant if you can't connect. The RAZR Maxx has its issues but it gets the job done when others are not seeing a usable signal. We camp & are frequently on the fringes. So Motorola is my story and I'm sticking to it!

RE: Longest Satisfactory Use of Easy Lube Axles?

I had problems and I greased it very carefully per instructions. I just put new brakes on and WILL NOT use the EZ-lube again. I also, found a pitted bearing once. You really need to check, these are made in China bearings after all.Replace with Timken Bearings and wave China byebye.
Where do you think Timkens are made? There are 2 factories right here in Union SC USA

RE: Best surface for tires to sit on for extended periods?

I would avoid storing on dirt/weeds/grass. The growth can find the micro cracks and start to invade. Over an extended period this will have a detrimental effect.
I store on PVC leveling planks through the off season.

RE: De-winterizing question

Hi travel4family
You can avoid filling the gray tank by using the low ppoint drains and the FW tank drain. The advice to utilize the city connection is spot on.
As mentioned you do need to sanitize and then re-flush the system.
From the wording of your post it would seem the unit is in storage and inconvenient to mess with, correct?
You may benefit by modifying you winterizing technique. I use an ancient small 2 gal Craftsman air compressor to blow out all the H2O from the system. Drain the FW tank, bypass & drain the HW tank, and recirculate the pink stuff through the pump using 2 3way valves I installed for that purpose. That keeps the pink stuff isolated to the pump and traps which I fill as the last step. Once all the H2O is purged from the system you could restore the HW heater valves to normal and leave the drain open till spring. What little might drip into the HW tank will have plenty of room to expand & pose no threat to freeze rupture.
In the spring 2 gal jugs of fresh H2O pumped through the pump to the ground clears the pump. I then sanitize and flush as mentioned above and I am good to go. You could do this @ your first stop as you prefer.
1 Gal of the pink stuff does our whole rig with plenty left over even after I make a generous fluid seal over the toilet valve.

RE: diferent smart phones

Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx (me) & Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx HD (DW).
We love our phones. At a recent rally in MD we had 4G ~80% of the time 3G the rest with an occasional drop to 1X. Fellow campers with iPhones or SIII's barely could get 3G or even 1X I loaned my Hotspot feature to one couple to facilitate a contract negotiation.
They indeed had more glitz but we were gitn'er done!

RE: water pump

If you have a hot water heater then I would think the air buble that sits on top of the H2O in that tank has been absorbed. You need to introduce air back into the HW tank. The air accomplishes 2 aims.
Absorbs thermal expansion of the water as it is heated thus minimizing pressure spikes.Introduces a short delay in pump cycles as the air will provide a push on faucet opening and the pump will run a bit past faucet closure to re-compress the air pocket.

RE: what signs for bearing failure

Regular bearings will heat the hub as they fail and will be rough if spun while the wheel is lifted off the ground.
NevR Lube bearings are another breed of cat. If disc brakes then the heat will be generated in the rotor by pad friction. As the bearing begins to fail the rotor goes out of vertical and runs diagonal in the caliper. When the failure is advanced the rotor will begin to make metal to metal contact with the caliper flange and the rotor will become very hot. Eventually the heat will propagate to the hub but the rotor will be first to show unusual temps.
I am not as familiar with NevR Lube & drum brakes but suspect the perimeter of the drum will be the first to see high heat.
We experienced 9 failures thus far till the wheel offset (-10mm) was ID'd as the cause and new wheels (0 offset) installed.

RE: Weather radios, etc

We have been using a rather old RadShack but it seems to want to drop reception of late. We will be installing a Midland WR-300 for our next trip. It runs on 12VDC so we will hock it up to the house power and it will be a rather permanent draw. Set to County Code ALL. unless we are staying a while and there is active weather events that awake us needlessly.
One does need to remember to set the channel on arrival.
BTW the Midland is our Bricks & Sticks unit so we have had some experience with it and now trust it. We will probably add another Midland this fall & scrap the RadShack one.

RE: Ideal Inverter Generator

...although any 3000 watt generator will have a tough time starting a 15,000 BTU AC...
We run our 15k AC on our Honda 3000! without issue & significant altitude on occasion. The air filter needs to be clean for altitude. Care needs to be exercised in managing how the AC is started and run is all. We start our AC if on the genny or 20 AMP shore power (SP) with the thermostat calling for a 2° reduction runs everything on low. Then we reduce the t'stat in 2° increments, keeping the AC running in low till we get to our comfort level. Once all is at our comfort level we let the t'stat do its thing and ensure we start the genny early enough. We ran on the genny & 20 amps SP for weeks in 100°+ temps in Alabama 3 summers ago without issue just using care.
Not "set n' forget" but it works for us!

RE: Pump Problem

Ok, guys thanks for the fast responses.
I took the faulty fuse out and replaced it with the TV fuse.
Now we can use the pump but not the TV till we buy some extra fuses to carry with us.
Don't matter because we never watch TV.
Anyhow, lesson learned... :-) Thanks again. At some point in the near future I would advise you to remove the sewer pump from the FW pump circuit and establish it on its own fused circuit.

RE: opinions on after market holding tank monitoring system

Our new fifth wheel has the worst gauges I have ever encountered. We do some dry camping and go to state parks where we have no sewer and need a more accurate option. I have read of Sea Level brand...is this what you would use? Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom. We upgraded to See Level II Monitors and are happy campers indeed. Our unit sports an insulated belly so that had to be dealt with. I went from fiberglass bat to 1/2" R-Max board. I did some other mods while in there.
The big deal is to get the tank surface clean and roughed up a bit for the 3M adhesive to stick. I then sprayed with several layers of undercoat to ensure the sensors would stay put.
Now when we go to a storm disaster recovery area we can push our tank maintenance schedule to the max and know exactly when we have to visit a dump station which may be a bit of a trip depending on the level of damage. (This is not exactly camping as we are often amongst the debris in a church or victim's yard & off grid)

RE: Water transfer pump

When I winterize I only put the pink stuff through my pump and blow down the rest with air.
To accomplish this I added a 3 way valve to the pump suction and another to the discharge.
If I want to add water to the tank from some sort of reservoir (gerry jug, bladder tank etc.) I would run a suction hose from the pump suction 3 way, to that and attach a discharge hose that is plumbed into the tank suction, to the pump discharge 3 way. I've placed a remote switch at the pump to control it from there if the main pump switch is on.
Water will be sucked from the reservoir & discharged into the RV storage tank.
It won't be fast but it will git'er done!
