RE: Leaving grey tanks open?

You would leave the grey valve closed if you had ever come across critters living in the drains. We have seen geckos and lizards who find that environment enjoyable. Also, snakes would be a concern of mine. Not the same topic, but this past winter we spoke with people who had a long thin snake come out the crack in the overhead cabinets where the TV is mounted above the dash. I would never be able to sleep again in that M.H. if it were ours. It would be up for sale in a flash!

RE: camping along Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia

If you decide to go to Louisbourg, there is a nice community c.g. right on the water in the town. It used to be run by Mary but she may be retired by now. Also check out the Playhouse beside the c.g. We have seen a couple of really good shows there and the price was excellent. At intermission they serve oat cakes and tea - just thinking about it makes me want to return (again).

RE: camping along Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia

I have taken the trail a couple time with TT, but would recomend taying in Beddeck,( Bras 'O dor Lake CG) use a a base right close to town, do the trail on clear days, cloudy you'l be in clouds, "make sure not to miss meatcove" But I would not take 5th W up there (although someone has) there is a lot to see in area, a day drive to Fort ST Louis is one not to miss. There will be lot of onfo here. I think this poster is referring to Louisbourg - a nice spot to spend the day but take a warm jacket as it can get cold there with the wind coming off the sea.

RE: Erie Canal NY Campgrounds

Thank you everyone for all the suggestions. We look forward to some good cycling and nice campgrounds.

RE: What do you do in a tornado warning when in the RV?

I would suggest to add Meds. to your escape pack if applicable. bumpy Also Passports (we are Canadians so always have them at the ready) I also add a couple of bottles of water and some granola bars to our take along bag. Over the past few years, we have prepared several times for tornadoes - very scary for sure.

RE: Suggestions for a good place to 'Snowbird' in a truck camper

Sorry I can't recommend any campgrounds, but something you should check is whether your chosen park will allow a truck camper - especially if you plan on removing the camper from the truck while parked for a while. Some parks do not allow TC period - just a heads up!

RE: Erie Canal NY Campgrounds

IIRC Canandaigua KOA is small and friendly. Not what I'd call a "KOA" if you know what I mean. You might want to look at their website b/c it was very nice and quiet when I stayed in May a few years ago. We're just looking for an overnight stop - KOA $46/night - sure not worth it for the sake of a couple of hours of bicycling on the Erie Canal trail which is not really close. Thanks for the suggestion though.

RE: 3 month trip to the Maritime Provinces

I would recommend you consider staying a lot longer on NFLD. One trip we spent 3 weeks just on the West Coast. Since you like to hike, you will find many trails that you will want to do. Newfoundland is a big island and there is so much to see and do there + it is expensive to get there. You might want to get an open return ticket so you can book your return trip when you have had enough. It is a lot easier to make a return trip another time and go to New Brunswick and N.S. then to go back to Newfoundland because you missed a lot. (You probably will want to go back to Nfld as well - most people do). If you are in good shape, look into the hike to the top of Gros Morne. It is an all day hike with a long stretch of scrambling over skree to get to the top, but the view and experience is awesome but not for a novice. Check out the programs offered at Gros Morne Park as well as the local theater.

RE: Best Truck Camper - Opinions and Advice Wanted

We enjoyed our Lance 1030 (pre slide) for 9 years and travelled extensively. Agree with others, a F250 will not carry a quality truck camper of any size.

RE: Grand Manan Island,NB.

What a shame to hear the park is closing. We stayed there a few years ago and it was lovely spot. When we chose a site and set up it was extremely foggy. When the fog lifted we could not believe the beautiful view we had.

Erie Canal NY Campgrounds

Can anyone recommend a campground close to Fairport or Pittsford. We want to do some cycling on this section of the canal and their doesn't seem to be much in the area. We do not do KOA

RE: Family Rv Trip to Alaska? So many questions!

Our first time on the Alaska State Ferry with our young children, we travelled in a Chevy Blazer and used backpacking tents, sleeping bags etc. We did not get off at any of the ports on that trip. One of the reasons was that often you docked during the night or very late in the day. The idea of finding a c.g. and setting up a tent in dark of night in an unfamiliar area did not appeal to us. So this is something to keep in mind. The cost to take a truck & 5th wheel on the ferry is going to be quite expensive. Gas is expensive up there as well so I think you would have to do a comparison. I think at the ages of your kids and with all the electronic gizmos available these days, they should be able to handle the drive. There are lots of things to see along the way. I think after the travelling you have done, you would be disappointed if you did not have your RV and the freedom it provides. Lots of people do camp in tents up there. Just taking your truck on the ferry would cut your costs. By checking the schedules and only planning on 1 or 2 stops during the day might work for you. You would only have to drive 1 way so less wear and tear on your truck. You mention about renting a car in Anchorage. Where you planning on leaving your truck in storage. The ferry does not go to Anchorage. Getting around Skagway, also Haines is very easy to do on foot. We took our kids up there twice - a long drive from the Toronto area. They survived and this was before the road was paved and there were no electronic toys back then to keep them amused. Since then, we have been on the Alaska S.F. 2X with our truck camper - the best way cost wise. Getting off at the various ports was always on our "to do" list and we enjoyed it. So, we have done similar to what you are thinking. There are definitely advantages to both your considerations. Either way is going to be a great experience for your children and expensive.

RE: New Orleans to Toronto

We have driven the Natchez Trace a couple of times and found it to be a pleasant and interesting drive. It has a low speed limit and there are lots of places to stop and see things that are highlighted along the way. Also 3 free campgrounds (no hookups). Also, we have done Nashville and if you have never been there, you might like to take a city tour and see the highlights, then explore further on your own. Stopping off in Memphis, Graceland is worth the time. We were there just after Christmas one year so it was nicely decorated + Elvis' birthday is in January and there were a lot of tributes on the property - an added extra. I mention this in case you are going South another year in January, you might want to leave this option till then.

RE: Orlando area RV parks

We have used Elite Citrus Valley in Clermont - an easy 10 miles from Disney. The resort is nice, beautiful pool, and good utilities. We have stayed here at Christmas the past 2 years. Lovely park with large sites and good amenities - bit pricey is the only drawback.

RE: Nesting Cookware- Anyone use those?

Since 1998, we have used a set of four nesting pots with lids. They are teflon coated, but are not scratched after 15 seasons of use. We do not use them for frying. X2 - we camp an average of 135 nights a year and do not eat out a lot so the pots do get used. They were purchased in 1999 when we got our truck camper and space was an issue. I kept the shaped cardboard forms that fit between the pots for shipping when new. I just put these cardboard forms between the pots after washing and the pots have stood up very well with no blemishes and few scratches.

RE: Passport America vs Enjoy America

We have had v.g. success with P.A. Some parks are better than others for sure, but if you don't like what you see, then move on. We also will not drive more than 5 miles off our route for any park so that is a factor. We just returned from a 99 day trip to Florida and our P.A. savings amounted to $635.00. For a fee of $41 for 15 months, this is good value. There are some restrictions, but if you are on an extended trip, it is usually easy to work around them. Also, some parks are flexible on their limitations. If the park is half empty, then some money is better than none. Try negotiating if you want to stay longer than the stated number of days.

RE: Triple EEE Regency with Murphy Bed

Thanks for all the advice. WRT to picking it up at the factory - we originally thought of doing this, just driving our car out with all the essentials and then doing a Western trip. The fee to pick it up at the factory is $1500 - our dealer will cover the shipping costs. Also, we need some extra wiring etc. performed to enable us to tow our Toyota Highlander. The items need to be removed from our current Class A and installed in the Regency. Our dealer is performing this - having it done at the factory would be an inconvenience but totally necessary in order to get our tow car home. Since there is no savings to be had, and it is more convenient to do things locally, we opted to do that. WRT to warranty - if we do not have to use it, at the end of the 5 year term you get a full refund. That makes it a little more enticing but still not sure that it is necessary. It is a gamble.

RE: Myrtle Beach Travel Park?

We have been going to this park for 41 years! We used to pay $4.50 for an oceanfront site with hookups. We have stayed at a couple of the other parks, but this is by far our favorite. Some trips we spend a few days at the S.P at the south end just to do things in that vicinity - then we move to the M.B.T.P. for the remainder of our trip. The location is perfect - easy drive to everything. We particularly like the fact there are no golf carts tearing around.

Triple EEE Regency with Murphy Bed

Well today we did it! We ordered a Triple EEE GT24MB. It will take until July to get it so lots of waiting but the anticipation is exciting. For those who own one of these units, we are wondering if you have had many issues with things going wrong or warranty issues. Our dealership is pushing an extended warranty package costing about $2700 for 5 years with a $200 deductible. We can't decide if we need this or not. I guess it is a gamble. Triple EEE have a reputation of being a very well built unit but all brands have their problems and flaws. What did you do? Opinions please

RE: Ocala, FL RV site suggestions?

We have enjoyed Wilderness RV Resort a couple of times. Close to the forest for exploring,. If you do go to Wilderness, sign up for one of the Monkey Cruises on the river or rent a pontoon boat (or kayak/canoe) and go yourself. There are 3 troops of monkeys living along the river and they are fascinating to watch. Silver Springs amusement area is gradually closing down and the S.P. is taking it over I think in September. I am surprised to hear so many negative things about Ocala N.F. We did regularly see one homeless person who just seemed to hang out along the highway and sit and play his guitar with his dog by his side. Other than that we didn't see anything negative but we do appreciate the heads up and warnings in case we return next year.
