RE: When to winterize? Weekend low temps likely below freezing.

I would in the least drain the hot water heater, and put in by-pass, that is real costly to replace. What do you mean by "put in by-pass"? What / where is the water heater by-pass? Bob, You should have a by-pass valve for your water heater so it can be drained and cut-off from your water supply in the winter. Mine is accessed through a small door under my bathroom sink. It is pretty obvious which valve does this by looking at it. I imagine your unit is equiped much the same. Hope this helps. Larry

RE: Furnace problem

I had the same problem with my furnace, same symptoms. Turned out to be a nest/cluster of dead lady bugs covering the little hole that allows gas into the burner. Cleaned that up and it worked fine. I actually had it done at Camperworld. Cost about $200 total. Oh well, I couldn't and didn't want to mess with the gas lines.

RE: Southwest trip

I am going to do the "follow the Santa Fe trail" trip one of these days......on a dirt road 1 mile south of my house and about 5 miles west is a Santa Fe trail marker.(just west of Lyons, KS)..the actual Santa Fe trail is so "wavy" that it crosses over 56 highway a bunch of times....when I lived in Dodge City my antiques shop was on "Trail St"..which is one block south of Wyatt Earp Blvd (hwy 50) and is the "original Santa Fe Trail"....almost every town in Kansas that is on the Trail (and where it's splits to the Cimarron) has a public library/museum where you can get county maps with the trail marked on it showing where it is and "current" street names, etc. (and Dodge City Historical Society has great resources on the Trail as does the visitors center 4 miles west of Larned) This is a good website to get info on the Trail, maps, and current directions to Trail Sights. http://www.nps.gov/archive/safe/fnl-sft/maps/miscmap/maptoc.htm great blog and pictures....looks like you had a wonderful trip! Yes, I did see some of the ruts left from the wagons. I also must say that Lyons is a great little town. They have free RV parking and I walked around the golf course the night I was there. Very pretty place. Kansas is a very RV friendly state with lots of free campsites, i.e. the state fishing lakes, lots of small town parks, and the rest areas. If you know anyone on the city council at Lyons tell them thanks for the great hospitality.

Southwest trip

Got back a couple of weeks ago from a month long southwest trip. Followed the route of the Santa Fe Trail from Kansas City to Santa Fe and then headed almost due west across northern New Mexico and Arizona and then up into Utah and came across southern Utah and southern Colorado. You can find details of the trip in my blog. My travel blog

RE: Two weeks offline, where IS that WiFi?

When we went to Alaska four years ago we would stop at libraries along the way and check email and do our banking. Wifi wasn't quite as prevalent as it is now, but libraries are a good source, especially going up through Canada and in Alaska.

RE: truck camper vs B+

I can see the convience of a B+ if it is raining or you are in a situation where you don't want to get out of the camper to leave a campsite. These are great advantages. If your B+ is to your liking and you are comfortable with it then I would say stay with it. My reason for getting a truck camper are twofold. I need a truck for other chores around the house, haul brush, lumber, etc., and the truck camper is a very convient way to travel. Wife and I love it. But also our truck is a 4-wheel drive and occasionally we want to go on roads without the camper, thus it is easy to drop at a campsite and head out to do a little 4'wheeling. We have done this in Colorado and in Big Bend NP. I plan on doing it on my trip to Utah shortly. Loading and unloading is not a problem, it takes about 10-15 minutes to do so. I carry four slotted plywood pieces under the camper to provide floor support when the camper is off the truck. I have never been denied entrance to an RV park, but we have hardly ever stayed at a fancy RV park per se. We usually boondock or stay at national forest, national park, or state park sites. Your choice is just a matter of personal preference and I would not go to the expense of switching if there was not a strong desire to have the ability to unload the camper for either truck use or 4'wheeling. Just my opinion. Larry

RE: Website with free campgrounds

Thanks Larry! Pretty timely post. I was just searching for a place to overnight in Wyoming on my way from Colorado and the Black Hills, and both those sites show a free city park (with Electric) right where I need to stop for the night. Here's a question though. They also list some rest areas and a welcome station that have RV parking, picnic tables and dump stations, but when you look on the state site (Wyoming) they say "no overnight camping" Rest at night means sleep to me, I don't use picnic ables in the middle of the night. So, do the Troopers run you off? I'm not sure. You might want to call the Wyoming Highway Patrol and check. I'm sure they would fill you in. I've only listed sites in Missouri since that is my home state. Larry

Website with free campgrounds

Found this website and it is pretty neat for finding campsites. If everyone will start adding to it, it could become a great site. I added a few sites in Missouri, especially along I-70 for people passing through and needing a nice free site. The conservation areas here in Missouri are nice and free. The only drawback is that they are generally for smaller units, i.e. small campers and truck campers. The only drawback to this site is it is a little slow. Please add some sites to it for the rest of us that like free campsites with trees and not parking lots. Free Campsite website Larry

RE: Keeping Refrigerator Lit While Underway

I'm sure someone has either an opinion and/or an idea of how to do this. I have heard something about putting screens in the louvered vent openings on the side. Other ideas? I really don't like the idea of running 12volts on the road. Mine won't stay lit while underway and I also don't want to run 12v. I freeze a quart milk container each night that is filled with water and then simply put it in the fridge the next day while I travel. This keeps things nice and cool and I don't have to use any energy to do it. You just need to remember to put it back in the freezer in the evening when you turn the refrigerator back on. Larry

RE: Outfitter Trip Report: A Grand Adventure

You did do a truly fantastic job again. Looks like great fun. I see you took the Tanner trail down and then the Beamer trail. Was it a loop or just down and back the same trail? Did you have to reserve campsites on the hike or is that part of the canyon just open to backpack camping anywhere. The only parts I have hiked are South Kaibab down and Bright Angel back up and North Kaibab down and Bright Angel back out. Guess I need to buy a good hiking map of the canyon. Looks like a great hike. Larry Hi Larry, How's things? Did you do your trip yet?? Figure to get some tips from you now. And yes, Tanner and Beamer in & out. Most definitely need a permit and itinerary as to general "use" areas you'll be camping in, but not specific campsites as there are none. Just wish it had been cooler temps! Thanks for the info Dave. No, I'm leaving next week on my trip. I'll try and post to my blog as I go. Looking forward to getting away. Larry

RE: Problem With Atwood Furnace

I had sporadic lighting not lighting and cleaned the combusion chamber. Lots of dead insects in there. I hooked up shop vac to the exhaust and blew compressed air in through the electrode hole at the same time. Works flawlessly now for days on end. I won't have to do it again since I put the bug screen on the outside. Why that piece of equipment isn't standard I don't know. I had this same problem with mine. Lady bugs had nested in it.

RE: Michigan and Wisconsin

For Michigan, as mentioned in the LP you need to get north of Ludington/Baldwin and there are lots of State Forest land. There are tons of "dry camping" campgrounds in the state forests, many of our favs are up around Traverse City area and there are plenty up to the bridge as well. There is much less forest in the southern part of the state, but I do know a couple spots, about 50 miles from the lake though. First is Yankee Springs Rec Area at Gun Lake, halfway between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. There is a regular "state park" type campground but there is also a rustic campground at Deep Lake. Over 120 sites, very wooded, many are quite private and a few overlook the lake off a bluff. Deep Lake info Another option is in the Allegan State Game Area. They are kinda hard to find, one of them is a few miles of dirt road off the nearest blacktop. There is a ranger station on the main road about 8 miles west of Allegan city where you can get more info. Both campgrounds do have vault toilets and a water spigot but that's about it for convenience. Fishing is available on the lakes nearby. Allegan county now manages the campgrounds. Pine Point Park campground Ely Lake Ely Lake is the one that's pretty isolated. The UP is full of national and state forest land so you're all set there. Have fun! Thanks for the information, especially on Allegon County. I've began doing a Google search for camping in all the counties I'm going to be traveling through. This does provide some good sources sometimes. Thanks again. Larry

RE: Michigan and Wisconsin

In Michigan boondocking is pretty easy-and I realize that is not what some posters have already said. Stop at a DNR office and get several "Camp Registration Cards"(a white form about the size of sheet of paper on light card stock.. They are good generally for camping anywhere on state land (much in N MI and UP) EXCEPT within 1 mi of SF campgrounds. Card is filled out w/ names and addy and left at site when departing. No charge for cards/ any campers dont use but leave yourselves open to problems. I guess the key is STATE land. NOT good on stste GAME areas from May 15-Sept 10th. I actually emailed the state forest people and they mailed me some of these dispersed camping permits. Very cooperative. Now all I have to do is find the spots. I have a DeLorme Atlas for Michigan so shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for your help. Larry

RE: The Truck Camper Wiki

Alright folks, the rough base form of the website is now online, if you go back to my original post, it has the information pertaining to the new Camper Wiki :). Good job Joe. Here is a site that I just added a bunch of locations in Missouri to, mainly along I-70 for people just passing through the state. I have a bunch more I could add to your wiki when I get some time, and as soon as I figure out how it works :). Check this site though. It is pretty good and easy to upload info, even if a little slow. Free Campgrounds
