RE: Expected life of Nev-R-Lube bearings

Mine just passed the 9 yr mark and we have over 100,000 in towed miles on them. They've not needed any service. Each year I do have the brakes checked etc. at a facility recommended by Dexter as a place that handles their 'overload'. They also check the NevRLube's - a pretty simple process - and assure me I'm still good to go.
That sounds like a positive report that we can find encouraging. I have had wheels off a couple times and checked brakes, I always check wheels for heat whenever I am traveling and make a stop. Have never noticed anything scary!

RE: Whats not to like?

I had pulled smaller 24 foot 5th wheels with a Toyota Tacoma for several years. I had two different trailers and two different trucks, both V6 and people were always amazed. The last trailer had a gross weight of 6,400 I believe. We had to have towed 20,000 miles with those rigs and did a lot of it in places where I would never take the rig I now have. Bigger is more comfortable but you always make sacrifices. I think your Tundra would be more than adequate!

Expected life of Nev-R-Lube bearings

Our 5ver is a 2002 model which we have only owned a couple years. We have probably put 12,000 miles on it and I have no idea what the previous owner tallied. My question is, "what is the expected life of the Nev-R-Lube bearings? I think they are great but I don't believe anything will last forever!

RE: TPMS vs. Rear Camera

I am kind of in the same situation as you, but towing boat and/or OHV and I think I would do the camera first. That is the inclination that I have at least. I would love to do both also but dollars add up fast!

RE: 2ND UMBILICAL CORD FOR GENERATOR NEED HELP

I am not sure but "if" you are thinking of using the umbilical cord that plugs into your bumper, Don't!!!! That is for 12 volts only, off your TV battery. If you want 110 volts you need to run to your shore power plug in the back of your rig.
If I am confused then I apologize for sounded dumb.

RE: Where's the full body paint?

I was just looking at a website yesterday, don't remember whos'. They had a price tag of $8,500 I believe for full body paint on their upscale 5ver. Nice to look at but I could travel for a long time for that amount of money.

RE: Quick! I need help

After a lot of problems I finally went to LT tires, 11,000 miles later and never a problem. And a more "peace of mind".

RE: Anybody ever have a wheel bearing go out

I had a wheel bearing go out on a boat trailer 35 years ago or so, not a good thing when you are far from a service center.
My 5ver has Nev-r-lube??? bearings. So, do they ever need lubed or just replaced at some point in time?

RE: MAX TRAILER WEIGHT TO PULL WITH A DODGE 2500

I can't answer the "any truck scales question" I am sure someone will. I think you are asking the right questions and you can and will get a lot of opinions here. If I had known about the rear axle limits, or been better informed, I probably would have bought a 1 ton rather than a 3/4 ton. I was actually shocked when I pulled on the scales and found I was over the rated rear axle weight of my truck. I bet a lot of others would be also if they really went to the scales.

RE: 5ver vs. TT for those that have had both

We too have gone from tent trailer, to PU camper to very small TT and now on 3rd fifth wheel. We have more room (2 slides) in this 28' than we can believe, we love how it tows, it is easier to back into tight spots than a TT, and we can and do double tow a lot (either a boat or OHV). In all honesty, I can say from my experience that the 5ver has it all over the TT when it comes to ease of towing. And considering that several feet of the 5ver is over the bed of your truck, it allows you to get into those state parks etc: where you may not with a TT the same length. MHO for what it is worth!

RE: MAX TRAILER WEIGHT TO PULL WITH A DODGE 2500

RWKH2005,
You don't state SRW or DRW. I have the same truck as you only 2006 SRW 4x4 Quad cab and pull a 28' 5ver with a gross weight of 11,500. I was really surprised to find when I pulled on truck scales that I was around 200 pounds over on rear axle weight! That was with water tank full and one passenger, no generator in bed of truck which I usually haul.
With that said, if you have a SRW truck, I think the question is not what can you pull but what will put you "over your weight limit"?
I pulled somewhere around 11,000 miles this summer and my truck handles great but I always have that nagging thought in the back on my mind that I am pushing the limit on my trucks capacity, at least for load on the rear axle.

RE: how about Holiday Rambler

I stopped at the Monaco plant in Colburn, OR a couple weeks ago and picked up a part. That plant is up and running, I was told that when they first re-opened they were doing 5 units per week and now were up to 10. Positive movement at least, I asked about towable units and was told that the company that bought Monaco bought all the towables also and hopes where that they would be bringing those units back on line. That does not answer your question about HR accept that they were part of the parent company Monaco. I think they were a pretty good trailer but have never owned one personlly.

RE: fifth wheel length - practicality

Sounds like we are the exception here! We worked are way from slide in PU camper to a 28'5ver with two slides. I understand the apprehension and we too prefer state/national parks and a lot of boondocking. We still have to "think ahead" a little when you go into shopping center parking lots etc: Fuel stops are very seldom an issue. We frequently pull a boat or utility trailer with a Polaris Ranger behind the 5ver. Still have never really had a problem but with that we have to be even more careful. Backing when double towing is a problem but other than that, for us, going to the 28' 5ver was great overall!

RE: Santa Fe to Taos to Cimmeron and north to I-70

Lynn,
Thanks for the current report, I have been watching all the Colorado and New Mexico Road reports, lots of closures from Taos to I-70 and then east into Kansas. I am hoping that all that will go away my Monday! Supposed to be near 80 in Phoenix by Monday and warming from there through the week.

RE: Santa Fe to Taos to Cimmeron and north to I-70

Thanks for the reports and the link to NM Road reports. I have no plans to get off highways on this section of the trip and if the reports by Monday have not changed, I can do a different route. Temps for the first of the week are forecast for the 50's.

Santa Fe to Taos to Cimmeron and north to I-70

I made this post about a month ago and got some great help BUT with the snow the last couple days is this still a good option? Planning to leave on Monday and the forecast looks favorable for the next several days.
I am making a trip from Arizona to north central Kansas the first week of November. I have made this trip several times but it has always been pretty much straight through. This time I am pulling a 28 foot fifth wheel with a Dodge Cummings 4x4 and I want to do some sight seeing on the way. I hope to get off the freeway at Santa Fe and then gong up to Taos, over the Cimmeron then to Raton and up to I-70.
Can anyone tell me what I can expect and and is highway 64 okay? What are my chances of getting into snow/bad weather?
We have done a lot of traveling in the mountains so that doesn't bother us but, doing it in snow would!
