Fuel at Border City

Just some information for those of you that usually fuel (diesel) up at Border City to get cheaper fuel than in Tok. This is no longer the case. There are new owners at Border City now & the fuel today was $4.89 vs $4.57 in Tok. We are in Palmer tonight & fuel here is $4.27. We will go on to Anchorage tomorrow & I'm sure it will be even less there. As I said, just some info for those of you on the way up so you can spend your money on something more fun than diesel. :) Safe travels.

RE: Camping options for touring NYC?

A few years ago we stayed at Newburg & took their bus tour. There is a train station nearby but we didn't use it so can't offer any info on that. Newburg CG is/was a very nice country type setting, we really enjoyed our stay there. We were in a 40' fifth wheel with a crew cab pick up so they can accommodate big rigs.

RE: Cleaning pleated curtains around front window?

I put ours in my front loader washer (not sure I would use a washer with an agitator) & once washed I hung them on the line to dry then sprayed them with StaFlo starch. When they dried I ironed the pleats & they look as good as new. Mine are lined so I had to press the lining a little too.

RE: Slider Hitch for F350 SWB

We have a Super Glide & wouldn't be without it. There is no way we would attempt to maneuver into some of the spots we get into without a slider & the Super Glide moves itself without having to get out & release anyyhing. The price difference in it & a regular hitch is cheap insurance to us.

RE: Nice campground close to Beaumont Texas?

We almost always use Gulf Coast RV Park, 5175 Brooks Road. We have also used Hidden Lake RV Park, 6860 S. Major Drive. Both are located on the west side of Beaumont just off of I-10. We prefer Gulf Coast for an overnight as it has easier access to the interstate. If you are a Passport America member both of these parks are members. Safe travels.

RE: Al-Can hwy

Hmmm, if it's that bad it has really gotten bad since we came that way 2 months ago!! We thought it to be in the best condition we have ever driven it. Sorry to hear that your trip was dampened by the bad road conditions. Hopefully it will be more to your liking headed out of Whitehorse, it usually is much better.

RE: Slide "Seal" Question

When we had a Holiday Rambler Endeavor with a leak in the slide seals the factory put the hook side of hook & loop (Velcro) fasteners on the sides of the slides. They put it from about 2" down from the top to about 2" up from the bottom. That is all it took to make the seals turn the correct way when running the slides either in or out.

RE: Where to stay first night in Anchorage

Homestead RV Park is now closed & has a for sale sign in front of it so don't plan on that one. There are others nearby but I can't remember the names. Ship Creek is VERY noisy with the trains running just outside the fence. Anchorage really has NO RV parks IMHO. Good luck.

RE: Soldotna, Alaska - Camping

If I am not mistaken Riverside House has closed down. There is however 2 others that are on the Kenairiver; River Terrace RV Park, which is right there at the bridge & Edgewater RV Park, which is at the corner of Funny River Road & Sterling Hwy. Both have hook ups & river access. Centennial Park does have river access but no hook ups it is all dry camping. Hope this is the info you were looking for.

RE: Info on Alcan Highway

We are currently in Alaska & I have to say the roads coming up here this trip were better than we have ever seen them. There are most assuredly some "bad" spots but if you will slow down & take your time through those rough areas you shouldn't have any problems. This is especially true where you see the orange flags at the side of the road as this indicates frost heaves. We have brought a travel trailer, 2 different fifth wheels & a 40 foot motor home up & out of 5 trips we have only had a broken windshield once. The key is keeping in mind to drive according to road conditions & when meeting vehicles on gravel stretches slow down & pull to the right side as much as possible. The roads are paved & as good as the roads in most of the lower 48, with exception to those areas where the winter weather takes it's toll. In our opinion, just come on up you won't regret it! We love it & keep coming back time after time as do many others. Definitely be sure not to miss Canada, the Canadian Rockies are as gorgeous as Alaska is. There are plenty of fuel stops along the way, but most say to remember to drive on the top half of you fuel gauge, which we always do. Feel free to send me a private message if you have specific questions that we can answer for you. I am sure you will get many answers but you will likely get more when the mod moves this to the Alaska forum. Safe travels.

RE: Rude drivers

Most of our RVing friends turn the signal on, let it blink 3 times & start to move into the lane they are signaling for. Works for them...

RE: Renting RV in Alaska: Pros/Cons

Back in 2001 we flew to Anchorage & rented a 30' class c motor home for a month. We didn't have a toad & although it might have been a bit more convenient to have a car on a rare occasion, we found that having everything we needed/wanted wherever we went was more than making up for not getting to go those couple of places a car would have allowed us. IMHO, I would stick with the motor home only & just go enjoy the beauty that you will find up there. We are currently in Montana on our 5th driving trip up there. We love that place!! Safe travels.

RE: Heater not lighting

Thanks for the replies. I went back through & rechecked all of the connections & although I am not sure what was wrong the furnace is now working just fine. Thankful that it wasn't something more serious since it is supposed to be 28 degrees here in Montana tonight. Mac

Heater not lighting

We are currently in Wyoming on our way to Alaska & the furnace will not make a sound. The heat pump is keeping the chill off but when we tried to get the furnace to light (as it kept getting colder outside) it won't light. There is no sound that it is even trying to light. I took the furnace out to clean it all out & "thought" I got it back in like it was. I also thought I tried it to make sure it was working but after giving it some thought I can't remember if I did or not. :o Does anyone have any idea as to why the furnace doesn't come on or even try to come on? Thanks for any help.:h
