RE: HUGE changes in my search for a tow vehicle

Thanks. This is the kind of input I need as I am also looking for a tow vehicle. Just caught this thread and read through it. I bought a dakota new in '05, quad cab, tow package, 4x4, etc... everything that you could get on one was on it. Drove it for 2 years solid, never a problem. Bought a popup camper when we first started camping and the truck pulled it just fine. Made a trip to Boston and back and the truck pull perfectly. In 2008 it started breaking exhaust manifold bolts on the drivers side. Ended up breaking 4 and warped the manifold itself, was replaced under warranty. Bought a TT, 21 ft Thor Tahoe lite last year. The dakota pulled it, but it was all it could do going up hills and even though I had everything set up right I encountered some swaying and dipping. Then in January of this year, went to start the dakota up and leave for work and it would not move. Had 41000 miles on it at the time. Called the dealership and had it towed in. Transmission was completly shot.... Replaced under warranty. It never towed the same or drove the same after the transmission replacement. 3 months later, which was in April of this year the rear end had to be replaced. I really like the dakota, alot, perfect for my needs, but after the trouble I had with it and every time I was at the dealership for oil changes, checking out my problems etc... there was always 3-4 dakotas in there with transmission troubles. To be honest I was surprised and confused as these dakotas were supposed to be really good. In June of this year, even though I almost had the dakota paid off, owed 4 more payments, I went and traded it in for a Silverado crew cab with the tow package. Went back to Boston on two trips this summer, pulled the same tahoe camper, and the difference was night and day. I knew the camper was behind me but it did not feel like it. Pulled the Poconos and Catskills like a car would. I hated to go into debt again for another truck but I am happy with doing that for what I have now and the ease of towing.

Thanks again. Keep the comments coming. I'm probably a long way from finding an available unit in my area but will keep looking.

Pleasureway love

I think I've just fallen in love. Pleasureway love that is. I'm not certain which model or powerplant but probably whatever $20K or so will provide. Any suggestions and comments would be helpful. Just for me and my SO and of course the dog.

RE: PUP With One Bed On Craigslist!

The request was from me. It looks good. Anyway of finding out where it is? The size looks perfect for me, my SO and dog. Can you tell whether or not it has elect. brakes? I've just discovered that I would need them if the weight is more than 1000 lbs.

Rialto opportunity

I have a good friend that has a car dealership and he told me that he has a chance to take in a 1996 Volkswagon Rialto for trade. He's been looking for something for me for a couple of months. Any thoughts. It supposedly has about 30K miles on it and the only known issue is the refrig. Any pros or cons pertaining to a Rialto would also be appreciated.

pop up's

It appears that (for my current budget) if I want to travel soon that the only real ulternative is going to be a pop-up. I see more on the used market than B's and C's. My question is whether or not there are models that have only one bed for two people. I asked Coleman and they said no. I like the idea of being off the ground when camping and these seem to be the answer. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

RE: Not certain

I imagine that one of the values of this forum is that we discover that we aren't alone no matter what our experience level. You've all been very helpful. Knowing that I'm not alone in having to travel hours to find what I want. Also the floor plan will be important. We both would want a comfortable bed that can stay made up unless we decide not to. I think a "sneak and peek" trip is in order. We don't live to far from the I95 corridor and will just have to travel south until we see a few. Thanks again.

RE: Not certain

Thanks again everyone. She has never been camping and can't visualize traveling and sleeping in the same vehicle. Other than her uncertainy the other major problem is that this area, even though we represent around 1 million people is still not large enough to support large RV dealers with rental units in any size other than the 30 footers. I'll probably make another trip to Florida (1000 miles) where there seems to be a wealth in RV lots. I enjoy this forum and will keep you posted.

Not certain

I've been bouncing around the B's & C's and not really certain what I want. I'd probably be satisfied with a Tiger but will the SO accept it. Lately I've been thinking of the old Toyota camper van with a generator and back seats that fold into a bed. Also towing a Pop-up for those longer stays. Really the logic in all of this escapes me. I love to camp, she doesn't know. I feel that whatever decision I make will end with me selling what I've bought. Has this happened to any of you?

RE: Anyone ever buy or consider buying rental class C?

A used 20 footer is just about what I'm looking for. Can't find any in my area. We collectively have a population of a bit over 1 million people but very little in the way of used RV inventory.
I considered renting but the little info that I could glean was sizes bigger than I wanted and for a lot of money ($ 300 per day). I have tried to fill out the questionaires with some of the national RV dealers but seem to be bombarded with SPAM's so I quit doing that.
I'm open to suggestions.
