RE: Break-away cable on trailer keeps falling out

Thanks for the suggestions and info. I will pass these messages on to DH. We will be taking the trailer to the dealership tomorrow, so it's helpful to know what to ask for or look for. You guys are great! :)

RE: Break-away cable on trailer keeps falling out

Appreciate the input. We will have them check out the brakes, too. Thanks.

RE: Bears & Pop-ups!!!

Of course it was staged. It's a commercial. But shows the strength of the bear and it happens in real life. That's why there are warnings in parks here in CA, including leaving food items out in cars. The reason why anyone violating the rules gets read the riot act by park patrol is because bears that learn to get food from campsites and cars, have to be killed. Here are some pictures (including a car with a destroyed door where a bear was looking for food... inside the car)... RE: Break-away cable on trailer keeps falling out

Thanks, newfie. DH has taken great care to secure the cable when traveling. Since it should be a simple fix as you say, I think we will stop by the dealer soon before we use it again. Thanks again, for the suggestion.

Break-away cable on trailer keeps falling out

DH pulled away from the trailer and forgot to unhitch the break away cable and now it won't stay in place. And when it falls out, we have all kinds of things happen. Like the propane alarm going off in the middle of the night (dead battery because the break-away switch is on). We really thought we must have a propane leak (tho I couldn't smell it). So while it was 30 degrees outside, we opened the door and fanned the air and I nearly froze to death! Arrggggg. Any suggestions short of taking it all the way back to the dealer to have them fix it? Thanks!

RE: Dry Camping in a PUP in Cold Weather - Lesson Learned

I'm pretty sure our foam mattresses are made out of the outdoor, dacron foam. They are an open cell type that allow water to easily exit and are fire retardant. I just looked at them tonight and that's what I found (it's also why they are so uncomfortable, not spongy but very hard). And I also think this is why they are so *cold*! If it is designed to allow water to easily exit (makes sense for a popup mattress), then it also allows air (cold air) to circulate inside the mattress. To heck with that. I'm exchanging that for a regular, high density foam topped off with memory foam (which is warm, anyhow). But I also layered first with a bubble foil, 1" ext. housing foam insulation, then the high density green foam topped with memory foam. We have used with success those foam pool toys (the long, round foam tubes that can be assembled in different shapes) and squeeze those along the head and foot of the bed between the canvas and mattress to block any air flow through the sides. I like the blanket hanging over the poles across the top idea.

RE: Bears & Pop-ups!!!

For those who think that a bear can't make it's way into your thin-skin "hard side" trailers.... don't be so sure.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLis6jWc05M

RE: We've got AC!!

What does that AC ready actually mean? There is an existing vent that we installed a Fantastic Vent in its place and would like to just put the AC in place of that unit. Does the AC ready mean there are power leads around the inside shroud of the existing vent? I can't remember seeing any wires in there and we had to run 12 volts from a nearby light for the Fantastic vent. I just want to be a bit prepared when it gets here so we can complete the install quickly. Thanks again for such great pictures.I have been avoiding this because of install concerns. You're welcome and we understand the concerns. We asked a lot of questions ourselves and especially were looking for photos of an installation. When we couldn't find any, we decided to record our installation with photos for others. We already have a vent over the shower area that cools the trailer most of the time by simply pulling the hot air out of the trailer and keeping a breeze going through (not to mention acting as an exaust fan for the shower/toilet area). So we didn't want to remove it. I think some people may use that hole for an AC but you would still have to run an electrical cord from the unit to one of the outlets (our outlet is near the heater on the opposite end from the exhaust vent). Our popup does not have power running through the ceiling to the AC-ready framing. In our case, AC ready meant the roof was strengthened (framed out) to handle the weight of the AC near the center of our popup with an available outlet nearby. In our case, we could barely see the outline of the framing when looking across the top of the roof and the ceiling inside. If you check our photos, you can see how we handled the cord running from the AC to the outlet. I hope this helps but will have DH check my message to see if I left anything out. Seriously, it was waaaay easier than we anticipated (except for the weight of the unit which DH handled himself because I'm not supposed to be lifting weight like that). I think our biggest question was how difficult it would be to cut the hole and it wasn't at all. We asked about using caulking and were told "do not use it, the gasket that comes with the AC is your seal." That was from professional installers. Good luck with your install. :) Jackie

RE: We've got AC!!

I have gone 2 weeks of camping with virtually no clogging of the filter and other times it clogs in 1 week. It all depends upon the area and climate you are in. I have gotten in the habit of sliding them out every 3-4 days. That might take a whopping 30 seconds to do. Keep those clean and you'll love that unit. Greg Thanks for the tip! We will definitely keep that in mind. Do you clean them by running water over them or vacuuming them?

RE: We've got AC!!

Campfido I have the Starcraft 34 rt which is similar to yours. Can you provide some more detail on the install? Which unit did you purchased? How does the electrical get routed to the designated plug? What did you use to cut the hole? Thanks Jeff, I've put some photos up on photobucket describing what DH did to install the AC. This is Carrier's low profile (7 inches), 15,000 BTU AC we ordered from PPL - highly recommend them!). We used stick-on channel you can pick up from any of the big box home improvement centers (sold for hiding cords, cables, etc). Here's the link (doesn't seem to work too well in Netscape) PUP AC Installation Let me know if the link isn't working. I've never posted an album before. If you have problems, there should be a link to the album, upper left titled PUP AC Installation you can click on. Jackie

RE: We've got AC!!

It's the lowest 15,000 BTU AC they make (seven inches). Since ours is an off-road popup with larger tires, higher off the ground, we were concerned about getting it in and out of the garage with an AC on top. So we went for the lowest profile unit on market.

RE: We've got AC!!

Thanks! DH did a terrific job. Probably the most worrisome part of this to us was anticipating cutting the hole in the roof. Piece of cake. Now, I can't believe we even worried about it. :-)

We've got AC!!

After lots of questions asked here and lots of advice given (thanks!) we finally have an AC in the popup. DH installed and I took pictures of the installation which will be posted as soon as we can get them up somewhere. In the meantime, this is the result (pretty much anyone can do this - thanks for all the advice and suggestions): Update 7/2 - These are the AC install photos http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d156/jmsailing/Misc/DSC_8423.jpg

RE: Cutting a hole in the ceiling of a popup

Campfido, Have you thought of moving your vent to the "new hole" and putting your A/C in the place of your current vent? Would this be easier? Dan Uhm... not sure why. At any rate, I think the AC is more effective in the center of the popup which is where we see the outline of what appears to be the framing/support for the opening to add an AC.

RE: Cutting a hole in the ceiling of a popup

I think I would do without the vent and put the A/C in its place. Why not go with a sure thing, rather than risk doing damage to your roof. Just my thoughts... Dan Because we don't want to do that.
