RE: Socket size for HWT drain?

You did not say what brand of water heater. If it is a Suburban brand it is 1 1/16.

RE: Insurance in Florida for RV in storage?

Where are you going to store it? Be aware that with no collision coverage you could still have a loss it someone hits your motorhome and takes off. That will not be covered by comprehensive.

RE: Route advice for next summer's trip

Are you comfortable with mountain roads? 6/7 percent grades both climbing and downhill. Some of the roads may have several switchbacks. US 550 north of Durango might not be a good choice. You might want to read other posts on this road. The suggestions for Aspen and Leadville will require leaving I-70. And Aspen itself is not very RV friendly. Highway 24 from Minturn to Leadville has some steep grades and turns. But there is things to see in the Leadville area. You will pass Camp Hale north of Tennessee Pass which was the WWII training area for the 10th Mountain Division. At the top of Tennessee Pass at Ski Cooper is a large monument to the 10th Mountain Division. Leadville has a rich mining history also the National Mining Museum. Only two commercial campgrounds and some forest service campgrounds. The two highest mountains in Colorado, Mount Elbert and Massive are just west of town. Colorado 91 goes over Freemont Pass and connects back to I-70. Steep in a few places but a good 2 land road. In Breckenridge you have one choice for a campground. Tiger Run RV resort. Not cheap and you best have a reservation in July. I-70 east bound from Grand Junction no steep sections until you are east of Vail. Glenwood Canyon is very scenic. Vail Pass is about a 8 mile climb with 6/7 percent grades. Then downhill to Copper Mountain. Frisco east has a steep downhill to Silverthorne then a 8 mile 6/7 percent climb to the Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnels at 11,158 ft under the Continental Divide. 12 miles of mixed downhills to Georgetown. The Georgetown Loop Railroad is from the mining era and only takes a few hours to ride it. Idaho Springs also has a lot of mining history. The Argo Mill is an interesting tour. The rest of the trip to Denver has one 3 mile climb, Floyd Hill. The Genessee downhill is about 5 miles so watch your speed.

RE: NITROGEN in tires

Boought new 5er. Sticker says tire are filled with nitrogen. This is new to me. I always check tires before leaving. Can I add regular air or do I need to go have nitrogen put in them. After I write this, it sounds like a stupid question. What's your opinion of nitrogen. Racers use N in their tires, especially dragsters, due to its property of not expanding (much) with heat. NASCAR boys only run about 22-30 lbs in their tires and fuelers run about 2-5 psi. When pressures are measured in single-digit increments, or less, it's critical they know the property of what's going in the tires. For us normal guys, I think it's a gimmick. Lyle I can't speak about the nitro dragsters and funny cars using nitrogen. But I have spent time around some Competition Eliminator and Pro Stock cars in drag racing and never saw nitrogen used. The slicks were filled and tire pressures adjusted with the same air hose that was used for air tools, etc. These were experienced racers who have won national events.

RE: I 80 from North Platte to Salt lake city

The areas west of Cheyenne and west of Laramie can be very dangerous if their is a storm. There was another bad wreck last week in the latest storm. Often these involve several vehicles and usually some semi trucks. It is not unusual for the trucks to be completely destroyed. Bad visibility and slick conditions in the storm are usually the cause. There was one several years ago that involved over 30 vehicles. There was a large fire in the wreck burning several semis and other vehicles. If I remember correctly two people were never found because the fire. If there is a winter storm stop and wait it out.

RE: Propane tank in MH

During the winter a massive storm hits your area. The power grid is damaged and no one has electrical power. Many of the fuel dealers and propane dealers cannot open due to no electrical power. The few that can open have long lines from people not prepared for the storm. You might need your MH for heat and power. Would you rather have the tank 1/2 full or completely full?

RE: RV insurance

DO NOT use 21st Century for ANY RV insurance. They gave me a quote and it was a good one. Six weeks later they tried to jack it up substantially. The original quote was based upon what I paid for our 2 year old TT, $10,000. The new inflated rate was based upon what that 2 year TT sold for new, $18,000. They would not insure the trailer for market value only the original sales price. These idiots don't know an RV from a hot rock and I can only imagine what sort of nonsense would arise in the event of a claim. I told them to shove and ended up with Farmers who was even cheaper than 21st's original quote. :M Do you know who owns 21st Century Insurance? It is owned by Farmer's Insurance.

RE: Starting from scratch

A few ideas and thoughts. Do you go to the same places on a regular basis? Or constantly having to go to a new place? Get a copy of one or more of the RV campground directories. See where there are campgrounds near your work locations. Is it possible to find a campground that is close enough, with a reasonable commute, that you can use for two weeks at a time. You can take advantage of the weekly rates, save you money, and save money by not moving the RV over the weekend. Plus this gives you more time with your wife and the girls on that weekend. Also there will be some campgrounds that have more features for your wife and girls, nice location, good playground, etc.

RE: For Anyone Looking for a Class C on a F-450..

I thought I read that Ford was going to continue making the E-450 cutaway. They were just replacing the regular Econoline vans.

RE: For Anyone Looking for a Class C on a F-450..

There is a drawback to using a F-Series vs the E-Series van. The bumper to back of cab distance on the E-series van cutaway is about 7 feet. The F-Series pickup has a BBC (bumper to back of cab) distance is 10 feet. So the same motorhome box on the pickup chassis will be three feet longer in total length.

RE: Looking at a Express 3500 for towing

Trans coolers, in several styles, trailer hitches, locking differentials are all available in the aftermarket. If you look for a van in the best condition, mileage, condition of the body, if used any of these can be added. If shopping new and find a van that is close to what you want and can get a good deal these items are easy to add.

RE: Shore Power

That is not a 220 plug! If you plug your motorhome into 220 you will be replacing a lot of electronic and electrical equipment. That is a 50 amp RV plug which is actually two 110 circuits. The adapters are used to be able to use your shore power on a 30 amp 110 outlet. Or step down again to a 15 or 20 amp 110 outlet. If someone else wants to post some details that is fine. Again don't plug into a 220 outlet thinking that the motorhome needs 220.

RE: camplite trailer lug nut size

If you are using a socket you might want to have deep set sockets. I would also carry a cross form lug wrench. They are not very expensive and gives you another tool in the event you have any problems using sockets.

RE: Pulling toad through a steep driveway

How level does the tow bar usually sit. The recommendation is usually within 1 to 2 inches of level.

RE: 4 Gage Wire Connectors - Molded Plugs

You can probably find the Anderson style connectors at a off-road 4 x 4 shop. They are used with the heavy loads on the electrical cables for winches.

RE: bike racks for motorhome

Did you have any additional support to keep the bike rack from bouncing around? The problem with any bike rack that has just one mounting point in the hitch is that there is a lot of movement. Four bikes are probably 100 lbs or more of just static weight. With four bikes there is a lot of leverage since the distance from the vertical part of the rack and the last bike is probably 3 feet or more.

RE: Cold weather use-> heated pads vs forced air for tanks

What about the insulation for the basement/tank areas? Are the tanks just enclosed or are they also insulated? I have seen RVs that have enclosed basements and they talk about being heated with the furnace. But the walls or floors were rotocast plastic with no insulation. Also what about the dump valves? If the dump valves are not enclosed and heated you will still have problems.

RE: Goodyear G647SS 19.5 dually tires, any experience with them?

Did you check the age markings? How old are these tires? Why would tires with 95% tread depth be pulled off the vehicle?

RE: To Tow or not to Tow.. senior grammma

Consider the ReadyBrake and their tow bar. The brake is much easier to hook up. Does not drain the battery or require moving the brake setup in and out of the vehicle. Plus less money.

RE: Air brake Trailers

When you talk about auto transport trailers I am assuming that you would want to tow behind a motoehome like in your profile. Research companies for "coach" trailers. Featherlite trailers, Renegade by Kibbi would be a couple of companies that might offer them. Also see what Newell might offer. T & E Ent is a custom race trailer builder located in Illinois and I believe they also make coach trailers. Elite Motorsports in Oklahoma is a dealer for race transporters and may know of some other manufacturers.
