we were at molly brown last june. our site (6) was right on the lake.
our 26 footer fit perfectly but I think anything bigger might have had some issues. in site 6, we had to back down the driveway. which I didn't know until I got there.
make res for august right away. the res window for recreation.gov is 6 months. not sure about sites at the other cgs there. I road my bike through them but didn't look at any specific sites. I did, however, feel that molly brown was the best of the cgs there.
I don't believe anyone has commented on the age of you vehicle. if your tv is still the'02, I would rethink any trip of that distance from IL. my '02 sits in the garage most of the year (I drive it locally nov to march and snowplow my driveway with it) and do not pull my trailer with it anymore. 14 - 15 years old, yikes. since my '02 turned 10 it has been in the shop about once per month. well, on second thought, maybe I can pull some more since half the parts including: transmission, drive shaft, water pump, exhaust, transfer case, rear axle, etc. are rebuilt or new.
like mentioned above, Ottawa lake is nice. another state park is pike lake about 30 miles nw of Milwaukee between Hartford and slinger on hwy 60. we stay in sites 29 and 31 which are nice, big, and easy to get into. you have to drive through the rest of the loop, which is narrow, to get to these but if you go slow you would make it.
playful goose is too far away at about 55 miles.
we were in that area for a week last june and did most of the stuff listed by others. we, however, decided to stay at Mueller state park (on 67 south of divide) rather than Cheyenne mtn. Mueller had forest around the sites while Cheyenne was pretty much in the open . it was a little farther to drive to do stuff but we felt that it was worth it.
