RE: 2wheel drive or 4

We tow with a 4x4 cc sb Duramax and have no issues. I wanted a 2wd, wife said get a 4x4 because we tow out in the boonies. I've used the 4x4 on more then one occasion with the trailer plus I've pulled other campers out of mud or sand.
All it takes is one incident to regret that 2wd.

RE: Desert camping w/ freezing temps

Dove Springs for MLK weekend it got down into the 20's. Sure enough we awoke to a frozen fresh water tank and lines (yes I had the heat on all night).
Around noon the waterlines thawed and we had water. I ended up blasting down to Ricard campground with a 5-gal water jug for water in the morning. Most likely the design of the TH and placement of waterlines will determine if yours will freeze or not.

RE: Moab Info Needed

I ride a dual sport but the kids ride quads. I'm going to try Archview for my first trip to get familiar with the area.
Thanks for all the input.

RE: Carson toyhauler

You don't need a credit union. We paid $14,750 for our Carson out the door. We put $6K down on it and then we got a no interest credit card that allowed us to use a cash advance check. They charged us for the check but that was nothing if I had to finance the $8k at a credit union.
We paid off the remaining balance in eight months interest free :).

If you enjoy riding and spending your time with family in the Mojave desert (California) I'd suggest you do it more often.

RE: Carson toyhauler

I own a 05 Carson FunRunner 21ft and pulled it the first two years with an 05 Chevy CC 2wd 5.3L auto with 3.73's and the factory tow package. Never went over 60mph. Just watch for cross winds and semi's. Be extremely vigilant going down steep grades and take your time going up.
After one fateful trip with an extremely steep grade I decided the family's safety comes first and promptly sold the 1500. My Duramax never flinches. I'm like you couldn't really afford a diesel but then again I couldn't afford to take any more risks towing.
Enjoy,

Moab Info Needed

Looking for info on dry camping with atv trail access around Moab. Found one rv park (Archview) with trail access but was wondering about BLM or other campgrounds that might have atv trail access.
Thanks in advance.

RE: Diesel Maintenance

I do all my own maintenace (oil change, lube, tire rotation, filters, etc). Not too hard to do and it gives me quality time with my truck. Just make sure you have the correct size container when you drain the oil. Don't ask me how I know :(.

RE: Diesel Back to Gas!

Well guys I told the wife this weekend about my idea and she promptly put her hands around my neck and started to strangle me. She said "NO WAY ARE YOU SELLING THAT DIESEL TRUCK".
So I guess that solves my problem. Thanks for all the input about the V10.

RE: Diesel Back to Gas!

Let me answer some of the responses:
1. No I am not upside down at all.
2. If I sell it I plan to ask KBB private seller price, $28,500
3. Pulled my TH with a 6.0L already, not bad but I know it would struggle on hills in California.
4. Prefer the V10 because I might someday get a fifth wheel (then I'll want a diesel again).
Yes I know my Duramax is awesome but that is not the issue. I just want to free up some cash for the family.

RE: Diesel Back to Gas!

Unfortunately getting rid of the wife isn't an option at this point.
Thanks for all the info on the V10. I know it does sound crazy to go from a diesel back to gas but I'm sure I could adjust back. My toyhauler is only a 21 ft, 7500lbs loaded. I'm sure a V10 could pull as easily as my diesel.
Sometime in October I plan to put the truck up for sale, if it sales it sales, if it doesn't I'll keep it.
Thanks for all the advice,
Philip

RE: Diesel Back to Gas!

I thought about the 8.1L Chevy but feel the V-10 might be a better deal. This thread isn't about Chevy/Ford bashing. I've owned both. Found a couple 02 F-250 4x4 V-10's with fairly low mileage for around $12K.
I have 36 months to pay on my loan. At the current monthly outlay of $700, I'll pay $25K roughly (this includes yearly registration, yearly insurance and monthly truck payments). Buying a $12K used truck would save me roughly $13K
Yes I know my D-max kicks butt. What good is a vehicle that sits for weeks at a time or even a month and not get driven? Basically the truck would be used for the summer camping vacation and a few times during the school year.
Originally purchased the D-max on the premise that we would upgrade to a fifth wheel because we use to camp at least once a month but the wife has cooled on that idea.

RE: Diesel Back to Gas!

Yes that is my truck payment, insurance and license totaled up. It cost me $600 to license my truck this year due to the Cali tax increase.
Let me state that this is not an issue of me not being able to afford the truck, I can. It's an issue of use. Besides our trips this summer the truck sits during the week. I drive my wife's car to work and I have a street bike I ride on occasion.
The company I work for is a GM supplier so lets say I got this truck for a "steal" two years ago. If I can sell it for private seller price off KBB.com, my loss is minimal.
How about some Ford V10 info?

Diesel Back to Gas!

I know it sounds stupid but I am contemplating selling my 07 Duramax CC 4x4. My wife and kids no longer think camping is a priority so I don't see keeping a vehicle which I would use only on occasion. Including insurance and license I pay over $700 per month here in California.
So with that I've thought of selling the diesel and buying a older Ford F-250 (02 - 04) with the V-10. Can anyone give their experience towing with the V-10. It appears to me to be more towing capable then a large displacement v-8.
I love my diesel and it pulls great but I can't justify the expense anymore.
Thanks,
Philip

RE: Need More Towing Power for GMC 5.3L

A few years ago I was in the exact same situation. I had bought a 05 Chevy with the 5.3L auto with towing package (3.73's trans cooler). Pulling a 21ft toyhauler. Same problem, no power for hills or windy conditions.
I mulled the problem over for awhile and went a different route, diesel power. But if I had not gone diesel I would have bought a used 6.0L Chevy engine and replaced my 5.3L.
The only performance enhancement I felt that was worth the money was headers. The rest was a waste of money. The 6.0L conversion would be pricey but worth it in h.p. and torque. Plus their are more performance items available (heads, cams, etc).
I wasn't in the position either to buy a new truck but I did anyway. Don't have any regrets at all. In this market I'd think you'd be able to get a new or used diesel truck for a good price if you don't want to go hop up your 5.3L.
Just remember whatever you do you'll still have a 5.3L after all that money spent.

RE: So Cal Summer camping spots

Just came back from from Glass Creek campground between Mammoth Lakes and June Lake. We spent six days camping next to a burbling creek and beautiful pine trees. No reservations and no camping fees. Pit toilets if needed.
The family and I have been visiting the Mammoth area for ten years now and still love it.
PM me if you need more info.

Most trails are scenic. The trail to Casto canyon has some rocky sections, my 14 yr old did it on her quad so it wasn't too hard.
