RE: Where to buy propane on this route

Second Flying J's. they have separate RV lanes, propane fill, dump station (paid service), water (I only used for dumping, and air. If no Flying J then call ahead to RV dealers.

RE: Washington I-5 catastrophe......

I'm thinking a sacrificial I-Beam about a hundred yards before the bridge would prevent stuff like this, at least for height. Seems scary that a truck can hit one section and down comes the bridge

RE: Taking advantage of the stupid!

Dave Ramsey preaches to never buy new because you lose so much when you drive it home and Clark Howard says if you do buy new, never finance more than forty two months so you stay ahead of the depreciation curve.

RE: Help with gun selection

We are going to buy a .22 pistol this weekend so she can get used to that, then advance up to my .380. Which she will qualify with. It's up to her but for now she is saying she doesn't feel comfortable carrying a pistol but I think she might change her mind after she shoots the .22

RE: Help with gun selection

The CHL is required by her department no matter what type of gun she carries. I assume they just want their employees to go through some training. They aren't peace officers so they fall into a different category. As far as alligators, she hasn't encountered one yet but has seen them from a distance and had one co-worker walk up on one that was four feet right by a drainage ditch. She has encountered snakes and yes can typically back up and go around. Hogs are out during the day and has run into them although she can usually hear them a ways off. She does carry bear spray but not really sure how effective it will be. As far as wading in the water, it depends on the rice field and time of grow cycle, the field could be drained and dry or have water standing from your ankles to knee, which is typical or as high as her chest on one occasion. As far as I know, Texas open container law does not allow anyone in a car to have an open container unless its a taxi, limo or charter bus.

RE: Did You Serve ?

I am 43 and tried but was turned down due to medical issues. This was back in 1988 and nothing was really going on so I wonder if I would have been excepted if it was post 9/11. While I didn't get to serve, my great grand father was the ambassador to South Africa in the early 1950's and his son (my granddad) was a gunner in a B-24 or B-25 in WW-II, my other grand father was in the Army in WW-II, my dad was in the National Guard, my step dad was in the Marine Corp during WW-II and my father inlaw was on a crew in Korea that shot the 105mm Holitzer. I have two step brothers that served the Marine Corp in the late 1970's, several uncles that served in Korea and Vietnam, brother inlaw that served in the Navy and his son who was in the Army who was in a group that protected the high end Pentagon officials (like the secret service for the president). I wish I could have served. I wanted to be in either the Navy or Air Force and work on electronic systems on the planes but it wasn't meant to be.

RE: Help with gun selection

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. It's been really helpful. Not sure what direction we will go but it is up to her as to what she really feels comfortable with. Today while at Academy I saw a rifle with what looked like a revolver cylinder. Sure enough it was. Basically a Judge in rifle form. Will shoot a 410 or Colt 45. She liked the small size and weight of it. We may go rent one next weekend and shoot it. I also found a blog today about the Smith & Wesson Governor which was very helpful. The replies at the bottom of the page were especially helpful. Smith & Wesson Governor

Help with gun selection

My wife works for the state as an agricultural inspector and every summer they have to put on hip waders and walk through the water filled rice farms for inspection. In the past they were not allowed to carry a firearm however the state has changed their mind because of the many complaints the employees have filed encountering alligators, snakes and wild hogs. Each employee will have to take a CHL class and pass it in order to carry a gun in the state vehicle. They fall under a different category than an actual peace officer. My wife and I both plan to take the CHL class and start shooting on a monthly basis for practice and possibly even join a shooting club. To start with she doesn't feel comfortable carrying a pistol and suggested a .22 rifle however she would need to be a really good shot to hit a snake so I suggested s 410 shotgun but then I wondered if it was enough to take care of the hogs and alligators. Smith and Wesson makes the Governor which is a six shot revolver that can shoot 410, .45 ACP and .45 Colt rounds. You can alternate the 410 and 45 rounds which seems like a good choice but its a pistol. I think when we start shooting she will be ok with a pistol but that's yet to be determined. So which is a better choice? The .22 rifle, 410 shotgun, Governor pistol or something completely different?

RE: Interesting and the good news just keeps on coming

I'm surprised Houston didn't make the list. The energy sector is booming, housing didn't dive like the rest of the country and what little it did dip is coming back with housing sales up, new construction up and the time it takes to sell a house is low. We already have the largest medical complex on earth and its expanding even more including building satellite hospitals in the suburbs.

RE: CSCOPE

I got that, I was hoping to get some first hand experience from some of the parents and their thoughts, views and concerns. They have had some questionable lesson plans that when protested have been removed, or so they claim but we don't have access as of yet. The idea that the teachers aren't allowed to talk to us about it or try can be terminated is alarming at best.

CSCOPE

We have a pretty big school district covering four or five cities and the school has adopted CSCOPE a couple years back. It as implemented in a couple schools a year or two back and will now roll out to all the schools in the next school year or two. The main high school doesn't have it yet but will soon and the parents aren't pleased at all. At a local school board meeting it was standing room only and the time went well past the scheduled time. Someone, not sure who, decided to organize a big meeting at the civic center and invited CSCOPE members and the school board so we could get some questions answered. They invited a couple people to speak, one included an educator from a different part of the sate and a board member of the Texas Board Of Education. None of the CSCOPE folks or the school board showed up so a lot of questions went un-answered. We have tried to talk to some of the teachers but they said they couldn't talk about it and if they did they could be terminated. I am try into find out more about this. Has your school adopted the CSCOPE plans and how do you feel about them? Good or bad?

RE: Sirius XM Subscribers Beware!!!

I have life time with Sirus and I can transfer it. I was told I could transfer it five times before the account locked but suddenly after the merger it was three times and I've already used all three so when my car dies that's it.

401k or 457

My wife works for the State of Texas and they offer both a 401k and a 457. According to Wikipedia they are basically the same except you can withdraw the 457 before age 59.5 with out an early 10% penalty. Can anyone shed a little light on what would be a better option or should we fund both?

RE: M/C or VISA Gift Card HELP

I bought my daughter an AmEx card and I ended up taking it away from her and will just open a bank account with a Visa Debit. She had all sorts of problems using it because the card had no name, I'm talking about her buying stuff online. There was an option for her to get a card in her name but she ran into problems with that too so I got frustrated and took it away and will go a different route oh and the fees are high, some are worse than others so look around. If you want to give a gift card, buy the store card itself. For us we buy them from Krogers. Kroger offers points for card purchases and that gives you discounts on fuel purchases. They will usually give you double the face value in points so if the card is $100 they give you 200 points or $.20 cents off a gallon of gas up to thirty five gallons. Right now Kroger is running a special where they quadruple the points so that $100 gift card gets you 400 points or $.40 cents off gas. We buy cards every week to restaurants and stores we already go to so we save a lot on gas. I know Giant Eagle and Kroger do this, I'm sure others do too.

RE: Adding lights to a home shower

She hired a general contractor who subbed the electrical out so they referred me to him and I got no answer. As far as a permit my mom doesn't know if they pulled one. She, in good faith trusted the contractor because he has been in business fifty years here in town. For now I went to Home Depot and found the correct glass cover plate with foam gasket so it's at least sealed up for now while I try to figure out what the code is.

Adding lights to a home shower

My mom recently had her bathroom remodeled and put in a large walk in shower. The contractor added a 120 vac light directly above the shower and the bulb is not in a seal enclosure, the fixture is simply a recessed light can with a flood light. I was under the impression the light assembly would need to be a 12 volt dc or at the very least a 120 vac light in a sealed light enclosure. To me the steam could break the light and expose the 120 volts in a wet environment. Any ideas?

RE: Help me buy a tow dolly

Ok I'm lost. What are they talking about the pivot point? In the past I remember seeing a dolly that looked like the part the front tires sat on pivoted, while the Roadmaster I saw this weekend had a big bolt right in the center that looks like it pivots. Ok I'm sure there needs to be some play or some, thing would ware out, I'm guessing your tires or front end components, is that correct? The Acme Dolly looks pretty cool but one guy said the pivot point is the car tires the self and you must leave the steering column unlocked which means leave the key on. How does that work? Run the battery down or disconnect it? That seems like a pain. What am I not understanding?

RE: Help me buy a tow dolly

We plan to tow the VW Jetta, possibly my mother in laws Honda CRV and an older two door Jeep that we haven't bought yet. Wife has wanted one for years so I'm doing that for her this year but I understand those can be towed four down with some modification. Oh and my Jetta can't be towed four down. As far as the brakes go, I don't mind buying a brake booster for the motorhome, I just didn't know if one system was better than the other.
