RE: Need vehicle permit advice....

I agree get your permits where you cross, we will be crossing at Lukville on the 27th and will get all oour permits a little south of the border. It only took a little over an hour last winter for us and our friends to get our paper work there. You can get your tourist permit also there, one stop shopping! As far as the vehicles being in different names I think that has changed? Both my vehicles, RV and Jeep are in my name and I had no problem getting permits for them last year. Maybe some one else can verify that.

RE: Vigilantes rule the streets, police stand by and watch

We drove to La Perula last winter and there were many RV's parked on the street adjacent to the RV parks. We spoke to the RV park manager and were told that some of these spots are "Prime" spots and that the same people return to use them over and over. All the RV parks were full when we visited down from Tenacatita. I could not believe all the RV's parked in the roads? I would be talking to the RV park manager, I believe the owner of that park does not live in La Perula, and find out why and who initiated this. In reference to Tenacatita there is a Free Beach there, well they call it Almost Free Beach and there has been some stories that they are going to close it down to RV's. Also people park their RV's along the dirt road that runs parallel to the ocean. Makes the road a one lane road. My advice, like many others here, is find a spot in an RV park in La Perula off the street or move to another town. I do not think you will find justice under these circumstances, especially in a small town like La Perula.

RE: Same Old Same old for the Aduaneros

I have been through the declare lane when I was in Los Algodons with the upholster and the owner of the body shop in their pickups. When they went into Yuma to purchase items they would go through the declare lane on return. they would tell the aduanero what they had and show a receipt of purchase. They would have to pay duty on these items. What both these men did was wrap the mordida up with the receipt of items with half of what they thought the duty would be. The aduanero glanced at the money put it in his pocket, started a conversation then asked how much was in his pocket. handed back the receipts and waved us through. These were items in the back of the pickup easily seen by the aduanero. This was business as usual for them. Now this was last April and since then they have rotated out the aduaneros, but pretty sure this is still going on.

RE: Loss of Farmland to Mexico!

Moisheh, You are pretty much right on target with poverty and education in Mexico. I have seen this for over 50 years and can say that poverty in Mexico has not decreased in that time. Yes there are more middle class than there were 50 years ago but has not kept up with the population growth . There are peasants living in dirt floor dwellings all over Mexico, it is not limited to Baja or Kino! I have traveled the back roads of Mexico visiting relatives in ranchos that have no electricity to this day. They have small generators they run when needed. The main source of energy is propane. My family comes from these roots. I never experienced this type of poverty myself but my parents did. The people of Mexico that are in this poverty situation look to the U.S. as a way out. They come here to better themselves. My parents did over 75 years ago. I have many Mexican friends here, I am part of the Mexican community and most of my Hispanic friends feel the same way I do about Mexico. Some Mexicans without papers are returning, I do not know of any that are legal that are running to Mexico looking for work. Many tourists who visit Mexico do not see the homes where the RV park gardener lives, the fisherman's home, field worker, albanil and his helpers shacks. My take on education in Mexico is it takes money. The families I speak of that I know living in poverty want their kids to go to school, but usually they go only a short time until they are of age that they are needed on the farm or to work elsewhere. Again it may be different in big cities, but I know this to be the way in rural Mexico. I do not have any statistics to back this up, this is just my opinion based on my observations.

RE: Topic Regarding Mexico Frontier Zone US Vehicle Insurance

Alfredmay, I would suggest you purchase Mexican liability insurance. You can purchase a one year policy for under $100.00 from Vagabundos Del Mar. It is called the Drivers license policy. It will cover you for any vehicle you drive in Mexico, since you will have comp/collision on the frontera, this is all you will need. Others may offer this policy but this is the least expensive I have found it. All it will take is one fender bender and you will wish you had it. Good Luck Chuck

RE: auto insurance

For us that have insurance that covers comp and collision in Mexico, all we need is Mexican liability. I purchase what they call Drivers License Liability, it covers ANY vehicle driven by me in Mexico. In this case I have only one policy for my RV and toad. I purchase ours through Vagabundos for under $100.00 a year.

RE: Need a Sprinter windshield in Maz or PV

Last winter I had my windshield cracked by a rock thrown by a passing van. It was near Mazatlan. I went to the next booth to make a claim and after paper work and waiting about an hour the claims adjuster informed me that only covered when and if it happens in sections of the carretera that are under construction. Hopefully because it was a pipe off another vehicle they will pay. Just drive it to the booth before you replace it or I am almost sure you will not be reimbursed. Have your toll receipt with you. good luck and let us know of the outcome. Chuck

RE: Anyone driving RV to Mexico around 12-15-09

In my opinion it is easier to cross at Lukeville than Nogales. To get your tourist permit and vehicle permits you will get those about 20 30 miles out of town on the 2. Not sure of the kilometer marker but someone else here can give you that. Just make some copies of your drivers license, registrations, and passports they don't ask about insurance. Us and our friends last year were only there about an hour, quick and easy. Check out Turtle Toads sticky on border crossings lots of info. Gonna have to invite me for a game of horseshoes. Have fun see ya down there! Chuck

RE: Guns in Mexico

In answer to the OP we use our dogs as a deterrent, obviously works for petty theft or vandalism but if we encounter a gun toting criminal the dogs won't be much good. No gun toting Bandito encounter yet, just military and cops after too many years to count. We carry pepper spray but carry for use on stray dogs that might attack our dogs on walks, never had to use yet. Used to take guns to Baja for hunting purposes but that hasn't happened in 40 years. Even then we had to sneak them across, but wouldn't try that now.

RE: Anyone driving RV to Mexico around 12-15-09

There is a state park at the border we have stayed at, Organ Pipe Cactus I think, you can see Mexico from there very nice place and can cross when the border opens.

RE: RV Retirement in Mexico

I too believe that just being in Mexico you are supporting their economy. Buying your fuel there helps with the local economy. As far as negotiating prices there has always been a two price system in Mexico, one for the tourists and one for the locals. In fact one could say in some tourists spots where a cruise ship comes in there could be three price system. I have seen prices go up on cruise ship days. I see nothing wrong with negotiating. I try to pay the local prices. I do not try to barter with the poor, if I want what they are selling I pay their asking price, because they need it more than I do.

RE: Tires and RV's in Mexico

I carry an old 22.5, (no rim) strapped on the front bumper of our Jeep, looks weird, have had lots of comments, but if ever I need to have a change out I have heard I will not find that size tire in Mexico very easily. I just replaced the rear tires because of age, still had lots of tread but did not want to have any problems in Mexico. I also have the Tire Pro system which I recommend to every one.

RE: Beware of Pemex 3811 a few miles south of Santa Ana

I have been traveling to Mexico for almost 60 Years now, of course the formative years were with my parents. I can remember even back then the caution at the fuel stations in Mexico. I have not to this day to my knowledge been ripped off by an attendant. Why because I instill much caution when purchasing fuel there, and speaking fluent Spanish helps. If the pumps were off and I didn't catch it, that's possible. As far as the U.S. and Canada I have never had any second thoughts about an attendant ripping us off. Could the pumps have been off, maybe. I appreciate the members that post there experiences here even if they are negative to Mexico, it helps keep us on our toes! I know that those negative posts offend a couple of members but why always defend with the U.S. is worse or it happens elsewhere all the time, this forum is about traveling south and one should not take these posts personally, we all don't agree with our perceptions of Mexico, but should not take offense and always go on the defense. Counting the days to leave for our 3 months in Mexico

RE: Not receiving most HD channels, help!

According to a tech I spoke with today sat 129 is not showing up so it has to be in the cable or dish is off. I guess I need to call a tech out after checking all cable connections.

RE: Not receiving most HD channels, help!

i wish it would have been that simple. It has 3 LNB's, When one does a check switch should the 129 come up? and is the dish system the 500 or super? should tuner input be on 2 or 1 or does it matter? thanks!
