RE: Arizona state parks--how to get a campsite?

We stay in California and Arizona State Parks in February and March. Usually there is no trouble finding a spot in an Arizona park at the beginning of the week as most parks gradually fill up as the weekend approaches. We've found the best time to arrive is Sunday afternoon as the weekend crowd heads for home. Of course, if you want to be in one of the more popular parks during spring break...well, then all bets are off. Our experience has been, you don't want to be in one of those parks during spring break anyway. Now, California parks are another story. Many parks are booked solid with reservations most weekends so if you do enter a park during the week, you likely will have to leave on Friday. karl

RE: Leaks and Vents

rufcut wrote: Sounds like a leaky fiberglass hitop on the B. The only real cure is lifting up the roof and resealing. Feel the window pillar fabric to see if it's wet. Thats where mine leaked. If this Xplorer is like I think it is, you're never going to be able lift off the roof. The whole backend of the RV and the roof are all one piece. karl karl

RE: Leaks and Vents

My Xplorer has a range hood over the stove. Is water getting in through the vent? Also, there is a lot going on in the area below the windshield. Usually that is the entry point for the air that enters the van. Also, the well below the window usually contains the windshield wiper motor and it's linkage. I've seen the drain holes in this area plug up and cause problems. Might be a good idea to flood the area with a hose and see if it drains properly. And I've also had a windshield seal go bad and cause leaks around the firewall. Good luck. You need "the gift" to find and fix water leaks. karl

RE: Any photos of the NEW Roadtrek SS Ideal?

Gene: I was thinking in the line of wanting to pull into a Walmart for a couple hours of shuteye and having to contend with getting some bikes or a carrier out of the way before deploying the slide. And with the slide emerging from the open rear doors as shown, it sure doesn't look like you're just parking. I can just see this happening. "Gee Honey, I just ran the slide out and forgot the bikes were back there". However, I agree....it would probably work fine in a campground setting. karl

And what happens if you want to use a receiver mounted cargo box or bike rank. karl

RE: advise about buying small motorhome

I wouldn't go near a Renault powered LaSharo. Those things never were reliable even when they were new. Just imagine how it would be to have to find parts for that turkey. Even when they were under warranty, it seemed a lot of them were off the road waiting for parts. The transmissions especially were prone to failure. You notice on the eBay listing, there is a lot of flowery prose about how wonderful it is to drive a small RV, and othing about the condition of the thing or any mention of it's reliability. Best to stay away from the baby. karl

RE: collective wisdom on price

Dan: You might try downloading and running CraigsPalFree. It will search the Craigslists all over the country and you can get a pretty good idea what other people are asking I did a search on 2002 Roadtrek and got five hits, all between 24 and 30k. And, I've found that NADA often seems to be low. karl

RE: VW van conversion, no shower:tip about using a solar shower?

I've found the water in a sun shower to be too hot to be used right out of the bag. I dump half of it in a 2 1/2 gal bucket, mix it with cool water, drop a bilge pump in the bucket and with a foot operated switch, pump to a hand held shower head. 2 1/2 gallons of water seems to be plenty for a good shower. And yes, using a sun shower is not permitted in most National Parks. karl

RE: Tires for Roadtrek 210

Jim Handbasket wrote: "Consider the Bridgestone V-Steels (OEM GM on the Tiger), or whatever you've had on it if satisfactory". Amen brother. I've never been able to wear out a set of Michelins. They always zippered and separated from the caseing leaving those aligators you see along the side of the road. I've run Bridgestones for the last 12 years with good results, the last 5 with the V-Steels. The sidewalls don't seem to checker like the Michelins, either. karl

RE: Replacing carpet in a 1996 RT

I just bought some 1/2" dense foam mats. They are 2' x 2' with interlocking edges and have an easy to clean pebble surface. You can pull them out and hose them off if need be. With interlocking edges.... sort of like putting together a puzzle. Should provide some insulation also. Can't wait to put them in and give them a try. Stay tuned for a product evaluation. Got them at greatmats.com. karl

RE: DC Outlet in Coach?

I have 5 DC outlets scattered throughout the coach powered off the house battery. A couple are for the TV. One is on a 30 amp circuit so I can run 110 volt power tools off an inverter. Another is in an outside compartment for topping up the air shocks with a 12 volt compressor. And finally, one is mounted outside on the curb side so I can plug in a fluorescent light for reading outside at night. We use all of them quite a bit. karl

RE: Anyone had this leak problem?

chainegang wrote:I've been following ClassBinVA's leak problem thinking someone else with an xplorer would give the poster the actual fix. Since that has not happened I'll share my experiance with an 89 Xplorer that had the exact same problem in the same general area. So here goes Well, it's good to see someone has been down this road before and has a definite fix for the problem. Of course, it would have been nice if he had come forward on 2/5 when the post was first made so the rest of us wouldn't have had to get a brain charleyhorse trying to come up with a solution. Maybe chainegane enjoyed seeing us floundering around. karl

RE: Anyone had this leak problem?

ClassBinVA wrote: That is correct it's an 87 Xplorer 228. No back door, with a drop floor and a fiberglass roof. A little tight for a 6 foot guy like myself back in the bath/bed area, but she runs like a champ and gets a lot of inquiries when we're out driving and/or camping. ClassBinVA: We have an 89 230XL and I believe the construction is similar where they cut the top and back off the van and replace it with a one piece fiberglass sandwiched section separated by an inch if foam insulation. I think you are on the right track in locating the leak. I doubt if it is leaking at the vertical joint where the fiberglass is attached to the van body as this point is several inches back from the closet wall. My guess would be that the drip rail might be worth inspection. The rail (on my rig, at least) seems to be attached with pop rivets and covered with a generous amount of caulk sealant. Water can be getting in through the holes in the pop rivets and running down the wall cavity. You may have to remove the panel in the back wall of the closet to give it a good look see. The drip rail also covers the attachment joint between the top and van wall. The seal at that point may have failed. Good luck. karl

RE: Anyone had this leak problem?

ClassBinVA: Judging from your profile picture, you seem to have the low profile, drop floor model Xplorer. I don't think it has a rear door. Is that correct? karl

RE: RT 190P TrippLite charger humming

I suspect you have a transformer in the device and that's what is vibrating. Most transformers are wound around a metal core which sometimes consists of laminated plates. It could be that these plates have shifted with the cold weather and are causing the hum and may disappear when the weather warms up. Also it might be a good idea to make sure the charger enclosure isn't vibrating against it's mounting surface and using that as a sound board. Maybe a foam pad between the charger and it's mounting surface would help. karl
