RE: AC problem, experts please read

In addition to wa8yxm comment - the same drip pan hole can get clogged with "crud" and your solution might be as simple unplugging the blockage.

RE: Battery Isolator vs solenoid?

I also vote for the old fashioned solenoid isolator - inexpensive, readily available, easy to install, and no diode issues.

RE: Broken water heater plug-help

My 02
Pretty common to break off the plastic plugs that are required on Atwood water heaters.
Some have had luck by using a "riser removal tool" that is a common item sold in most hardware store which is used to remove the risers within an automatic sprinkler system. Some heat up a screwdriver an try and jam it in and screw it out. In my case neither of those methods works and I ended up using a small propane/butane torch and just melted the remains.
In the future - just change out the plug every year (it's the old ones that break off)- the replacements don't' cost squat and it will save you heartburn in the future.

RE: steps won't come down

When I had similar issues I discovered that one of my coach batteries had a problem - step operated erratically. Most places will test your batteries for free so you might consider having them tested.

RE: AC on low or keep it on high???

May depend on the type of unit you have. My older AC unit does not have a freeze sensor and while I suspect "high" fan speed helps there is no doubt that I will have freeze issues if I am not careful about the temp setting in the rig.

RE: A/C Questions

If the coils are clean - then remove the interior shroud and test the temperature of the air inflow/outflow - if its not close to 20 degree differential then you probably have a low coolant. I suspect many would argue that the cost of repairing a low coolant issue in an 81 AC unit doesn't make much sense and you should consider replacing.

RE: Battery wires

My 02
Consider taking a pic of your current wiring ... over the yrs I have noted that some of the local battery outfits aren't all that great about replacing all the wiring when you get a new battery. In my case I have some wires attached to the negative terminal and some connected to the positive terminals.
You may be able to figure out which wire goes to which "gadget" by simply disconnecting the wire and then determining which gadget isn't working. I suspect your electric step and propane detector are probably included in the "gadget" list.

RE: A/C Lock-Up......

Not sure .. but it might be as simple as replacing a fan capacitor which probably cost less than $10.

RE: Dometic fridge help

My 02
Leave the fridge door closed and wait 24 hrs and see if the fridge is cold.
Pretty common for older fridges to have serious problems -- when they are run "off balance" the coolant which normally circulates tends to "cook" and create blockages which retards/stops the cooling process. If your fridge is warm and your the pipes in the back are hot then chances are you have a blockage issue.
In some cases people will drive the RV around and hope that the movement will unblock the fridge. In some cases people will remove the fridge and put it on its side/upside down in hopes that it will remove the blockage. Suspect most would consider both "cures" as temporary - even if they work.
Purchasing a new cooling unit costs less than a new fridge - but given the age of the unit (30 yrs +) I would probably go with a new fridge.

RE: dead engine battery when at campground for a long time

Trik L Start should resolve your problem (assuming your hooked up to shore power). Its a device which you permanently install in your rig which overrides the the std battery isolator and allows charging of your chassis battery when it senses that your converter is charging your coach battery. About $50 as I recall.

RE: What's the coldest temps you've RV'ed in?

I don't like cold camping - but sometimes you get a surprise and I suspect we have camped in several places that have gotten into the teens. In hindsight the coldest camping I ever did was when I took my brother and his wife to the Oregon Coast - probably only got down to 35 degrees but he's one of those guys who can't sleep unless all the windows/vents are open and he even brings his own fan. Froze my buns off.

When you figure out the problem please let us know the solution. Seems like I read a similar thread about once a month so its apparently a common problem - just don't recall anyone posting a solution which the OP verified worked.

RE: hard time starting AC

My 02
Cleaning both the condenser and evaporator coils will take some of the load off of the compressor and make your AC more efficient. Should be plenty of posts on how to do that cleaning (use the search feature on this forum).
As compressors get older they often become harder to start - many purchase a "hard start capacitor" which basically gives the compressor a Boost when it tries to start - they don't cost much (about $20) and many on this forum use a Supco SPP6 - easy Google search. When I added a Supco to my 91 Coleman AC I also replaced the other capacitors while I was up there - total cost for the Hard Start and other capacitors was about $40 as I recall.
Hope this helps - good luck.

RE: Replacing Water Pump

Replacing a water pump is normally no big deal - even the RV outlets don't charge much. If your water pressure is dropping you might consider removing the inlet filter - its a metal screen that catching stuff and if it's clogged then your water pressure is going to drop and the pump may stop working. Worth a look.

RE: Do you wash your roof

I am one of the "wash" guys when it comes to a roof. I have a rubber roof in Oregon which will tend to get pretty nasty if it doesn't get scrubbed down once a yr - on the bright side I suspect it would be very clean except for the fact that the rig is parked next to several large fir trees which tend to rain down a constant load of "stuff".
For those who want to maintain their roof - a couple of tips. I have found that lightly scrubbing the rubber roof with thick athletic sock containing a bar of lava soap inside is a pretty good method of eliminating "crud/stains" without damaging the roof - putting a UV protector on may help as well.
I have a 91 Class C and have no roof issues.

RE: Fridges and condensation

Many on this forum use a 12v hard drive fan attached to the cooling fins in the RV fridge - some buy from a guy who sells a "package" on ebay which includes the fan, wiring and instructions - some save money and buy the fan from a computer outlet and DIY. These fans don't require batteries and put out more air volume than the std battery fans sold at RV outlets.
Would you by chance have a link to the E-Bay site for the fans?
Thanks.:@Pretty sure this is the appropriate link. Hope it helps.

RE: Moving to SoCal with a Class A, worth the hassle?

I am considering a very good job in SoCal, Orange county, and I'm looking into is it worth it to move there to live in my 38" Alfa diesel class A, 2004.
A "very good job" is a rare commodity these days - you can buy an RV anytime.
