RE: Truck camper bed area circulating fans (install with photos)

Hey Bruce! As always a great idea and professional installation. Don't you just love the feeling you get right before a bit, blade, knife, saw, etc. bites into your perfectly fine wall, floor, ceiling, etc. Makes the blood just pump through the old veins! Thanks for the post and pictures. Happy winter camping, Dave.

RE: niknas inspired ladder mount bike rack mod

The flaw for me would be taking the front wheels off & putting them back on. You probably have those quick disconect thinga-ma-jiggies.Our bikes have 1/2" nuts & it's a pain to get the tire thru the brake pads. You are so right. Our bikes have the quick disconnects but I have to get the wrench out for my daughters bike. When she gets a little older she'll have a bike with the Q/D's. Dave.

RE: N GA & SC - NOV trip to meet Kohldad

Great trip report and beautiful pictures. Been to several of the places you visited. Never been to Vogel, though it's on the list.
If you ever head back into GA and the state parks I highly recommend getting a Friends of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites pass. It give you two free nights of camping in any of the state parks and two passes on the Sam Shortline Excursion Train out of Georgia Veterans state park. Plus you don’t have to pay the daily ($5) visitor pass per day fee.
Over Thanksgiving weekend we purchased our 3rd yearly pass and it paid for itself immediately. The family pass cost is $70. We used our two free nights ($50) and we stayed in the park for 4 nights ($5 per day visitor pass: total $20)
Did I mention that you get a 10% discount on any overnight stay? That means we actually saved $5 (2 nights at $25 a night).
Thanks again for the trip report.
Happy camping, Dave.

RE: niknas inspired ladder mount bike rack mod

"Any concern about that aluminum ladder fatiguing (and ultimately failing) from the load & constant flexing/vibration while driving ? ? ?"
I have have traveled thousands of mile including two trips down Baja One without any sign of "ladder fatigue". Of course every camper is built different.
NikI agree. I put over 2800 miles this summer without problem. But of course I will keep an eye on it.
Thanks again niknas, for the great idea.

RE: quick trip report - High Falls SP over Thanksgiving weekend

Great trip report, several Deja vu photos :)
Max looks like he has taken to camping rather well.
I hope Max has a dog house big enough to share, you know, after Kim sees the photos you chose to post :EYou know if you ever get one you've a place to stay in the south. Of course, you've a place to stay either way.
Do they still have the masses of wild cats? The last time we were there we brought home 3 kittens. We decided not to go back...We didn't see a single kitten so I would have to say "No". In fact, in the 4 times I've been there I've never seen any cats roaming around.
Thanks for a great trip report. High Falls SP is now on my list to visit as I traverse GA in the spring.Don't forget we have a rally to plan!
Happy camping, Dave.

quick trip report - High Falls SP over Thanksgiving weekend

High Falls SP – Jackson, GA – 11/25/2009 thru 11/29/2009
Participants: Dave, Kim, Ashley, Maddie (was delivered Saturday afternoon), Gary, Laurie, Stevie, Dylan, Scott, Beth, Christian, Cameron, Paul, Allison, Brittany
Campground Rating: 4 (out of 5)
Rating reasons / About the campground: sparse camp store but did have shop n' rob right across the road, nice hiking trails next to falls downstream of the dam, pretty lake (horsepower restricted to 10 HP), upper campground is now open (has 6-7 yurts on lakefront campsites – in this part of the cg there are only about 17 sites and they are spaced a little further apart than in river campground), nice well maintained moderate hiking trails (the trails beside the falls are pretty)
Campsite number: 109
About our trip: We went down after work on Wednesday and got a nice site. The rest of the crew came down Thursday morning (I was worried that they wouldn’t be able to get 3 sites next to each other but it worked out perfectly). Did a lot of overeating. Went on a few nice hikes. The weather was very nice. Mild even if it was a little breezy most of the time. Sunday was gorgeous (of course!) Took out Kim’s uncle’s pontoon boat for a ride on Saturday. All in all, had a good time.

RE: niknas inspired ladder mount bike rack mod

Looks good, and I need to carry 3 mikes as well....BUT you covered your brake light?Actually that's not the flaw I was talking about. That one, I knew about going in. There is plenty of blinker and brake light that gets through so I wasn't going to worry about that.
Looks like a very nice mod.
Looks like you covered the brake light AND the now the awning bracket is behind the bike rack.
Can you remove the bike rack to lower the awning?Bingo. That's the one I missed. I'll have to drill a few more holes (I’ll call them “engineered lightening holes” if asked) and move the whole assemly to the left about 2 inches.
It's not like I use that little "Truckin' Awn" that much anyway. It hardly does any good unless the rain is coming straight down without any breeze.
Is it difficult steering the bikes with no front tire??Not really. You just have to have good balance.:B
Dave.

niknas inspired ladder mount bike rack mod

I've used a ladder mount bike rack (the "J" hook kind) that I modified to carry 3 bikes for a while. It had plenty of strength to carry them but it was a pain in the backside to strap the bikes onto it then strap the front tires to the ladder to keep them from swinging.
So after seeing niknas reply to the Hauling Bicycles post I decided that I would try and do the same thing.
This mod is just an extension of his idea.
I used 1 1/4" x 1/2" aluminum bar, stainless steel u bolts the same ID as my ladder tubes (home depot), and Yakima "Blockhead" fork mount brackets:
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/luv2skyski/misc/ladder%20mount%20bike%20rack/yakimablockhead.jpg
I lowered and spaced out the middle bike mount so the handlebars would clear the outside bike frames. At this point her bike is smaller and fits in between our frames. I also inverted the outside Yakima brackets so those bike handles wouldn't interfer with each other.
Of course a picture is worth a 1000 words. So here they are:
Close ups of the upper mounting bars:
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/luv2skyski/misc/ladder%20mount%20bike%20rack/topforkmountbars.jpg
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/luv2skyski/misc/ladder%20mount%20bike%20rack/topforkmountbarsviewfromtop.jpg
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/luv2skyski/misc/ladder%20mount%20bike%20rack/topforkmountbarsfwdsideview2.jpg
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/luv2skyski/misc/ladder%20mount%20bike%20rack/topforkmountbarsfwdsideview.jpg
Close ups of the lower tire mounting angles:
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/luv2skyski/misc/ladder%20mount%20bike%20rack/tireangles.jpg
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/luv2skyski/misc/ladder%20mount%20bike%20rack/tireanglesprofile.jpg
Close ups of the forks mounted:
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/luv2skyski/misc/ladder%20mount%20bike%20rack/cuofforks.jpg
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/luv2skyski/misc/ladder%20mount%20bike%20rack/cuofforks1.jpg
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/luv2skyski/misc/ladder%20mount%20bike%20rack/3bikesmountedviewedfromtopofcamperc.jpg
And of course with all three bikes mounted:
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/luv2skyski/misc/ladder%20mount%20bike%20rack/3bikesmountedviewedfromtopofcamper.jpg
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/luv2skyski/misc/ladder%20mount%20bike%20rack/3bikesmounted.jpg
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p12/luv2skyski/misc/ladder%20mount%20bike%20rack/3bikesmountedangleview.jpg
Now I can take down any bike without having to take the others down also (as opposed to the dreaded "J" hook!). This past summer I hauled our bikes thousands of miles (literally) and it works great.
Now...can you spot the flaw in my design?
Happy camping, Dave.

Cadet heater RECALL

The other day I got an email from André Nanook (not sure whether he's a member of rv.net). He informed me of an apparently old recall on Cadet Heaters.
I don't know how many have these heaters installed in their campers. I got the idea from Netboy (I don't know if he monitors the forum any longer or not). Here is the pm that I sent him.
"Don't know if you're still watching rv.net or not. I received an email about the cadet heater we have installed in our campers. Seems there was a recall several years ago.
CPSC link
Cadet website link
Affected models were sold between 1982 and 1999. Luckily mine was manufactured in May 2006 so it doesn't apply to me but I'm not sure when you installed yours.
Thanks again for all the great ideas.
Dave."
Thought I'd just pass this on.
Happy camping, Dave.

There is a nice lake (10 HP restricted) where you can rent boats if needed. There are several relatively short hiking trails near the falls and river. There is also Dauset Trails which is a great nature trail area with lots of animals. I highly recommend going there if you're ever in the area.

Southern TC'ers heading out over Thanksgiving?

Anyone in the south heading out this weekend? We're going down to High Falls SP for the holiday (staying close to home). We have access to a pontoon boat while were there. Have some relatives coming down to visit on Turkey day. Weather is supposed to be nice (cool but nice). For you tundra dwellers that means:
High / Low (°F) Precip. %
Today Nov 23 Cloudy 54°/45° 20 %
Tue Nov 24 AM Clouds / PM Sun 62°/47° 20 %
Wed Nov 25 AM Clouds / PM Sun 64°/42° 10 %
Thu Nov 26 Sunny 58°/37° 0 %
Fri Nov 27 Partly Cloudy 50°/35° 20 %
Sat Nov 28 Sunny 56°/35° 0 %
Sun Nov 29 Sunny 58°/38° 0 %
Did you notice that the lows are almost going to hit FREEZING!! I gotta tell ya I'm not ready for winter.:B
For those who might be interested...As of this post there is still 3 sites available in the Lake CG (The reservation system restricts the length to 25' so it's perfect for us).
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

RE: Trip Report - Devil's Fork State Park, SC

Nice to see a trip report from the South. That looks like a great CG. I'll definately have to put in on the list. I love to go hiking when we are camping. Especially in the fall.
Is that lake HP restricted? Judging by the large boat ramp and pictures of the boat being launched I'd have to assume no.
After dinner, it was time to sit by the fire and catch up on things.
