RE: Onan 5500 wont stay running?

Update and solution. With help from KG I ran through a bunch of possible problems but didn't find anything wrong. I called a local repair shop and he came out and ran it through a diagnostic test and found no output. We thought it was the regulator. He pulled it out and took the cover off the generator and found one of the wires had not been crimped into the connector. We stripped the wire back, added a new connector and crimped it down. Re-installed and it fired up and ran great. $75 for the house call that I happily paid, would have cost me 4 hours and almost that much in fuel to haul it in and bring it back home.

RE: Onan 5500 wont stay running?

Got your PM KG, Thank You.
Thanks for the heads up Texas, it seems the smaller the part the farther they fly, and the more important they are the harder they hide

RE: Onan 5500 wont stay running?

I discovered that the fix was a simple one...I only needed a vented gas cap.
Doc I'll try that, it's a toy hauler so the tank gets filled and used quite often. Still an easy fix that's worth a try.
it's not hard to replace the controller on your model the controller and regulator are made together.
Thanks KG, I've had the switch cover off looking for a loose wire so I'm familiar with the insides. If it's as easy as you say I may just pull it out myself and see if I can get Onan to send me the part. If I can fix it myself I can save us both the $ and hassle of hauling it in for repairs, the closest service center is about an hour away.
Would my generator be one with possible brush problems?

RE: Onan 5500 wont stay running?

open the cover and look to the left and unplug the remote wires
I'll take a look at that and give that a try. I'm going to pull the fuel solenoid as Brodie suggested as see if it's gummed up, I doubt it's the problem as it's always had Sta-Bil, but it's one more thing I can try before taking it in. The FlightSystems guide says the regulator and controllers on this model are buried and require special tools, so I'm almost done with what I can do.
"Nothing ruins a generator faster that not running it, and exercising it with a load on it."
"But a generator with only 3.5 hours on it, sounds more like it has been neglected."
And nothing ruins a forum post faster than someone thinking their opinion contributes to the solution. I really don't see how this is neglect or what 3.5 hours of run time has to do with what appears to be an electrical or electronic failure. It sat for at least a year before I took possession of it, no fuel, no use, sounds like I bought a neglected new generator

RE: Onan 5500 wont stay running?

I thought a 2007, that's the year of the coach, Purchased New June 2008. I suppose it could be 2005, 2006, or 2007, there is an emission sticker that covers 2005-2007, not sure where I'd find year information otherwise.
Model #5.5HGJAB Spec D
SerialEO700593XX
I started it and watched for the blinking lights but nothing happened. The Flight Systems trouble shooting guide mentioned that as well, along with some other good information and things to try. Tapped on the oil sending unit while running and that didn't do anything, even jumped it.

RE: I believe in engine brakes!

1.I find this post amusing.
I don't. A man starts a thread about his experience with a product, explains why he wanted it and the type of driving/towing he does. He's immediately told he's using the wrong gear, wasted his money, and doesn't need it.
Some of you must have slept past nap time in kindergarten, you missed some important lessons, like not saying anything unless have something nice to say.

I rechecked everything this am just to make sure I didn't miss something. Glad to hear that Onan has that kind of warranty, it has a whopping 3.5 hours on it so far.

If I felt the need this seems like a better option on your truck (or mine)

This is probably the direction I'm heading on this truck

RE: I believe in engine brakes!

I've had trucks with and without, my latest without, and I prefer with. I added a PacBrake to my 03 Duramax and could comfortably roll down most grades without service brakes. I could roll off the East side of Donner Summit without brakes. I sold that truck and the 06 Duramax I have now doesn't have a brake yet. Going over Donner is completely different, even with the Allison I still feel like I'm on the brakes too much to keep the engine speed down

RE: Onan 5500 wont stay running?

Thanks for the move.
Yes it's running, I can get rpm to increase by pulling on carb. Goes through the normal start up, crank twice before starting, light on switch comes on and as soon as I release it dies. It's just over a year old and I'm not sure if the dealer will do anything since it part of the Warrior family. Guess I'll call Onan and see if they can offer any assistance.
Steve the voltage regulator never crossed my mind, why do you suspect that?

Onan 5500 wont stay running?

I have a Onan 5500 in a Ragen 5th wheel. Since we dont use it often I run it from time to time to keep fuel and oil moving through it. I tried starting it the other day and the engine fires and runs but as soon as I release the starter switch it dies. Tried it at the interior panel as well as on the generator, same issue. Checked oil, all wiring and connections and I don't see anything wrong. I can hold the switch and it runs fine, (tried it for 10-15 seconds I know not good for the starter), but I wanted to make sure it ran. As soon as either switch is released it dies. Any ideas where to look?

RE: Second A/C in Rage'n Bedroom

I stumbled on this installation of a 2nd A/C in WW, should be pretty similar installation in your Ragen.

RE: Tire and Radiator Purchase Questions

Try ridenow.com for the radiator. I've had good luck with them on OEM Yamaha parts and their prices are very competitive. Unless there is some compelling reason, like doubling your horsepower, I'd stick to the OEM radiator

I installed a Pac PXRB on my 03 Duramax and it's one of the things I miss most when I sold it. Not a necessity but sure a nice to have option. I'll be putting another on as soon as I can

RE: Best online source for Toyos

BenK I looked at most of the sites, they either don't list them available or don't have pricing. Others don't have the M55.
MapGuy, Michelin would be an option but I don't see anything in the size I after.
Coolbreeze I considered that, probably save about $160. If I had any other reason to go up there I'd be heading North tomorrow.

RE: engine oil

What year is the truck? I had a V10 in a motorhome and it ran 0W/20. I just ordered oil for a friend with a V10 in a F250 and that called for 0W/20 or 5w/20. The usually list the recommended viscosity of the oil filler cap

Discount Tire is one option!
tried that too, the online response was:
"Sorry, Toyo Tires are not available in 255/85-16,
or are not currently carried in the Sacramento Area."

Best online source for Toyos

I've decided on Toyo M55's for my truck and I'm looking for a online source. The local stores are all quoting $2k plus for six of the 255-85-16 E rated tire mounted and balanced. I've found a number of online dealers but only a couple carrying the M55. Anyone have any recommendations?
