RE: Dec 27th air travel, a rant

My only grand kids live in NJ and we live in WA (not DC). If I had to drive to visit them, we might make it once a year. I fly three or four times instead. It isn't always pleasant but I get there in about six hours. I've learned some helpful techniques and I try to stay calm no matter what happens. I might not be so calm if some idiot tried to bring down the plane and I appreciate all that is done to make things safe.

Scam Alert

This afternoon I received a phone call from a guy claiming to represent a company called "Support on Click" which he said was a support provider to Microsoft Windows. He claimed there are various problems with Windows being infected with something. In 45 minutes his company could make our old computer function just like a new one. He was persistent but I resisted. I asked for the name of his company and their telephone number which he gave me. I told him if we were interested, my husband would call back. He sounded like he was Indian but he gave me a western name. I Googled the company after I got rid of the guy. It is a big scam that operates in various countries. My policy is NEVER to respond to a phone solicitation call. If I need something, I initiate the contact. We were on the "Do Not Call" list. Perhaps that has expired.

Winterize Everything!!

We have lived so long in the mild Puget Sound region that we really don't take winter seriously--just darker days with more wind and rain. I did get DH to winterize the PW this year even though he was questioning the need. I gave a sigh of relief when he finally drained it and put in some antifreeze. We then had some a seriously cold spell--not just freezing but well below freezing for about a week. I stayed inside, glad that I did not have to worry about the PW. Today I went out to get something out of the pantry. When I opened the pantry door, I could NOT believe the mess. There were six or so cans of Diet Coke that had exploded all over everything. The stuff leaked down the fabric wall, stained some of the wood and was certainly not what I wanted to deal with. The lesson learned is that I must clear everything out as part of the winterizing process.

RE: Year End Christmas Letters

I like to receive Christmas letters and I send out one each year. I do try to make mine interesting using a theme that applies to some part of the Christmas story. I have been told by several who receive my letter that they find them fun, meaningful and interesting. There is nothing more discouraging to me than to receive a signed card from people whom I hear from only at Christmas. I want to know how things are going, what they have been doing etc. None of this information comes from a printed card signed "Merry Christmas, Joe and Sally". Everyone is different and that makes life interesting.

Another Watch Out For

I was online searching for a cookie recipe since I have to bake 9 dozen cookies for a cookie exchange tomorrow. I found a site that was given for molasses cookies. As I read down, there was a large, centered spot for "Cell Phone Number". This had to be filled in before you could read the recipe. I have never run into this before. I scrolled down further and there, rather camouflaged because of color of printing on a colored background, was the info that this was a "pay for recipe" site and $9.99 would be charged monthly to my cell phone bill. Needless to say, I did not proceed further!

RE: Does an athlete endorsement influence what you buy?

NO WAY! What they do, they do for $$$$. I have grown cynical or wiser as I have grown older. I think about the athletes and their endorsements the way I think about movie "stars" and their political endorsements. Show me some valid credentials and I will consider your opinions.

RE: Allergies but not Allergic? ------ Vasomotor Rhinitis

I was diagnosed with this. My doc's advice was to treat as if it were an allergy with antihistamines. One of the best things I do for congestion is to use a neti pot. Mix 1/4 tsp of salt and baking soda in a cup of warm water. Wash out the nasal passages and sinuses. One of my problems is cold air. I can walk outside and develop an instant headache if the air is too cold. Finding the cause has helped me deal with the problem. I feel much better. We also have an electrostatic air filter on the furnace.

RE: Went back on my word tonight

When does helping out a financially irresponsible relative become enabling? If you accept her as she is, then I guess you bail her out as long as you have resources and want to be involved. If you want her to become more responsible, you set some limits and find a way to help that doesn't involve giving her money ie credit counseling, helping her set up a budget, an occasional bag of food or find a local food bank and refer it to her. This isn't easy--from experience, I know. But helping someone become financially secure/mature/responsible/accountable is the only real help! Suggest she find The Fly Lady on line. That woman offers free help for many of life's problems.

RE: Christmas rant

I, too, am involved in a cookie exchange. I love the people who want to do it so I will go along with the plan. However, rather than keep the cookies, I will take them to a shelter that helps the homeless. I am certain those people will enjoy some freshly-baked cookies. Giving is what the season is all about. It sure helps my spirits soar.

RE: Windshield wipers?

One of our wipers broke on a trip. We went to Napa and bought what they suggested. DH put the new ones on. As I remember, the new ones just snapped on. We have a Ford 350 PW.

RE: Beware of Starbucks giftcards

I frequent Starbucks stores wherever I happen to be. Their cards are out by the cash register and anyone can pick one up. They have to be activated by putting a certain amount of money on to them. I would want more info before coming down on Starbucks. After all the company is in the business of making money and that is done by making the customer happy and well caffeinated.

RE: Retired, may I ask your opinion

My observation of friends/relatives who have retired is that for about seven years they get along well. After that, inflation and expenses start to take their toll. My husband was offered early retirement when he was 59. He took it and has played around ever since. The only thing that makes our present life okay is that we have a small apartment rental in a very desirable location. Our health is good and we are able to manage and do many of the repairs on the rental ourselves. The rental value is essentially in the land. At some time, we will accept one of the many offers we receive for our building, but I don't want to outlive our resources. You situation sounds good because of your income producing property. After about six months of leisure, my husband needed something more meaningful to do and began doing volunteer work. You may discover that retirement will grow boring if that is all you have going on. Whatever you decide, good luck.

RE: American Express - costco card - NEW RULES

Makes me glad my Amex cash-back card isn't tied to Costco. This really has nothing to do with Costco per se. As I understand it, AmEx does not want their BUSINESS cards used for non-business expenses. There is an AmEx non-business card that can be used for whatever you want--where AmEx is accepted. I intend to switch to the non-business card soon. If I remember correctly, AmEx is the only credit card Costco accepts. I drop a chunk of change at Costco and I might as well get the "double blessings"--the rebates from Costco and AmEx. The card is free annually with a Costco membership.

RE: Oregon coast

Just heard on the news of a potential tornado at Lincoln City!! We have just come through the second (I think) storm of the season and I am already tired of the rain and wind. It may be a LONG winter. I had hope to get one more trip in before winterizing but it appears that probably won't happen.

RE: American Express - costco card - NEW RULES

I thought there was another Amex/costco card that was not a business card and offered rewards but the rewards were not as high as the business amex/costco card? You are correct. I just checked the Costco web site and there is the business card which rebates 4% on gasoline plus the other categories for rebates. There is also the non-business card which rebates 3% on gasoline plus the other rebate categories at the same rates as the business card. We will just switch to the non-business card. Both are free with the Costco membership.

RE: American Express - costco card - NEW RULES

I love Costco and go there almost weekly. We have been members since 1984 and have a business card (we have a small apt. business). Several years ago we were invited to get the Am Ex. card which would be a credit card and our official Costco card. It sounded like an okay deal. After reading this posting about the new rules, I called AmEx and asked if the info I read here was true. Answer, "yes". I asked if they would be canceling our AmEx card and Costco card, answer, "yes". The number of business/Costco cards might be a small percentage of AmEx business so they probably are hoping to same $$ on rebates. It never occurred to me that we could not use the card for personal purchases; we have done so exclusively since we got the card. All of our business expenses are charged to a different card used exclusively for the business. Life is full of surprises!

RE: Pleasure-way Ford V8 or V10

When we were looking at PWs, I drove both the V8 and V10 and much preferred the V10. We get between 12-15 mpg. In Sept we traveled through the Rockies and I was very happy for the extra power. However, even in routine freeway driving, I still like the more powerful V10 best.

RE: Trick or Treat ?

We camped one Halloween in Oregon. The knock came at the door and I realized that I had no candy. When I opened the door, the visitors had a treat for DH and me plus the dog! I thought that was a wonderful turn about.

RE: What is with that new WallyWorld cell-phone-deal ?

DH and I are on a Family Share plan with 400 minutes to share which we NEVER use. I on a rare occasion send a text to someone. Verizon irritates me because they always charge extra for the text. I pay because it is cheaper than adding a text option to our monthly bill. The taxes on my bill are around 25% and I suppose that would apply even if we went to the WM plan.
