RE: Cost of New Class B's-Why do you want them?

I guess it's a different sort of convenience. The convenience to park in a regular parking space. The ability to get up and go without much hassle. The freedom to be spontaneous and not have to plan all the details before hitting the road. When we looked at class B's, we realized that we'd be more likely to use it on a short weekend trip than any other RV. If we had to hook up a trailer, make sure a campground had a site that would fit us, search around for parking, deal with driving a larger vehicle - then we wouldn't go camping as often as we'd like and if we didn't go camping that often - why buy a camper?

RE: Take'n It To The Streets

We usually drive it once a week and definitely on the weekend. The more we use it, the more we like having it, the less I can imagine being away from home without it!!

RE: Look!...Up in the sky!

I've never measured it, but I have a little sticker on the dash saying that our height is 10'8" - I've only had to back up twice: once for a low bridge and another time for a drive-through overhang. Lowest bridge I've dared to go under said 11'2". Low branches are definitely an issue.....

RE: Driving over the Mackinac bridge in a B

Did it a couple times last summer in our very tall B (just shy of 11') with no probs. First time they charged us as a car, 2nd time as an RV - so I guess it depends upon who you get at your window. To venture into the UP - totally worth it!! Can't wait to go back - hoping for next season.

RE: Best Sprinter conversion?

If you haven't driven a sprinter yet - I highly recommend trying it out before you rule it out.
As others have mentioned - Class B's differ tremendously and the best to buy definitely depends on your needs. We have the airstream Westfalia (18.5 feet long) - one of the few that I could find at the time that could sleep our family of 4 and have 3-point seatbelts. The fact that it fits our needs perfectly aside - it is incredibly easy for me to drive. I am fully 5'1" and usually hate driving large vehicles. I have been able to back it into a regular parking spot without issue and have been able to parallel park it when necessary. Plus - it has an incredible amount of "get up and go" - which gets me in trouble ;)

RE: How do *you* sleep more than two in *your* van?

We have the Airstream Westfalia - built to sleep 4 - we use the upstairs bunk and the kids use the lower bench that folds down. We have also on ocassion rigged the front two seats as a third bed to sleep five by using either the dining table top as the bed across the driver/passenger seats or by rigging a hammock across the front seats. I'm amazed when this works that we fit 5 people/all our stuff/a guitar w/ bathroom and kitchen on an 18.5" rig.

RE: Sprinter ?s

The bottom line though is - if DW likes to drive and travel in the unit, it will be used. If not - as it is with our Ford class C - well it won't need any service, it will just sit and be wasted!
I totally understand! Driving a class C is just out of the question for me. I like to drive, but that extra length/size of the C - I knew that I would never use it. The Sprinter (we have a 2005 Airstream Westfalia - built on a 2004 sprinter chassis) is slightly daunting, I do feel like a bus driver because of the non tilting wheel, but our small length (18.5') makes it relatively easy for me to drive it on a regular basis and park it in a normal parking lot - I've even parallel parked it. The responsive engine is a problem for me - I always start out saying that I'll take it easy and stay in the right lane, but before I know it I'm weaving through traffic!

RE: In what ways do you use your B?

Atlee,
That's funny about your "escape module" we call our Van "Escape Pod 1". I'll take a picture of the spare cover when it stops raining.
Rich
We call ours the "escape hatch" - funny!
We have used ours for many day trips with the kids - hiking, the beach, going to amusement parks - awesome to have a place to eat lunch or grab a quick nap or hose down the kids. There's something to say about having your own place with you. Especially with the kids - having the bathroom with us has saved us many times! I keep eyeing the hitch mounted grills - it would be great to have for tailgating. Maybe when the kids get older.
Oh, and yes, home depot, garage sales, and even camping.

RE: Spring is here, Delaware State Park CG's open tomorrow

Hey gang - We had a change in vacation plans and now I have a reservation for Cape Henlopen on 4/4 (site 36 - water, no elec) that I already paid for but am too late to cancel without losing the one night fee - anyone interested? Shoot me a PM. (Not looking for any $ - just don't want the reservation to go to waste)

RE: "Affluent, most Caucasian, rather male audience" ?

I suspect we are the ones who follow through with suggestions for modifications to our vans, helpful products, etc. I know my DH could care less about having a place to store the wine or put his shoes.
That made me laugh out loud - sounds about right (in this household anyway). I'm always like "look what I figured out!" and I get the "uh huh, that's nice sweetheart" response. Glad to know I'm not alone.

RE: "Affluent, most Caucasian, rather male audience" ?

I don't post often, but I definitely check every day to see if something new is going on. Another gal RVer here. Getting "cabin fever" here - always researching where to camp next...
