Is there road construction on US 321 from Gatlinburg to Townsend? If so, will it be finished by summer?
I plan on staying in Townsend and going to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge for a few day trips. I've heard this is about a 20-30 minute ride with no road construction. Don't know how long of a ride it would be with road construction.
The construction is east of Gatlinburg, not between Gatlinburg and Townsend.
There is a map on page 4 of this press release showing the construction area highlighted in pink.
At least one of your trips from Townsend to Gatlinburg should be through the National Park. It takes about twice as much time, even more if you stop a few times, but it is a nice drive.
The road construction has been a controversial topic for those who live in the area.
If you want to go further east to the Cosby area (perhaps to go river rafting) you can avoid driving through Gatlinburg and the construction by using this winding back road route.
