Now that tomato and corn season are at their peak, its time for my favorite meal 'Summer Dinner'. Similar to Thankgsgiving Dinner and Christmas Dinner, each of which have their 'must have' dishes, Summer Dinner celebrates the season. When I was growing up in New Jersey, a favorite dinner was:

- BBQ Flank Steak marinated in Italian Dressing
- Tomato Salad (tomatoes, cukes, feta, mint, olive oil, salt)
- Corn on the cob

What meal says Summer! to you?

New york strip on the grill, corn on the cob, tomato slices fresh from the garden. Awesome.

Are you better off now than you were 4 trillion dollars ago?

I grew up on a farm in northwestern Oklahoma. We raised our own beef, pigs and chickens and always grew a garden. A typical summer dinner consisted of fresh "free range" fried chicken with gravy. The garden provided fresh new potatoes, sliced tomatos, corn on the cob, sliced cucumbers or cucumber salad. Often my mom would make fresh hot rolls and a pie. The butter was churned from the cream that rose to the top of the fresh milk from our milk cow. I loved those dinners but I guess I took them for granted. I'd give anything to have one today. By the way, in that part of the country people typically refer to "dinner" ad the noon meal and the evening meal is "supper". JR

Growing up in Virginia it was "Dinner" and "Supper" too!!! I think I was probably 10-12 years old before I knew what "Lunch" and "Dinner" were!!!!

A frosty cold gin-and-tonic with lime

Tiny (1 1/2 lb) broiling chickens on the grill, brushed with garlic butter
Homemade potato salad
Thick-sliced tomatoes from the garden or the farmer's market
Fresh steamed baby green beans (well-buttered)

Slices of cold watermelon

Summer meal - has to be a great steak, sauteed mushrooms, corn on the cob and sliced tomatoes. I'll throw in a bag of salt potatoes, but we don't really need them.
Jersey tomatoes are the best. Jersey girl myself

Sorry - I guess that is an upstate thing.
It's basically a 5# bag of new potatoes; four pounds of potatoes and one pound of coarse salt. Boil the potatoes with the salt in the water and serve, skins on, with a lot of melted butter.
Not the healthiest food in the world, but we have very little summer up here

Fresh green beans with tomatoes slices and fresh corn cut off the cob and all cut up together. I know its summer when I can have that. Don't even care if I have any meat. Then cucumber slices with onion slices soaked in water and brown vinegar. Hot water corn bread. I wish I hadn't started this makes my mouth water.

It is still Supper in Kentucky
