Posting pictures or graphics within a text message:
To do this, the picture or graphic must first be on a website open to public view at all times without requiring membership, signing in, etc.

See Picture Host Information for a list and description of some of those. For one-time posts without creating an album, see Alternate Quick Picture Hosts.

Here are the steps:
1. At the source, enlarge the picture

2. Right click on it and select "Properties"

3. Triple click on the URL, right click again and select Copy

4. Make note of the Pixel size, i.e., 600x300

5. Open a Notepad (Programs/Accessories on your computer) and paste that URL and also enter the pixel size.

6. In a New Topic or a Reply, click on the picture icon that looks like a little postcard. Paste that complete URL in the top box. If the pixels are larger than 640 pixels in width and 480 pixels in height, enter one of those numbers in the appropriate box below the URL.
example: picture Properties indicates Pixels of 767x536 so entering 640 in the Width box will automatically correct the height to 447. Any larger width will force side scrolling for 800x600 resolution viewers and your post may be edited or deleted on that basis.

7. Click Finish and then click on Preview in the tool bar (magnifying glass) to confirm it is as you want it to display.

Some photo hosts provide a series of URL's for either a thumbnail, click to enlarge thumbnail or the enlargement itself. If the one you use has this, look for the one that starts with "" and ends in " without those spaces. Either upper/lower case will work.

Note: the maximum width of pictures posted again should not exceed 640 pixels. This includes the total of multiple pictures per line so please add them up. One thing that forces extra width on posting pictures is not posting them on a line by themselves - always hit your enter key before adding pictures after text so they end up on the next line by themselves.

For more information, see Screen resolution for pictures in text

Lance Noob,

I removed the size parameters. The width and height parameters are optional. Your picture was already within guidelines.

Your use of the size parameters actually enlarged the picture.

When you need to use a size parameter, use only one, usually the width. The display engine will automatically adjust the other one to keep it in proportion. Also, the display engine will only use the first parameter it sees and ignore the second one.

Also note, in the message window's Image tool, the first parameter box is height, the second is for width.

An "invalid formatting" error is always because of the use of square brackets.

So as not to require much overhead, the software currently is doing a rudimentary check and doesn't know what the actual error is.

In essence, the software is counting brackets. Since this post has [two][sets] of open and close brackets, it passes the syntax check. An odd number of pairs would fail. Errors occur when posters use brackets instead of parentheses for parenthetical comments; using an open format tag and forgetting to close (for example, start bold without an end bold); some times it is just an extra bracket, (for example using two open brackets instead of one).

This simple check was instituted because these format errors were hanging the servers as the display engine tried to resolve the errors when it formatted a page.

If you are using the square brackets for format tags, such as creating a picture, active link, bold text, etc. then you could use the msssage window's toolbar

or make sure all of the open and close tags are present.

Never typing a square bracket will prevent an "invalid format" error.

Nickelchew,

As noted in your post, I reduced the picture width. In fact, all I did was remove the size parameters you used; your picture was already sized properly.

Note: You used "height=600" and "width=480". The display engine only uses the first parameter it sees and automatically adjusts the second one to keep the picture n proportion. Thus, it use 800 pixels as the width of the picture it displayed. Using your 480 would have greatly distorted the image.

Here is a tutorial on posting pictures using Photobucket.com as the host site.
