We are traveling up I-17, through Flagstaff and catching highway 89 to go to Utah on July 4th weekend.
We are thinking about taking the route of 89A just south of Page, to take a scenic detour around the south end of the Vermillion Cliffs and go through Lee's Ferry.
This is our question: We will be staying the night to break up the drive, and we would like to stay somewhere north of Flagstaff, off of Highway 89 near Cameron or in that area. Does anyone have any ideas??? We're not so sure we want to go as far as Page that first night, because we won't be leaving until 5 p.m.
Small world, we will be going the same way on July 2, last year we went to Bryce canyon, stopped in Flagstaff, and then In Page, took 89
all the way to 12 and to 9 into Bryce. I think there are places to stay north of Flag, someone will chime in , Have a great trip.
There used to be a CG at Cameron. Stayed there once a few years past. Nothing special but still a safe place to stay. Sign up at the Trading Post across hwy.
Also a good CG at Tuba City, sign up at the Motel.....
Take 89 towards the Vermillion Cliffs. At Marble Canyon just after you cross the river(small motel/restaurant) there is a right turn into the Glen Canyon Recreation Area(Lee's Ferry). Several miles back in up on a rise with a spectacular view of the Colorado River there is a federal campground there. First come/first served. I don't think it had hookups but it had picnic tables and covers, gravel back in sites. We thought that a few of the sites would accommodate our 35' if we had wanted to stay. We were camped up on Lake Powell and drove down for the day to tour. I think there was a camphost but don't remember.
Details
Primitive camping, only toilets available. No hookups, no reservations. Approximately 30 sites. Fee is $10 per night. Can accomodate vehicles up to approximately 35 feet. May be full on weekends and holidays. Next available camping is about 50 miles away.
If you're leaving the valley around 5pm, then all the way to Lee's Ferry will get you in pretty late, probably 10:30pm or later. I would shoot for the one in Cameron. I couldn't find anything on that one in the TL Directory. Plus, I'm not sure how many fisherman load up the Lee's Ferry cg on a holiday weekend like the 4th??
When we go to Zion, we do the trip in one day. We took the Jacob Lake/ North Rim/ Hwy 89A route once and will not do again. Very steep grades and takes longer than going through Page. But, the North Rim/ Jacob lake area is very scenic if you're taking your time.
Have fun! The Southern Utah area has become a twice per year visit for us, it's great!
Mtn Lvrs; We will be staying at the Zion river Resort for a week, then we will be going to the south rim GC "Trailer village" for a couple of days, then to Rancho Sedona for a few days, two weeks in all, Can't wait !
We just spent time through there. We stayed at the Garnad Canyon trailer and were happy with it. Then to Wahweap Campground on Lake Powell - that was a great campground - view of the lake, full hook-ups. Then on to Zion River Resort which is excellent.
Get a Navajo Taco at Cameron Trading Post if you get a chance ( be warned the taco is a lot of food).
