Looks like the rumored 68Re is coming. Too bad it's not built in the good ol USA. If I had to guess, I'd say the "in-house redesign" was based on the existing Aisin 6-speed.

I never believed the 4 sp was as good as the dodge owners wanted us to think and this new trannie will be great for dodge trucks. The low reverse gear should make the new owners happy. Chevman

I wouldnt mind having 1 gear in between 3rd and 4th but its not been a problem at all , granted Im not towing 15k but it very seldom downshifts going up hills and going down it will automatically down shift and keep the TC locked to maintain speed control going downhill(06 model). If you look at the gear ratios on the 6speed auto's 5 and 6th are both OD gears aimed at fuel economy and not towing ability. Not saying 6 speeds are bad but unless the new 6speed tranny's are physically bigger they have to have smaller gears and cluthces inside them and that can't be a good thing IMHO. Time will tell how the new 6speed auto's hold up both the Dodge and Gm models. Most people havent racked up enough miles on the 6speed allison to say how it will do in the long run.

Huh?? The 48re is a great tranny. What are you implying?

I bought mine knowing the 48RE is not the Ally but I also know it's very stout and very dependable. Not to mention it's going to be a lot cheaper to rebuild when and if that time comes.
I do wish I had an 06 so I could add a Jake but those circumstances don't come up very often. Maybe downhill in a rain or snow storm towing the trailer but that just doesn't happen very often.....but when it does, gimme the Ally or the PSD/AT. Both are very nice for sure.
Total savings over previous TT: $225 month in payments, $85 month in storage fees, aprx. 5,000 pounds less to be towed, estimated 7 additional mpg, PRICELESS!!!!
The Dodge truck isn't even made in the USA for the most part! Our worst tow vehicle was a US built Ford. The Canadian Chev diesel was just a mistake. The two Mexican Dodges have been much better quality--especially the 2003 with a great 48RE tranny. The top built cars are Japanese--I wouldn't be afraid of a Japanese tranny. Someday the US automakers will learn and get it right!

Yes, we're all aware our Dodges were ASSEMBLED in Mexico. My last Dodge ('97 2500 gasser) was also assembled in Mexico and was trouble free for 86k miles until I traded it for the CTD. My comments are not aimed at the quality of Japanese built products, but rather at the loss of jobs. I'm one to believe that in our global economy, fair is fair, but it's still disheartening to lose jobs to overseas markets.
I also don't mean to imply that there's anything wrong with the 48Re, it is a stout tranny for sure.
"Top built" is a bit misleading. The high-end jap cars do have a better service history than many, but they're starting to slip. Personally, I wouldn't buy one as they have no soul and are dull to drive. I drive what was, a few years past, one of the worst rated cars for reliability, but did enough research to know that they fixed all the problems. I have been trouble free for 40k miles and enjoyed driving a stunning piece of German engineering for every one of them. No, it's not a DC or BMW product. They ARE junk IMHO.
My post is simply an extract of a press release and my thoughts regarding a link someone else recently posted.
I do not buy into any of that "Japanese cars" are so much better built, bally hoo. Never liked the vehicles, never will, want nothing to do with them. Ours are just as good if not better, it does not make me change my mind anyway where they are built, I will only buy from the 'Traditional big three' (GM, Ford, Chrysler).
Why not support our own? Makes me sad when I see N. Americans buying imports, do you think you could just as easily buy a Dodge Truck or Durango in Japan without massive import duties? I do not know for sure, but I think not, one thing I do know, each import is another lost job here. No matter how many factories they build, the money still goes there...
Anyhow to each his own, just my two cents worth.
Happy & safe travels, everyone.

Saw last night on TV advertisement that GM is going for a 100K warranty now. Once upon a time, I had a Baldwin Chev. Motion Performance 427 BB Camaro/4 sp. that came with a 5yr-50K warranty. God that thing was so fast, I had to "sneak" up on it. Had to have a fuel truck following it tho. 3-6 on a good day.
Grantx5 I had a 98 2500 dodge for towing a 32 ft alfa fifth. Every time we towed up a grade in
washington st I always told my wife if we had one more gear this truck would be awesome. The reverse gear was very high and lots of rpm's were needed to back the fifth in an up grade rv site. 14K miles later GM came out with the 5 sp allison and we ordered a new truck. Not knocking the dodge but just what I felt was missing beside the dodge had very poor brakes. Chevman
