I just installed a new pinbox on my 36' raptor.

This is the 5th airborne Sidewinder pinbox that will enable Shortbed trucks can do a 90 deg. turn. The pinbox turns on a turret and your 5th wheel kingpin is disabled to turn by a wedge in the 5th wheel jaw opening.

If you are going to get this for your Raptor, I have a pinbox... Lippert 1621 It is a sticker on your pinbox that identifys it. You will need a ST-100 for the mount adapter.. not ST-200 as it called for.

I got the pinbox at:

Nice,
Good-looking install. I was wondering. I heard a debate this last week regarding pin box extenders. The question is do you think you pin weight has bin lowered by extending the pin box. In other words your pin is now further from the trailer lowering you pin weight. Sounds like it might in theory. However in your case you added some hard where. Any help would be appreciated.

If you extend the pin box it MUST reduce the pin weight, simple engineering (statics was the class) using vectors, etc.

When we ordered our Fuzion I asked about putting on the sidewinder and got a price I was ready to accept. Then read somewhere about warrenty issue's. I called sidewinder and they of couse say no problem and lipperd who make's the Keystone frame's approve's them. But after follow up Question's to Keystone and Lipperd they both say they don't have enough exsperiance with the new design and will NOT warrenty anything that happens if they feel it was caused buy the new pinbox. For me the jury is still out as know one know's what may happen but if anything does, I don't want to be left holding the bag. Or cracked trailer.

On the 10" extension, I assume the pin weight would be less as to leverage physics.. the length of the pin box is the same length as the stock box, just when the box pivots, it helps for turning.

the weight of the unit is 245# so maybe double or more than a regular box but the benefits outweigh the unsprung weight. it uses the Same mounting holes on the trailer and all bolts are 5/8" grade 8.

All bolts are torqued to 110 to 160 lb 'cept for the turret bolts at 80#... this seems like it will be a very good hitch box.. its not light and cheap, that's for sure..

I am going to go on a weekend tri locally next weekend, I'll report how it did then.

Keeping this to the top for a bit.

I noticed that the airbag has to be filled to like 105 psi then the weight lowered onto it. If I try to add air with the weight on it, then the bag goes down.. This tells me that the bag is at like 200 PSI or so when the weight is on it.. I will use a dig. gauge to find out.

Heres the final pics of install and of testing of the box.

http://www.turbodieselregister.com/forum........um/189023-5th-airborne-install-pics.html

This box is wonderful!! It smooths out the bumps and really does do 90 degree turns. This box is really good and rated for 19K so it is good for all trailers. If you have a short bed, and want to not worry about cab clearance, get this, it is worth it!!

If that moves the pivot point back another 2' behind the hitch, aren't you getting closer to the way a tag pulls? I thought the point of the fith is to keep the pivot point over the axles? Let us know if there is any difference while towing with a side wind?

That's a very interesting alternative to a slider hitch. Thanks for the full description and pics of the install. I would be very interested in future reports from you on how it handles all road and weather conditions when towing and especially when semi-trucks are encountered. Good luck! Great rig, btw.
