Hi gang,

My family just got a class B at the end of last season so we're still newbies to the camp cooking thing. The kids really look forward to the marshmallows and smores at the campfire, but I'm not looking forward to the sticky sugary mess just before bed!!

I thought that someone here had posted that there was a coookbook that had a "on a stick" chapter. I'm just looking for alternatives to the smore that are just as fun for the kids. Anyone here have some skewer favorites?

Just keep a pack of wipes handy - it's not that bad, lol!

We took a package of frozen Orita french fries with us last time, and cooked them on a cookie sheet (spray with Pam) sitting on the fire grate. They came out great, nice and crispy!

haha - it's not just the mess, it's that I want to have some different options! We've been camping out pretty much one night/weekend this month and the smores are getting a little old.... We definitely keep the babywipes handy!!! Thanks for that link to the kids cookbook. I had seen that someone posted wrapping biscuit dough around a stick and having the kids cook it that way then add butter, cinnamon and sugar after it's cooked - I can't wait to try it this weekend. I also got some mini-hot dogs for the kids to cook up. Another thing that I wanted to try for myself was getting chunks of pineapple and wrapping them in ham and cooking them up. Basically this weekend we're gonna have a tray of a bunch of things that we're gonna try out.

Keep throwing out ideas if you have any!!

Oh yeah, we do the Pillsbury cinnamon roll dough-on-a-stick thing - very tasty!

Jiffy Pop is hard to find. We got a couple of cases off of eBay last year, but we need to restock soon. There is an art to doing Jiffy Pop over a campfire - it needs to be really hot, but not in direct flames or it will scorch on the bottom and not pop very well.

Cut hot dogs into pieces and the children can hold them over the fire for snackes. For meals they can make them whole but the 1 1/2 pieces are much more fun.
And put them on sticks of course.
There must be other foods that will work the same way.
My parents had an over the fire pop corn popper that worked well if you were persistent and did not hold directly in the flames.

Pie irons are what we use when we're bored with smores.........Also, the fudge covered graham crackers work best for smores.....Just roast the marshmellow and stick between 2 grahams......The fudge is already on there, no need to add anthing else and the fudge tastes better than plain old chocolate.

Also, "Smore-oes" are fun......Untwist an oreo, place roasted marshmellow between cookies..

We used our pie irons for the first time last week end. Oh My!!!! The grand kids loved them. I liked the lemon pie filling with a marshmallow on it. Yummy.

I found some strawberry marshmallows and took them. The grand kids loved them too, just roasted, not made into smores. But, I think they would be good between some plain cookies or something like that.

Lots of possibilities, just have to find the ones that your family will like.
