Madison CG!! Try and get a spot on the bottom side of loop C and you will be a close walk to the Madison, Gibbon, and Fire Hole River. Our favorite spot is C113 and has plenty of room for the awning and our set-up (see sig). Not at all cramped in with other campers. After Labor Day, the Elk activity will be great in that area too!
Right on the water, Lewis lake campground is right on Lewis Lake,(I have never stayed here so not sure of the sites)
Pebble creek and Slough creek both have well you guessed it creeks next to them. Sept is the very best time to go. If you want to hear the wolves howl either slough or pebble creek will be your best bet. If you want to watch the elk fight and listen to them bugle Mammoth campground is the best. When we go in the first part of September we stay at Indian Creek(closes Sept 15th). No water by the camping sites but just a short walk away and has some pretty good fishing. You can set at the campfire and listen to the elk bugle, or drive down the road to moose flats to look for moose. Do bring cloths for all seasons as the weather can be any way that time of the year, last year we drove out of the park on snow packed roads (end of September)
Hope this helps

We had no problems with our site at Fishing Bridge. We were able to get the awning out & slides & still had room, not like what we are used to though. Just see about getting a site with out a tree.
Madison is on the Madison River, surprise!!! It is ok. The campground at Grant Village/W. Thumb is on Yellowstone Lk. More trees at Grant. Our site was about 50 yards from the lake. Bridge Bay is also near the lake. Lewis Lk CG is on Lewis Lk. Check website for opening and closing dates. We have used Madison, W. Thumb and Canyon CGs. We like Canyon but it isn't near water.

'A' Loop looks over a meadow with wildlife throughout the day. The Gibbon River (more like a creek) runs through the meadow with lots of oxbow bends. There are at least two resident buffalo that wander the meadow along with the campgound. WATCH OUT FOR THEM. They are wild. Also present is a group of elk that tend to fight amongst themselves and a red fox that has a route through the entire campground around late afternoon. 'B' and 'C' loops are wooded and delightful.
FILLED TIMES - IF YOU WANT A FIRST COME FIRST SERVED SITE... GET THERE EARLY. 9-10am. ESPECIALLY FOR LOOP A.
You are more than welcome to look at our website under Adventures/Archive for the dates 7/1/08-7/15/08 for our daily blog. We also wrote a summary article of Yellowstone. You can also find that on our website under Wise Weekly Index.
