Hello Everyone...

A good friend of ours is getting ordained into the Ministry this comming Saturday (Dec,6-2008) in Big Rapids MI.

Google sends Me up I90 past Buffalo NY. cross into Canada then back into the USA,past Flint MI. and go north after I hit Grand Rapids MI.

My question to you fellow travelers besides the using of an Anti-Gell for my Diesel Fuel--what other precautions can/should I take..

What can I expect for road condictions..

Oh and will have my USA passbook to cross over to Canada...

I plan on doing it in 2 legs.

Day 1 is to travel 446 miles and shut down at the Flying J in Pembroke NY.
Day 2 is to travel 361 miles and fill up at the Flying J in Grand Ledge MI. and do the final 110 miles to Big Rapids..

You've got to cross the border twice. Possible vehicle inspections going into Canada and then coming into the US. Maybe faster to stay south of Lake Erie. Don't know, haven't been into Canada for a while. Maybe someone else could add some recent knowledge about border crossings. Gary

Best to keep an eye on the weather. We have another weather system due in this week. It's best to come into Michigan at Port Huron and use I-69 which is a little on the ruff side, since I-75 in Detroit has all kinds of construction. I would plan on letting your fuel tank get below a half a tank. Carry some blankets, flashlight, water, and snacks in the vehicle with you in case you get stuck in traffic because of an accident that closes the highway or snow.

Hello Everyone...

Hi MI Director,,

I am traveling with my Lance T/C so food/snacks/housing/heat/place to stay is kind of covered..

What can I expect for temps...

Will there be an issue if I pack an additional 30 pound propane tank and carry it in the back of my Truck for insurance.???I an asking about carrying it in and out of Canada..

I gave my fuel tank a full dose of Hawes anti-gel Fuel Additive today and will carry extra Btls for the entire trip..

My T/C will be full operational with full water and both propane tanks full as I set out...

Hi Mike
Another weather factor to be aware of is lake effect snow. With the lakes still open you can expect snow at any time along the I90 corridor. Have a safe trip. D&E

Mike,
Don't worry about the diesel fuel in the colder climate. By now all service stations have winter diesel fuel. Mind you it was prudent to at some conditioner in your tank. If I were you I would have a spare fuel filter with me.
As far as weather is concerned that's a tough call. I would pick the canadian side. The crossing at 1000 Islands is less busy. Crossing back to the states I would use the Sarnia crossing.
By the way if you crossed at the 1000 Islands you're welcome to use our hook up to sleep over going there or back.
Larry.

Mike,
First, stock up on fuel before crossing into Canada. Diesel here is $0.97 CDN a liter, or $3.00 US gal.

Lake effect snow is bad. East and south of the lake. 81 will be bad through New York. Good thing is Canada has lots of plows, the 401 will most likely be good through to Toronto. Note Toronto traffic is worst than any where in Mass. Than back into another snow belt west of Toronto through to Windsor.

Diesel purchased this time of year here is winterized. But do not take any chances, I use Kleen Flow.

Good Luck, do you know where you plan to spend the nights yet? There are some free spots.

We have traveled over and under Lake Ontario, the 401 is the fastest.

Temps here in Lower Michigan are going to be 30s-20s day with low 20s-teens night for the next week. We usually have cold fronts with snow moving threw every few days. Canda does a better job keep there highway clear then they do in Michigan. Snow in the forcast for Thursday and Saturday this week.

If you end up driving through the states and want a place to park with electric, I'm just south of Ann Arbor, MI and only 3 miles off highway US-23.

Hi Mike,
The first thing I would do is check the weather both Canada & USA. There could be a big difference. I'd let that be my guide. Going around those lakes can get bad. We are on the Canadian border and got 2 inches, south of us and north of Syracuse got 31 inches. www.wixt.com is Syracuse and does a good weather with lakes effect predictions. Have fun, take pictures,
Sue
