I have an 01 powerstroke 7.3, Love the truck
BUT, I also have a friend that has an 05 Duramax
with the allison, alot better truck for towing.
That allison is the cats weow. Buy a Duramax.
I'm sure I'm going to get pounded by the Ford guys
but I'm speaking the truth. The ford 7.3 is an awsome
motor, but the tranny is a piece of crap.

I had a 2004 with the sick oh, I wouldn't buy another.

It is kind of a gamble if you get a good one or a bad one. But, there were some issues with that engine. 2003-2006 or 2007 were the model years with that engine.

I had a 2004 F-250 with the 6.0PSD, put about 70,000miles on it in three years, towing a 12k fiver about 5-10k of those miles. It was a great truck, plenty of power, decent ride, good fuel mileage. Only reason I do not have it now is that we purchased a very large trailer, to heavy for the 3/4 truck. It did die on me one time, due to a known defect, a TSB had been issued on the problem, wiring harness chaff. Ford towed it in and fixed the problem next morning. No further issues. Have now a 2008 F-450 6.4PSD(for the big trailer) that is a fantastic truck, best dang pulling pickup ever built. Did have a radiator develop a small leak, again Ford fixed it with a new rad and had it back to me quick. Indeed there were issues with some 6.0PSDs, though of all the owners of those type trucks, only one I personally know had issues with it. Knowing him I understand why. He beats the******out of anything he drives, especially those that he is not making the payments on, ie, the 6.0PSD service truck he drives. All I know is when it is time for me to purchase a new heavy duty truck, I will be returning to Ford once more. Ford's Superduty line is just the best combination of everything that makes a truck great. Not just one item like say an engine or transmission but the complete package

Avoid the 6.0 prior to 2006, the 6.4 seems to be OK (except for mpg on early build dates).

I just bought an 08 6.4 liter diesel, crew cab, long bed, 4x2 in November of 2008. Many of them on dealer lots still, and they are offering $8,000 rebates and other incentives.
I love this truck and its power. some people complain of issues on theirs and EPA mandated emissions stuff that hasn't helped mileage. But then again I get better mileage than I did on my 2005 5.4 liter gas crew cab.
I haven't had any issues with mine. Its solidly built and has great towing power.

Well here goes------As my name says I"m a lifetime "honest" Ford Guy. I have had 8 ford trucks 5 of them diesels. A great place to review and search topics is Southern Cal Powerstrokes

I have not bought a new truck because my 7.3 was and is the best darn trouble free towing motor Ford ever had. It is actually an International motor. The next motor, the 6.0 is a very trouble prone motor. Ford brought legal action against International for the warranty mess on that motor. Dont touch it.

My close friend just bought a about year ago the new 6.4 twin turbo zero emissions diesel. Aside from the new clean burning diesel technology issues, he gets very bad fuel mileage, very bad. === All manufacturers new "clean burning diesels " have similar issues.

Remember back in the 70's when the early smog stuff had the motors all messed up, it's here again.

Check out the link above and learn.

I've had experience with both 7.3 and the Duramax, they have both been awesome trucks,my wife was hit by a service truck in her car and wanted to purchase a new truck,we both leaned towards the Duramax,we test drove more than one,all it took was one drive in a 08 Ford and that was it,the fit and finish was far better in the Ford,we currently have 15000 miles and it has a 8inch Fabtech lift with 37inch tires,SCT programer with the off road program,we get around 14 mpg highway not sure what it gets in town, for the short time it was stock we seen 17 mpg the wife is in love with it I am also very happy with it so far.

You are going to hear over and over to stay away from the 6.0. I went down the 6.0 road with ZERO regrets. I have an 04 F 350 with 117,000 that runs like a top. A buddy has the same year with no trouble at around 80,000 or so. PSD mechanics say to drive them like they're stolen. I couldn't be more pleased with my truck. JMO
