16 degrees is the amount of turn before it starts to slide. The pin lock mechinism will work at any angle. The trouble with exceeding the 16 degrees is that the head will move, slide and turn making it very difficult to hitch. I have tried it

I believe that if you do exceed the 16 degrees that it is not possible to fully lock the locking mechanism because the hitch is in one of the forward travel position slots and not up against the rear stop.
Correct - your must lift the entire hitch head off the two side saddle pins and re-couple the same way. We do it all the time in the trees....

Finaly saw the pictures. Tubes look fine. Bearing failure IMO is the clear cause of this trouble.
I will be inspecting mine a bit closer. In the pic it sure looks rusted. I think an inspection may have warranted a replacement some time ago.

I'm going to go through my entire super-glide to check for signs of any of these potential problems, and as a PM I'm going to change the roller.
Does anyone have a link for parts?? I haven't found one in my neck of the woods, which is Ventura, Ca.

I just pulled mine off and I think you will need to get it from Pullrite.
It must be removed to inspect and mine was barely tight so it was easy.
GLM, if you get a replacement please post what the new one is like as far as play and ease of rotation. It appears to have a cover and a seal but it sits in a cup. I can see towing in the rain could get some water in there and get past the seal under the right conditions.

I am torn between two different causes, #1 - would be the roller failure , it seems to have alot of BROWN rusty greese on the remains.#2 - would be turning too tight, there is alot of damage to the head of the hitch which looks like it may have been twisted to me?? Either way , it could have been alot worse as no one was injured except for maybe someone's ego and or pride...Joe

The 1-1/8" hex nut was loose
Mine is not a ball bearing but a nylon sleeve on the special through bolt. Still spinning freely after an extended stay in the Seattle rain. I do grease this sleeve. My hitch was purchased 12-2007.

Mine is about two years older. That new wheel is interesting.
Lower cost or previous bearing had poor reliability?

I just took the roller out and it was tight to the point were I had to used an air impact wrench.
It's not the type that mapguy posted; it's what I believe to be a ball bearing type.
I'll, nevertheless, call Pullrite tomorrow a.m. and get a replacement, as well as a new lock jaw assembly, and torque spec's.
Other than that the rails look straight with only minor scratched, and I didn't see and signs of stress on the entire frame.
I have an older 16K so that may explain the differnt roller type.
