A few questions for those who know diesel engines far better than us!

We finally have our gauge package installed on our F-350 7.3L diesel, EGT, trans temp, and boost.

What should we be looking for? What are the ideal temps for EGT and tranny -- when cruising and when climbing a hill? What are the max temps that we should not let the gauges go above before taking action -- down shifting, slowing down, etc. Stopping!

Thanks in advance for all the advice!

Keep EGT under 1300* (sustained), and under 1500* (peak - under 10-20 seconds) so long as the EGT probe is installed pre-turbo. Post turbo, take 400-500* off these numbers.

Trans also depends on where the sensor probe is located, but generally keep it under 250* if it is mounted in the hot line out to the cooler, and under 210* or so if it mounted in the pan.

Much depends on where the temps are obtained though.

Thanks, we'll have to call our mechanic to see where the sensors are installed. Is there an easy way for us to check this out ourselves?

Your Ford will have a port on the drivers side where most aftermarket probes are screwed in. There will be one wire running up towards the firewall/dash area. This loaction gives a very accurate temp. I don't like to see ATF get above 220. If it gets above 230, it won't last long. If you see temps regularly above 210, you should look into getting something done i.e. extra fan, bigger cooler, etc.

Pre turbo EGT probes are mounted in the exhaust manifold. Post turbo one fit into the exhaust pipe as it leaves the turbo. Pre turbo is the best spot.

Thanks, it looks like we are doign fine as long as the EGT is mounted pre-turbo. On the flats, the tranny stays around 150 to 160 with the EGT arougn 500 to 600. On hills the tranny will heat up to the 170 range, sometimes going up toward 180 and the EGT rises to 1000 to 1100. Like I said, I have to make sure those readings are pre-turbo.

Thanks for the info.

Most common place to stick the thermocouple is drilled here. Right above your oil filter area.

And a pic with the thermocouple installed

Most common place to stick the trans temp is here. Driver side
TRANS SENDER MOUNT HERE

Those temps your getting look allot like mine. Pre-Turbo. My Trans are a little lower due to a big cooler. But yours look fine. And both are if your mounted like the pictures, like is suspect you are.
