I don't know exactly what would suite your needs but I am ordering an item from Cabelas for about $35.00 that goes under the ball and provides a step on either side of the coupling while the trailer is on or not.

Searching Cabelas site, and could not find this. Any chance you have a link, or item number? Thanks!

I like Sutak's scheme. We have a Wells Cargo with 2 quads so we modified the trailer by adding expanded metal on a frame to the trailer and then bought second folding stair that goes down to the frame. Ours is wierd because the Bigfoot door is off center and high due to the basement and being a 4x4. Our second set of steps is a 4 step and it gets strapped to the camper. The original 6 step goes along for the ride. We just spent 2-1/2 months in Mexico and only had the 6 step out 2 or 3 times. One caution, with the offset frame on the trailer it is almost untowable without some sort of extension.

Tex,
I took another picture where the top step is horizontal now. I attached an aluminum angle on the intermediate step. The collapsible step rest on it thus the top step horizontal. Don't have a picture but the first step is just a plastic step that is resting on the trailer tongue hwen in transit.

I have this step, it does help a lot but for me not a final solution. What ever you guys come up with make sure it is stable. I stepped out of a trailer a few months back and missed all the steps and came down on my ankle and broke it. My ankle will never be the same again, so please be careful!

where can you get these steps

I have looked for something like this for some time. I have folding steps which work fine when the camper is on the truck, but I need a three steps when off the truck. Most three step stools I have looked at have a safety bar across the top which would be in the way of the door on the camper. If this ladder's safety rail can be folded out of the way, then I would buy this.

We thought the Jumbo stairs would be perfect for our basement camper on a 4x4, because the stair treads are deep and don't overlap (8" rise and run, 300 lbs capacity), so you can walk up and down them with ease. The 3 step version goes on the internet for ~$140.

We got a 3 step clone of this ladder for ~$105 at Orchard Supply Hardware. It was called a "Stable Step", model MT-3B, by "Xtend & Climb". Distributed by Core-Distributions, Inc. - imports, of Minneapolis, MN. You might find where to buy them in Canada by contacting them for a retailer. Sam's Club online has them for $84 with shipping.

The handle folds up and down. We use it down, when straight in front of the door, up when it is sideways to the door when towing or accessing the propane compartment when changing bottles.
