The but splice is fine, but with the splice I recomend there is no cutting of wires. A simple answer.

I did this mod but I did it differently, I purchased the same fan only much cheaper...hard disk fan and I have read that it works better if you put the fan on the bottom shelf to circulate the air better, The small fans have 2 red and 2 black wires going to a 4 prong pc connector. I took the 2 sets of wires cut off the 4 prong connector and twisted the 2 reds together and 2 blacks together then ran some small gauge speaker wire hooking the reds to one side, whites to the other. ran it up to the top where the wires are at. There are four wires, 2 reds, 1 white, and 1 black. hook the one speaker wire that is hooked to the red wires from the fans to the BLACK wire using a inline splice. take the other speaker wire and solder a alligator clip to it. Then when I turn on the fridge all I do is clip the alligator clip to the fins on the back of the fridge and the fans come on when the door is closed...off when the door is open.

here are some picks of my install,

I am going to install this fan Link

With the fridge off, I touched the fan wire to the red wire and it ran. Good, that means that this is my wire. Now, there are four wires but they are inside this little white plastic thingie that you pull apart. How do I get the new wire in there with it? Do I try to pull the red wire out? (It did not come out when pulled firmly) or just cut the red wire BEFORE the white plastic thingie and use electrical tape?

Thanks very much,
Ellie

You d not want the red wire, if the fridge is off and the fan turns on, when you turn the fridge on the fan will not work. I know on my fridge (Norcold) the black wire is what you want.

Shoot, I already did it with the red wire and did not even turn the refrigerator on to try it. I will go home tonight and check it. If it does not run, then I will have to change it.

Should be easy, right?

I did use a quick splice of sorts. It had a spade on one end and the clamp thing on the other.

Tell me if my thinking on this is correct: I used the quick connect with a spade. It's called a t something. The spade part being the fan. If I simply disconnect this from the red wire, I can leave the red wire alone.

Then put the connecter on the black wire and insert spade. Actually, I know I can do this part. It is the red wire and leaving it with that connection thing on it. Will it be ok or do I have to cut it all off and splice the two wires with a butt connector?

Thank you,
Ellie

You guys are lucky you can install these fans. I have to use the $15 walmart fan and I do not think it works as well moving air.

After 6 days I have frost built up on my fins which I am sure makes it not work as well.

I have a newer norcold so I cannot figure out how to install and neither has the seller of this fan

good for you ellie, i have the very same fan from the very same seller as you, put mine in back in 07 and it works very well. it was recomended by one of my camping world instructors. i ran mine to the hot wire to the light bulb. when the frige is off the fan and light are off. very simple way to hook up, i took the red wire off and placed the fan wire at the connection and slid the red wire connector back on. the fan stays on as long as the frige is on. with the switch is off the fan does not run.
good luck

So you used the red wire, not the black wire? Gee, I guess I will just have to see it in action when I get home.

I was so tentative about doing this, but the great help here made it easy.

ok, I am home and the fan works just fine with the refrigerator on. There is no black wire. There are two black and white wires and two red wires.

I guess I will leave it as is.

You said that it works fine but... is that with the door open that you see the fan running? or when the door is closed? I know that the way I wired mine, that the fan shuts off when the door is opened.
