It works with the door open. I can't see it when the door is closed But, I closed it and opened it real quick and it was still going strong, not winding up.
I didn't look real close to find the darned door switch to test it "closed". Will look again tonight after work. Does anyone know where it is?

In my fridge if you listen closely you can hear the fan running with the door closed. The location of the door switch varies depending on the model of your fridge .. but finding it should be pretty easy - just a button or lever which moves when the door opens or closes. In a Dometic RM2852 its a lever located directly in front of the light on the right side.

Does you fridge have a light set up like the picture of mine? if so, splice into the black wire.

I also ran both wires from that fan to my door switch. The fan only runs when the refrigerator is on and the door is closed. You can test that result with the refrigerator on,door open, and by pressing the door switch to turn off the refrigerator light. That is when my fan turns on.
I ditched the alligator clip thingy.

I only have two red wires and two black and white wires. I mean to say that the wire is black and white.. two of them are that way.
I cannot use the door switch to turn off the light. I did just find out from a friend that I could run a magnet under the switch and it will turn off. I had looked everywhere for a way to turn off the light with the door open so I could check it.
My fan runs whenever I put the alligator clip on the fins.

If your door switch doesn't turn off your light then I suspect your door switch needs to be replaced/fixed. You really don't want your light running when your doors closed - its a heat source which will diminish the efficiency of your fridge and also suck down your battery power.

I found it. It is a magnet... there is no button or switch for me to hold in to see if the light goes off. I put a magnet under the top of the fridge where the door meets and voila! the light turns off.
I would have never guessed it but a friend told me to try it and he was correct.
The fan runs when the light is off. So, I'm good to go.

Hi All.
I have the very same fan. Even if you hook it up to a hot lead all of the time. No Biggie. Just install a simple rotary on/off switch to the fan housing. That way you can control when you want the fan to run. In cooler temps, you really don't need to run the fan. Its the really hot days that you have to worry about. Since we mostly Dry/Camp most of the time, I like being able to choose when I want to run the fan. Good Luck. Happy Camping. Dan & Jill

After 6 days I have frost built up on my fins which I am sure makes it not work as well.
I have a newer norcold so I cannot figure out how to install and neither has the seller of this fan
Richard (eBay seller of the fan I believe you and I both own) is working to figure it out. I have a 2008 Jayco with a Norcold N61 series. I have not been able to find a wire that stays hot once the door is closed. I have sent Richard/eBay'er the wiring diagram from Norcold and he is really trying to help make it work. Anyone here able to take a look at the diagrams Norcold N61 (maybe power will have to come from the door (?) and advise how to successfully install this fan to run with the door shut? Much appreciated.

I have the thetford model# N611 and if you go back to the second page of this thread posted a picture of my setup and I have a detailed description of which wires to splice into.
