Got back a couple of weeks ago from a month long southwest trip. Followed the route of the Santa Fe Trail from Kansas City to Santa Fe and then headed almost due west across northern New Mexico and Arizona and then up into Utah and came across southern Utah and southern Colorado.

Did you take the time to stop and look at the wagon tracks on the trail when going through Kansas? There are a number of places where this is still possible. Pretty fascinating stuff.

I am going to do the "follow the Santa Fe trail" trip one of these days......on a dirt road 1 mile south of my house and about 5 miles west is a Santa Fe trail marker.(just west of Lyons, KS)..the actual Santa Fe trail is so "wavy" that it crosses over 56 highway a bunch of times....when I lived in Dodge City my antiques shop was on "Trail St"..which is one block south of Wyatt Earp Blvd (hwy 50) and is the "original Santa Fe Trail"....almost every town in Kansas that is on the Trail (and where it's splits to the Cimarron) has a public library/museum where you can get county maps with the trail marked on it showing where it is and "current" street names, etc. (and Dodge City Historical Society has great resources on the Trail as does the visitors center 4 miles west of Larned)
This is a good website to get info on the Trail, maps, and current directions to Trail Sights.

Yes, I did see some of the ruts left from the wagons. I also must say that Lyons is a great little town. They have free RV parking and I walked around the golf course the night I was there. Very pretty place.
Kansas is a very RV friendly state with lots of free campsites, i.e. the state fishing lakes, lots of small town parks, and the rest areas.
If you know anyone on the city council at Lyons tell them thanks for the great hospitality.
