We're heading eastbound from California and I heard there are some nice campgrounds in the Show Low area of Arizona and instead of just staying on I-10 all the way through Arizona and New Mexico, I thought about detouring up through the Show Low area for a few days or weeks, no hurry.
It looks like one can take Hwy 60 from Phoenix thru Miami/Globe OR Hwy 87/260 thru Payson. To those who know, which would be the preferred route to tow a 36' fiver?
Also, according to guides and the internet, the Venture In park near Show Low appears to be a nice place to stay, any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Neither route will be an easy tow but I regularly take the Beeline Hwy (87) northeast to Payson, then east on 260 to Show Low. You will be climbing the Mogollon Rim which is a bit of a show go, but gear down if necessary and you will make it.
I live 40 miles west of Show Low in a one-horse town of Overgaard. We are in the largest stand of Ponderosa Pines in the world. Very pretty area and nice small campgrounds too. Send me a PM if you come through this way and I can show you a couple nice places to stay.

I second BuckBarker. It's a beautiful area. If Show Low didn't have the elevation it has, I'd snowbird there but............that's snow country.

I third BuckBarker. I went from Mesa to Show Low in March to visit a friend and took 60 going and 87/260 on the return and much preferred 87/260, more scenic and an easier drive.

We just came over 60 through Miami and Globe with a 45' MH and toad. It was an OK ride but there was a lot of construction around Miami/Globe. The route to Globe isn't particularly pretty. There are still a lot of open mines in the area. Don't know about 60 from Globe to Show Low. We took 70 to Globe from S NM. Thought it would be a change from 10. The Beeline through Payson is a beautiful ride. The scenery is great.

I just got back from a trip around the state of Arizona. I started by entering AZ on the I-10 and spent a couple of days by the Colorado River in Ehrenberg. I worked my way to Page Springs, which is between Sedona and Cottonwood, I also spent time nearby in Camp Verde. From Camp Verde we traveled to Clint's Well/Happy Jack, perhaps the most beautiful spot I've seen in AZ. From there we traveled to the Overgaard/Show Low area. We caught the I-40 west and spent the last days of our trip in Bullhead City and then back to So Cal.
I highly recommend the Clint's Well area, even if just for a short stay, there is very little development there and very pristine.

When our Daughter came to visit a short while ago her GPS told her to come through Globe. Those gadgets are nice but not always right. I've run it both ways and 87/260 is the right way. There's an RV park just past Clint's Wells........ Have a safe trip.

...but Clint's Well is far north of the 87/260 split.

We now live south of Tucson and went to Show Low for the first time last fall. We stayed at Voyager which is a ways out of town. Looked at Venture Inn and would go back to Voyager. There is a park there right on the lake but my forgetter is working overtime and I can't think of the name of it. It is nice but tighter and not sure about hookups - no reservations there. Neat area - drive out all along the Mogollon Rim.
See some pics on our website if you would like www.laurenbarbara.com under Wanderings then Show Low.
Be safe.

Thanks for all the replies. We're in Blythe for the night but off in the morning and looks like 87 is the route! Our first rv park of choice is Elk Pines in Overgaard and if it isn't what it is portrayed on the website, we'll keep driving towards Show Low and Venture In.
