I have stayed here before with reservations and am very familiar with the area and park. I will be in the area the last few days of June and of course all reserved sites are taken. My question is how do the first come first served sites work? Is there a daily wait list or do they go to whoever is there waiting at the actual time someone leaves and opens on of these sites up? Staying here would be my first choice and Rocky Bayou my second. What are my odds? Thanks.

Do they even have some first come sites? not sure they do. RB is a great CG and the odds much better of getting in albeit not as desireable as HB

Yes they have 6 walk up spots according to Reserve America. I was able to reserve the nights I needed at Rocky Bayou. I have not stayed there yet, just drove through it once. Looking forward to it.

On numerous occasions when we camped at Henderson there were empty sites even though Reserve America showed every site booked. Either people didn't show at the last minute or walk-in site availability isn't well known or utilized.

We were at HB last month and noticed the same thing as Gunship Guy. I'd recommend you contact the park directly.

My suggestion would be to take a ride over to HB from RB and go in the office and say that you are staying at RB but would really like to move over to HB. Ask them what they would suggest. Go into the office with a big smile and a pleasant attitude. 99% of the rangers and volunteers are very helpful and would like to make you happy. They may know of a camper who is checking out early, etc. I have been told to show up at the office the next day just before 8:00am and by 8:10, I was walking out with a site.

Good luck,

Ed

Manager's Message
The Environmental Interpretive Center has a new exhibit and can be viewed daily from 9am-4pm. The park is now in its summer season and open for business from 8am-8pm daily.
