I am a little upset. We are getting ready to head out next week so I decided that I would make use of the roof rack on the TC. Have looked at it many times but not till today did I realize that the design sucks. Climbed the ladder and at the top of the ladder (the most accessible point I was going to put a car top bag - WRONG, bathroom roof ceiling vent is located there. I think on newer versions they have moved the bathroom from the left rear but now unless I want to get up on the roof I am without my roof storage I was hoping for. And if I get on the roof the roof vent is there as soon as I get up the ladder, can you say problem waiting to happen for middle age fat guy!

My problem is that the we want to take a couple of Rubbermaid totes for extra gear (tent, air mattress, stove) and two inflatable Kayaks. The Kayaks weigh in at 60 lbs, totes around 10 each. So my question would these be okay in the cab over? We will be on some dirt roads, nothing major off road so no real bouncing but it would be around 100lbs of gear up top? Any thoughts? I really did not want to take the trailer as we will be in a number of spots that the trailer is not made for and the front of the truck is full of people.

Note to NL - if you would have put the ladder on the other side - or the bathroom on the other side the roof rack would have worked a lot better!

I don't have an NL, but I wouldn't think 140 lbs in the cab over would be a problem at all. In fact, I wouldn't think double that would be a problem. My .02.

I don't think you will have a problem, after all it's designed for 2 adults to sleep there. We have driven with a teen age grandson in the cab over (where legal and on dirt) without a problem.

We carry a lot of stuff up there in our NL. As stated above, it is designed to hold a couple of people, so 140 pounds should be fine.

I removed our "roof rack". It didn't appear to be for anything but aesthetics. As far as the cab-over, we carry a lot of stuff up there also and have never had a problem. Happy camping, Dave.

I was thinking of removing them as well, but that would leave the holes so I think I will leave them there. They work really good for grabbing trees when in tight spots.

When we bought our NL 10.2 SE (not very long ago), the paperwork that came with it warned that "the roof rack is for decorative purposes only". The roof is plenty strong but I wouldn't fasten ANYTHING to that wimpy roof rack. It IS real good at trimming the trees on the way to your campsite though. The way that the bar angles down at the forward ends makes it an excellent limb catcher. -Mark.

Thank you for that. I did not get anything about the roof rack (mine was used) so I am happy I know now that it really will not hold. Now for plan B, need to get the deck and/or trailer to haul the extra stuff for the next trip. This trip will load the cab over.
