We need to get to Shingletown, east of Redding (CA). We were going to go via what looked like the shortest route, the 299 along the Trinity River, but a fellow camper said no way. He described it as up and down and winding, and advised us to take the 199 to Grants Pass and then the 5 south to Redding. While it's longer, mile-wise, it looks like a better bet, though it also looks up and down (but maybe not as twisty). Anyone with experience on the 299 and/or 199?
Yes i have just came across the 199 and in my opinon i will never do it again I like the 299 better yes it is curvie. and up and down but the I5 has alot more and longer climbs to it then the 299. and on the 199 there is some areas that are real narrow more aso then the 299. What ever way you go so go easy.

To each his own. Both highways have sections that give me the willies. I prefer 199 because it has fewer miles of "sketchy" road or maybe it just feels that way because I'm more familiar with it. But it is backtracking for where you're headed, and 299 is more direct.

It's six of one; half-dozen of the other. My preference would be 199 as there are much fewer windy curves involved getting to I-5. Hwy. 299 is curvy from about 8 miles east of Hwy 101 all the way to Redding. On I-5 heading south from Grants Pass, OR )Hwy 199) you do have a couple of relatively long grades but they are not all that bad and not that curvey.
I want to leave this earth quietly in my sleep like my grandfather and not like the hysterical, screaming passengers riding in granddad's RV just before the big crash.
