When I took Police Science in college, our text book described a method to figure out the grade of a hill using a level and a tape measure.
I have a certain hill that I need to figure the grade of.
Can someone here help?
God Bless!

The percent grade is the rise divided by the run times 100.
Place a level with one end on the ground and make it level. Now measure how far the other end of the level is off the ground. Divide that number by the length of the level and multiply by 100 to get the percent grade.

That sounds correct. Basically a hill that is at a 45 degree angle would be a 100% grade. At 45 degrees every 100 feet you travel across a level plane you would rise 100 feet. So using Matt's formula that is 100 divided by 100 which is 1 multiplied times 100 which is 100% of grade.

If you know the degree angle of the grade (many clinometers show degrees, not %), take the tangent of the angle for % slope.

If you took a traffic school you should have gotten a little template that has an angle figure on it. It swings from a pencil along your clipboard. You look along the edge of the clipboard and then hold the template against the clipboard. You can see the angle displayed when done right. Boy, it has been a long time since I neded to do that !

I had one when I was in college, but that was back in the 70s.
