I am going to disagree with some of the above psts. If you have parcels sent via Mexican mail there is at least a 50% chance you will not see them. Do as others said and either have your bills paid by automatic withdrawel or online. Foregt about having letters from Aunt Maude or a magazine forwarded to Mexico. No matter what method you use it will be slow and very expensive. Avoid the nightmare. Use email for old Maude.

Interesting topic. After all these years here in Mexico and maintaining a mailbox for things from the U.S. we have gone paperless. Everything including mortgage payments come via internet. Our postbox at MailBoxes, Etc. sits empty now receiving junk mail from Good Sam and now and then a news article a family member sends. Looks like the end of this year we will terminate it.

If there is anything of importance it can be FedEx'd to our house. We get it in two days even on the ranch.

I would have to say that I still feel confident to send a 50 dollar bill as a birthday present via U.S. Mail. We can still walk into a mail service center in Mexico and mail things via U.S. mail for a small fee. It will go the border next day and then via U.S.P.S.

Looks like mail, at least for us is coming to an end. We now receive our Mexican cable bill, CFE bill, Telmex bill via internet and pay it online via Mexican banks.

The world is getting smaller.

If you don't have a trusted friend to open and scan important mail, check the mail forwarding services. I don't remember which but some (Good Sam?) will scan and email things. As others have said, set up all your bill paying on automatic--that eliminates most the important stuff. Tell lawyers, accountants, etc to email. Don't mess with trying to get mail in MX unless you are living in one place. If you are moving around, you will be in trouble.

You must consider the costs. DHL, UPS and FedEx all ship to Mexico, but...
We had small UPS and FedEx packages sent down last winter. Each one was well over 100 dollars!
This winter, I will have our packaged and sent to relatives who are coming down.

We use Earth Class Mail while being on the road for the past 1.5 years.

Their service lets you see the mail recieved and then options to shred or recycle any junk mail. You can have the mail opened and scanned and read online. (Typically all you want to see on the bill is the amount due). They will forward to any address you set up.

We scanned while in Mexico and had it shipped to a US address when we returned. System is great.

Hey Rob-- That's what we've been doing for years, and we're away for 5-6 months at a time. The worst thing that happened was my Driver's License was canceled because I neglected to take a required medical exam. OOPS

So long as Revenue Canada doesn't send an "audit" notice!!!!

This year a neighbour will have a letter authorising him to pick up registered mail and parcels.

Everything else is done on line.

Last year, while teaching at Monterrey Tec/Aguascaliente, my wife and I applied for absentee ballots from our home county, which is Cameron...right on the border. They mailed our ballots from Brownsville and they arrived in Mexico and were marked "received in Mexico" on the 12th of October. They arrived in Aguascalientes on November 2, which was too late for us to vote. Only 21 days to get to us from Mexico City...but then it's about 500 miles.

Didn't get to vote, which was the first time in 45 years of marriage that my wife didn't get to cancel my vote for President. Don't blame me.
